What has he better video quality: hard drive or flash memory camcorders?

For the absolute best quality at the moment, Mini-DV is the best standard definition format, sort of higher end pro formats, and HDV is the best high definition format.

Non-tape based camcorders are catching up, however. There's no absolute difference between flash or HDD (hard disc drive)... most non-tape standard def camcorders record in MPEG-2 (a small number use various sorts of MPEG-4), while most non-tape high-def camcorders record in MPEG-4/AVC (Advanced Video Coding), based on the emerging AVCHD standard.

Between individual camcorders, you can have some idea of the quality based on the top data rate. All HDV and DV camcorders record at 25Mb/s. AVCHD camcorders record at up to 17Mb/s so far, though some don't got that high (and the standard does allow for higher rates).

The other issue is that, compression-wise, DV is easier to do and more mature than MPEG-2, while MPEG-2 is easier to do and more mature than AVCHD.

The technical advantage of any tapeless format is that the data rates are variable. So while you might have a maximum rate of 15 or 17Mb/s, there are probably some options that trade off capacity for quality. You don't care if you always plan to shoot at full quality, but if you're shooting web video or something, there's not much point in shooting full high-def.

Tapeless high-def camcorders also support some variable formats, including a full 1920x1080 mode and options for 24p and 30p (progressive) rather than 60i (interlaced). Some tape-based camcorders also support 24p and/or 30p, but max out at 1440x1080 pixels to tape. As AVCHD quality improves, the tapeless models may surpass the quality of tape based models. Some of the much higher-end pro camcorders have also gone tapeless, for similar concerns (XCCAM using Blu-Ray discs, P2 and SxS memory cards, etc).

It's time to upgrade my camcorder. Need to know pros and cons of the different media formats.?

Want to upgrade from my old analog camcorder to a digital. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the 3 recording formats: DV Tape vs. Mini DVD vs. Built-in Hard Drive? I plan on doing video editing so ease of upload is a strong consideration. Is the video quality the same (excluding HD)? Also expense is a concern; the cost effectivness of buying tape vs. mini DVD or going Hard Drive. My main subject matter will be indoor sports events under not the best light conditions. Is one format better for recording such events than another. Is there buying criteria for the camcorder such as image stabilization and low light recording that I need to pay attention to. Any other buying tips would be greatly appreciated.

Everything I've read says that mini-dv is better quality than mini dvd or hard drive. The other two formats are more convenient. If you don't want to have to process at all, mini dvd is the best. Hard drive writes to an editable digital file. With min dvd you would have to convert to an .avi or .mpg file to edit. With the hard drive you would have to write a dvd (to have one). Hard drive will be the cheapest as far as media goes of course because you never need to replace it. Both mini dvds and mini dv cassetes are both relatively cheap. You can record over mini dv cassetes without losing quality. Most people buy write once mini dvds. As far as filming in low light, you'd have to research the price range you are considering and read the reviews. Spend $6 and buy a one month subsription to consumer reports online, they review the top models without bias.

What notebook would you recommend for running intensive applications?

I primarily need a notebook...

... for intensive applications (Adobe Creative Suite 2 Premium, Dreamweaver, FrontPage, etc.)
... to store music, photos and videos (also, video editing)

The notebook should have

... Lots of hard drive space for storing personal, business and multimedia files

... plenty of memory (1 GB +) to run multiple intensive applications
... If possible, dedicated video memory - for video editing

Apple MacBook Pro by far! The MacBook Pro has been updated with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, along with more RAM and hard drive storage. I have the top-of-the-line 17-inch model, a thing of beauty clad in sleek aluminum.

Still only one-inch thin, the MacBook Pro also remains one of the lightest notebooks and it does come with a 15.4-inch widescreen display. This 5.6-pound notebook is excellent for home or office use but is portable and compact enough to take on the road.

Using the MacBook Pro is a pleasure, and it didnât take me too long to fall in love with the 17 inch screen, whose optional glossy treatment is perfect for watching movies. The notebook comes with an infrared, six-button remote, so you can enjoy movies from across the room.

I like the MagSafe Power Adapter, which disconnects from the notebook if you trip over the cord. For this model, Apple added the MagSafe Airline Adapter, which uses the same concept but connects to an in-seat power port (a $59 option, not included). The MacBook Proâs illuminated keyboard and motion-sensor technology for protecting the hard drive help make this a solid pick for business travelers.

The big improvement is the upgrade from Intelâs 2.16-GHz Core Duo processor to a 2.33-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Like the previous CPU, the Core 2 Duo has two processing cores, but now each chip has 4MB of shared L2 cache. That cache allows the Core 2 Duo to store more data nearby so that it makes fewer passes to the main memory.

Speaking of memory, Appleâs computers have long been RAM weaklings, with standard configurations that paled next to their Windows counterparts, but Apple corrected that nicely. The 2.33-GHz 15-inch MacBook Pro comes with 2GB of 667-MHz DDR2 SDRAM standard, twice that of the previous version. I maxed out the system with 3GB of RAM, for an extra $575. Thatâs overkill for all but the most demanding power users like myself - I run my home network from it.

Productivity performance was decent. I suspect this may be due to the fact that Windows uses only a small partition of the MacBook Proâs hard drive (although you can set it to use more) and that Boot Camp itself has some performance overhead. BEWARE that using this now opens the MAC to the same malware attacks as the PC'ers are experiencing.

