Digital camcorders for mac?

alright well i got a sony digital DVD mini camcorder for christmas yesterday, and it does not work for mac... it says it on the box (thanks santa) now i returned it and got a panasonic mini DVD digital camcorder, on the box it says for mac and PC, but didnt actually say only the the cords work for mac. SO TO GET TO MY POINT CAN SOME ONE GIVE SOME SUGGESTIONS TO A GOOD (DOESNT HAVE TO BE MINI DVD) DIGITAL CAMCORDER THAT WILL WORK WITH A MAC OSX 10.4.11 AND IMOVIE 06'... PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

Um... You did not tell us which Mac... and you did not tell us your camcorder budget.

Almost ALL Macs made in the last 10 years have a firewire port. If your Mac has a firewire port, then any MiniDV tape based camcorder will work great. The new MacBooks and MacBook Air do not have a firewire port and no way to add one. All other Macs made in the last ten years have a firewire port.
Entry level: Canon ZR900, ZR930 (consumer grade)
Low: Canon HV30, Sony HDR-HC9 (consumer grade)
Med: Canon XHA1, Sony HDR-FX1000 (prosumer grade)
High: Canon XL series, Sony HVR series (professional grade)
The firewire cable is not included in the box. They are cheap.

ALL Macs made in the last 10 years have a USB port. This means Flash memory and hard disc drive camcorders can connect. The video from these camcorders may need to be converted using StreamClip

If you have a JVC Camcorder,you must be familiar with the MOD and TOD files.Let me give you some details about mod and tod.

In order to meet peopleâs different kinds of requirements in video recording, camcorder manufacturers have developed numerous types of camcorders. However, the recorded formats produced by these camcorders are various and special, and are not widely accepted by Mac or most portable devices we often use in daily life; therefore, these formats usually bring some troubles to camcorder users, MOD and TOD are the two formats among them.
Both MOD and TOD are the informal tapeless video formats produced by certain digital camcorders. And both of them have never been given to any meaning explanations or official names by their creators JVC or Panasonic.
You can use mac to edit ,but first ,you have to convert these mod or tod to MP4, AVI, MOV, etc. on Mac OS X..I find this software is convenient to use.

Camcorders Compatible with a Mac?

My family just got a new MacBook, and we recently found out (to much dissapointment) that it is not compatible with it. Do you have any ideas on good camcorders that work with a Mac (and iMovie)? We don't need anything professional, but we don't want something childish.

Any camcorder with a Firewire (iLink/DV/IEEE1394) port will work just fine (MiniDV tape, Digital8 tape, hard drive, etc.). MacBooks have a connection for this. It's the standard connection for video transfer. You can use iMovie to do basic editing as well. DVD gets a bit more tricky.

Out of curiosity, what camcorder are you using? I'm curious to know why it's not compatible. If you're using a camera that shoots in an analog format (for example VHS-C, Hi8, 8mm), you can purchase a converter such as the ADS Pyro A/V Link, which will get your video into DV, which upload to your Mac via Firewire and edit with iMovie or any other editing software.

EDIT: Since when is MPEG-2 not compatible with Mac? MPEG-2 is ESSENTIAL for making a DVD, and lack of support for MPEG-2 would mean that nobody has EVER made a DVD with a Mac. I find this hard to believe, especially when I've made dozens of DVDs on Macs.

The question is not whether your COMPUTER will work with MPEG-2. Rather, find out if your SOFTWARE will work with it. Please get the facts straight.

The one thing that is correct there is that SOME software programs might not recognize some of the new hard drive camcorders because the format is not supported by that particular program. Your chances are better if you go with DV, whether from MiniDV or Digital 8. Just about all editing software supports DV via Firewire.

Cheap, awesome camcorder compatible with a PC and/or Mac?

In a couple months I will be a freshman in college and I want to record a lot of campus activities, my program's events, things I do with friends, me flying in the planes (I'm majoring in aviation), etc. I want to buy a camcorder before then that is the cheapest for awesome quality. I'm looking for things such as: HD recording (1080p if possible), a good mic, stabilization, etc. My price range is probably $500 or less as I only have a minimum wage job this summer. Thanks for any advice! Links too please! I haven't decided if I'll get a Macbook Pro or a beastly PC yet, and I'm also not sure on what editting software (for a noob at this) can use. Any help please?

Getting a HD camcorder is taking a step backward in Video Quality. HD camcorders Interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly, the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. Consumer level HD camcorders have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer level HD camcorders all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video.

How can I save DVD movies from a Sony camcorder in my Mac Book Pro?

I would suggest that you get an external drawer loading DVD drive (I like the ones from LaCie). Download and install HandBrake - and rip the video from the miniDVDs to a format iMovieHD and FinalCut likes... like .mov or .mp4. Then drag the converted file to the clips pain or timeline of the video editor.

NEVER put a small (8cm) or odd sized optical disc in a slot loading optical drive - you will scratch the disc and break the drive. Connecting using a USB cable will not work. That is generally only for webstreaming or transferring stills from a memory card. Neither iMovie nor FinalCut will recognize that there is video trying to come in from the USB port. DVD consumer camcorders do not have a firewire or DV port.

I have a Panasonic SDR H60 camcorder and Mac OS X 10.4.11 computer. I use iMovie '08. I have been able to upload video from the camera directly to iMovie before, but now I can't. My dad used the camera on his PC with the software provided with the camera, and I'm wondering it that may have messed up the ability of the camera to work with the Mac. How can I get the camera to be recognized by iMovie again?
