Q. I have a current generation macbook, not macbook pro. I have no firewire but i want to get high quality video onto my mac. I'm not talking a Flip video camera, I'm talking a real camcorder that I can fit a fisheye lens onto. I can't spend thousands of dollars, so being told about a professional video camera won't help me

Answer
You can buy a real camcorder under $500 in the market. To transfer high quality video onto your
Mac, there is no alternative to firewire.

You can buy a firewire PCMCIA adapter for your Macbook to use it with firewire camcorder. Detail instruction goes here http://www.firewirecamera.org/2011/01/firewire-pcmcia-adapter.html

Price Drop in VIXIA Camcorders Approaching New Release?

AKolb

I'm looking to buy a camcorder in the VIXIA line, and noticed that the new versions tend to be released in January of each year (correct me if I am wrong).

Now I plan on buying one from amazon.com, which already has drastic price cuts on them, but I was wondering if they will go down any more as they try to clear out stock for the new models in 2011.

Can anybody tell me if prices at amazon.com of this series might drop any further, or if I could just go ahead and get one now? I don't have a problem with the price, but if they got lower I wouldn't mind waiting.

Thanks!

Answer
It's hard to know what amazon will do with older models when new releases come in. But you can place a item on your Wish List and you will get a red/yellow warning notice if that item has increased or decreased in price since you placed in on your list. But there is no way of knowing the future of that item.

But it can be extremely frustrating when trying to chose a camcorder knowing that a newer model is coming out. But sometimes the newer releases (of the same model) are not always well sought after. A couple of examples: Canon VIXIA HV40 is the latest model camcorder of the HV series (HV20, HV30, and now HV40). But the only deference between the HV30 and HV40 is that the HV40 can record at 24fps. Many users and shoppers feel that the price deference between the two isn't worth the 24fps so they save money buying the HV30. Another example is the Canon G11 (digital camera) which is the latest step up from the G10. But the G10 is a better camera and even costs more than the G11. My understanding is that there was some kind of change in the manufacturing process (parts, labor, etc..) that prompted a change, thus a downgrade. Some say the G10 was just too expensive for the targeted market (users). You will need just to weigh what is most important to you between current models and future models.

what is the best camcorder to use at a rock concert but isnt too expensive?

Dalia

i want a camcorder that doesnt sound shitty when im recording something at a concert. one that in when you watch the video, you actually can hear the music not just the bass. it really doesnt matter what kind of camcorder it is as long it has good audio and isnt too expensive.

Answer
For loud audio, manual audio gain control is needed. For low-end camcorders, most do not have any audio control or if they have an audio control, it is a very basic "attenuator" or "normal" option in the menu. As the camcorder increases in price, the manual audio control gets better - from a 10-12 step control in the menu to a thumbwheel on the outside of the camcorder.

The exception to this is the Sampson/Zoom Q3 and Q3HD that started as portable digital audio recording devices that had a small camera added later. With the small lens and imaging chip, the low light video won't be so good (and zoom is very limited) but the audio can be great.
