I have a MacBook and a PC but want to use the Mac for video. I need something reliable and simple!

What is your budget?
Any camcorder can connect to any computer - but some need a cable, others need software to convert video.
Any MiniDV tape camcorder connects to almost any Mac made in the last ten years or so using a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable. (The only exception is the MacBook Air - it has no firewire port). DV format video requires no change. HDV requires the Apple Intermediate Codec to be installed (this is a custom install using the Mac's system discs - it is a QuickTime component).
Any hard drive or flash memory connects using USB, but you need to convert the video using StreamClip.
High def hard drive or flash memory consumer camcorders compress into AVCHD. Only the most current iMovieHD or FinalCut can deal with AVCHD encoded video - and the Mac needs to have an Intel CPU.
DVD based camcorders are not worth wasting money on - and barely make decent doorstops.

I have a Sony 40gig hd video camera but it doesn't work with Mac. I would like to buy something under 5 grand. Something that works easily with the mac book pro. I am not a pro buy any means but do enjoy mud and water filming any help would be great thanks.

I am guessing you want to get a whole new camera then to work with your macbook pro. The best place to find mac compatible video cameras is going to be on apple.com there are quite a few different choices including a Cannon HG10 High Definition Camcorder which is similar to the sony 40 gig, because it records in hd and has a 40 gig hard drive that it records to. The damage will only be 1,000 dollars, but if you need to buy any video software that is where it gets really expensive. If you are going for a full blown professional camera then I would suggest the Canon GL2 Mini DV Camcorder. It will be enough equipment to record professional and quality video, but will run you 2,800 dollars before tax. Another option for you is to use a av input converter for mac.