I ran MobileMark to test the battery life, the MacBook Proâs battery lasted 2 hours and 53 minutes with Wi-Fi off, compared with the average runtime of 3:41 for mainstream notebooks. I also ran a DVD rundown test and got 2 hours and 58 minutes with Wi-Fi on (compared with 3 hours and 5 minutes on the13.3-inch MacBook). Thatâs a decent runtime considering the larger size of this display, but the bottom line is that you should go with the slower (and cheaper) 2.16-GHz processor if you want more endurance.

Wireless antenna strength is supposed to no longer be a problem with Appleâs high-end notebooks, but I noticed a weaker signal with this MacBook Pro than with one of my other Mac's desktop in the same location. Compared with my Toshiba notebook, the MacBook Pro wasnât too far off with scores of 12.6 Mbps at 15 feet and 9.6 at 50 feet.

I'm looking to purchase a good HD Hard Disk Drive camcorder. I'm a Sony fan, but there are several options out there. Should I instead look into purchasing a Canon (Flash Memory) camcorder? What's better, Hard Disk Drive --or-- Flash Memory?


Answer
Short answer: Flash Memory.

Long answer:
With the known limitations consumer hard disc drive camcorders have with vibration/shock and altitude, challenges archiving the video and huge expense recovering data from crashed hard drives, I no longer recommend hard disc drive camcorders.

Flash memory camcorders use the same highly compressed file types so if you must, then flash memory is better between the two. Check the Sony HDR-CX500 series or Canon HF or HF S series camcorders.

Please keep in mind that video compression = discarded video data = reduced video quality. Also, if you are expecting to edit that video, you will need an editor that can deal with AVCHD/MTS files. There is nothing useful in the box with the camcorder and if you are running Windows/Vista, MovieMaker cannot deal with MTS files (Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere float to the top. Macs have iMovie '08 or newer that can deal with AVCHD/MTS files (or FinalCut).

If you want best available video quality, then you need least compression applied to the video data stream. That continues to be DV and HDV format - and for consumer camcorders, that means miniDV tape. Canon HV40. It also happens to be the least expensive camcorder available with a mic jack and manual audio control. Since we are here... Check what the bigger dogs use...

I'm still a big fan of MiniDV cameras and format. They are very compatible with just about every software and are very simple to use and upload the video. You plug in the Firewire cable and capture from within your editing software. Edit . Done. There is newer technology out there but that doesn't make it better. MiniDV is tried and tested. Lots of people use it and is still used in the top cameras you can buy that costs thousands of dollars. You need to set a budget and see what you really need.

What do you think of the Canon VIXIA HF S11 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder?

So, after a little research, I am probably going to purchase a Flash Memory camcorder instead of a Hard Disk Drive camcorder. If I purchase this Canon camcorder, I'm definitely going to purchase a 32 GB SDHC memory card. For those with "camcorder experience", what do you think? Also, what video software would be a good choice along with this camcorder?

If our only choices are between hard disc drive and flash memory for video storage, then the Canon HF S series is the better choice. The file formats of the video are the same (very highly compressed AVCHD files in MTS format), so the video quality will be similar. The difference is that HDD camcorders have known issues (vibration, high altitude) that flash memory camcorders do not share (nor do miniDV tape). As well, with fewer moving parts, the same battery in a flash memory camcorder or a HDD camcorder will last longer in the flash memory camcorder.

Any AVCHD editor will work - Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere, iMovie '08 or newer or FinalCut float to the top. Be sure your computer exceeds the CPU, RAM and available hard disc drive space requirements. AVCHD is a pig.

Personally, I would prefer the Canon HV40, but there are different requirements for the more "pro-like" miniDV tape and that media was not on your short list.

I'm looking for a good camcorder with good picture and sound quality. I know very little about the different types of video cameras (hard drive, etc.) I plan on using it to transfer and edit videos on my computer. I won't spend more than $350. A specific model would help me most, but a simple explanation about which type of camera would be best for me would be appreciated.

The Optura 600 from canon

The Optura 600 represents the flagship of Canon's 1 chip MiniDV camcorders, the king of the Optura line. Retailing at around $1100 (up approximately $400 from the Optura 60), your money might be well-spent. The 600's huge 1/2.8" CCD promises excellent video performance, a category the Opturas have traditionally faired well in. Matchbook bodies seem to be all the rage, combining portability and deed. Many matchbooks, however, present handling issues, and may annoy those expecting a professional feel to match the large price tag. We hope the Optura 600 brought its "A-game," because we dropped it in the middle of the ring to face off against the top MiniDV consumer cams of the year.

Video Performance
The Optura 600 sports an enormous 1/2.8â CCD with 3.5 effective MP. The camcorder also uses Canonâs RGB Primary Color Filter for a boost in video performance. The difference these specs makes becomes obvious when you compare it to the Optura 60. The picture appears sharper and the colors are richer. The grayscale is also much more sharply defined.

Because this is Canonâs top of the line consumer camcorder, we held it up against the top models from other manufacturers. Compared to the GR-X5, one of our top video performers this year, the colors are a shade darker, and overall you might say that the Optura 600âs spectrum is more even. The black/white contrast looks better in the JVC GR-X5, however. The colors from the Sony DCR-PC1000
