Whats a good but cheap camcorder that takes good pictures but doesn't break easily?

I have had two Nikon coolpixes in the last year and they have both broken down on me really quickly. I am in a video class so I decided to get a camcorder for videoing but I also need to take good pictures with it. I was hoping there wold be a camcorder that looks nice, is durable,is cheap and takes good pictures and videos. I know its a lot to ask for but if anyone has any suggestions that would be great!

I'd like HD quality (at least 720 pixels), but as long as the video quality is good.
My main focus is the audio quality. There will be A LOT of screaming.

Never been to a concert before but I wanna be prepared.

How come Windows Movie Maker makes the quality of my video clips horrible?

I filmed a video with an unregistered hypercam that films the computer screen without a camcorder and the quality looked great until I imported it to Windows Movie Maker. As soon as I dragged the clips of video to the storyboard or timeline the quality became unwatchable. Why is this happening and how do I fix it so the quality remains good.

it just looks like that on the preview screen for windows movie maker.

finish the video and hit save to my computer and watch it when it is saved.

you will see the difference.

This happens to almost all the programs, including sony vegas.

"affordable" means different things to different people.

The "best" and no stated budget?

High end? Red One. Maybe Silicon Imaging.

Pro grade? Sony XDCAM series, HDCAM series; Canon XLH or XH series; Panasonic AG-HVX series; JVC GY-HM100.

Prosumer? Sony HDR-FX1000... or jump to the higher end of the HVR series.

Consumer? Canon HV40.

If the above are to much, then consumer cams in the standard definition Canon ZR960 or FS100 are decent.

As the cameras get less expensive, the lenses and imaging chips get smaller and their low-light behavior diminishes. Manual controls get buried in a menu and audio control is lost.

Pocket cams less than about $250 can work well IF you stay within their limitations... Always under good light, always with audio that is not loud and not soft, always on some sort of steadying device (tripod, chair, table, whatever) and never handheld. Never use digital zoom. Stray from these recommendations - or try to make a camcorder work outside its specifications - and any cam will not provide acceptable results.
