I want to know what current camcorders that are affordable work well with iMovie 2011. A camcorder where you don't have to download any streaming or video convertor programs.

Good zoom works very well for a day approaches and bright places Soledad excellent, but for low light if you need some accessories to give greater illumination to the area of ''shooting. Very light which allows for smooth loading and the quality of video and pass video to the computer is simple and makes working with the format and work with iMovie iFrame makes it very simple.

So what is the best things I need to make good movies names of everything I need please?

Answer
Almost every DV camcorder on the market, regardless of its specific flavor, offers many of the same basic features and capabilities. In general, you can expect to find a 10x to 30x optical zoom, analog video out, and a fold out LCD panel to make it easy to compose your shots and watch them back.

From brand to brand, the video image quality of DV tape camcorders is about the same â almost all camcorders provide between 400 to 500 lines of resolution, sharp, detailed images, and realistic looking color. Many of the latest generation camcorders also offer the option of recording in high definition. However, their definition of HD differs and what it actually looks like might not be as good as you may expect in the entry level models.

There are audio differences however. Some smaller DV camcorders mount the microphone on top of the camcorder point up. Perfect for capturing your voice and breath â not so good for capturing the sounds of what the camcorder is aimed at.

How can I adjust my new LG 20" monitor to make the screen and camcorder movies not look so "scrunched"?

bethenna

I changed to view size 125% --and tried 150% but that makes everything too large. People on the monitor screen look wider than they actually are. That is no joke. HA. I know there had to be some method of fixing that.

Answer
Right click on your desktop and select "Properties" on the bottom of the list that pops up. Select the "Settings" tab at the top of the box. Adjust the Screen Resolution slider and follow the prompts until your screen looks correct. You simply do not have the correct resolution for that size monitor.

Why is that most of the attention concerning HDV camcorders goes to Panasonic and Sony and not JVC?

best 720p camcorder reviews image

Mickey

Eventhough this HDV camera has 1/3"ccds, has interchangeable lens and can record in 720p for less price?

Answer
Are you talking about the HD110/ HD200/ HD250? Well then, I totally agree with you. They are excellent cameras, and in my opinion, the best HDV cameras on the market. It's actually one of the only HDV cameras that offers a 24p mode as well (Z1U, XH-A1, G1, and XL-H1 don't)

Sony, Canon and Panasonic have always received more attention. period. Anything else is considered a bad camera, and even JVC has a reputation of not being the best company... in some cases that generalization is true, but in this case, it's a horribly wrong misconception. The JVC HD series cameras are excellent! In one review, the HD110U's picture clarity was compared directly to that of the XL-H1. the HD110U is also very popular on low bugdet films and documentaries, as well as various news stations.

On the flips side, there has always been the argument that the JVC HD series cameras can't do the higher res 1080i. That is, of course true, for that matter, what other HDV camera can do 720p? The thing with HDV cameras is that they cannot switch between recording modes like some solid state cameras can do (it can't be 1080i/720p switchable), but if I were to choose, I think I would go with 720p. Cuz as a filmmaker, 720p is much better for its aesthetics as Progressive rather than Interlaced, as well as for space reasons. It's a common misconception that 720p is not "real HD" or that it is "not enough". Well, quite a few indie films as well as documentaries are shot in 720p just fine...720p also saves you a ton of memory when it comes to editing....Actually, the HD series cameras CAN shoot 1080i with the additional purchase of a JVC Hard Drive recording unit.

Like you have said, its Interchangeable lens mount, and professional shoulder-mounted ergonomics give the JVC HD cameras an edge over the HDV competition... Solid State cameras (like Sony's XDCAM or Panasonics DVCPro line) still have the upper hand however.

So, um yeah... the JVC HD series totally powns! So don't anyone else tell you any different!

Is there a digitial camera that shoots good movies as well?

Billy V

I'd like to get my wife a digital camera that she could shoot movies on as well. Not a replacement for our camcorder, but something that will shoot above average movies when we don't have camcorder with us, or it's just easier to bring around like at amusement parks or petting zoos.

Answer
Yes, there is. It's called the Canon TX1.

It's a 7mp camera that also shoots 720P high definition video. It als has image stabilization and a 10x zoom lens.

Here's a review of the camera here:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/CanonTX1/

Essentially, you get high quality stills and better than average camcorder functions at 1280 x 720 resolution, 30 fps.

Want to upgrade from my old analog camcorder to a digital. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the 3 recording formats: DV Tape vs. Mini DVD vs. Built-in Hard Drive? I plan on doing video editing so ease of upload is a strong consideration. Is the video quality the same (excluding HD)? Also expense is a concern; the cost effectivness of buying tape vs. mini DVD or going Hard Drive. My main subject matter will be indoor sports events under not the best light conditions. Is one format better for recording such events than another. Is there buying criteria for the camcorder such as image stabilization and low light recording that I need to pay attention to. Any other buying tips would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Everything I've read says that mini-dv is better quality than mini dvd or hard drive. The other two formats are more convenient. If you don't want to have to process at all, mini dvd is the best. Hard drive writes to an editable digital file. With min dvd you would have to convert to an .avi or .mpg file to edit. With the hard drive you would have to write a dvd (to have one). Hard drive will be the cheapest as far as media goes of course because you never need to replace it. Both mini dvds and mini dv cassetes are both relatively cheap. You can record over mini dv cassetes without losing quality. Most people buy write once mini dvds. As far as filming in low light, you'd have to research the price range you are considering and read the reviews. Spend $6 and buy a one month subsription to consumer reports online, they review the top models without bias.

What is the best dv camcorder on the market that is about 300$?

Well i have been looking for a camera that i would be able to down load my videos strait on to windows movie maker on my computer. And what i am really looking for in a camcorder is good qualty and to be able to download all of my videos to the computer very easily. So i just want to know what are some of the best dv camcorders out there that are about 300$.

Answer
Sony Handycam DCR-HC30

The DCR-HC30 makes a decent and very compact choice for a budget camcorder, but if you can afford to spend another $100, the DCR-HC40 will give you better video quality.
Specs: Camcorder, 6.8 megapixels, 10 x, Mini DV

The good: Extremely compact and lightweight; good ergonomics; decent video quality; accessory shoe.

The bad: Inconvenient touch-screen controls; bottom-loading tape; no wind filter for microphone; short battery life from included cell.

The bottom line: The DCR-HC30 makes a decent and very compact choice for a budget camcorder, but if you can afford to spend another $100, the DCR-HC40 will give you better video quality.

Canon ZR850

Canon's new MiniDV top model, the ZR850, continues the ZR tradition of offering affordable, easy-to-use wide-screen movie-making, though low-light performance is still subpar.
Specs: Camcorder, 1.07 megapixels, 35 x, Mini DV

The good: New, easier-to-use menu system with joystick control; impressive color in good lighting; wide-screen LCD; built-in lens cover; low price.

The bad: No accessory shoe or microphone input; bottom-loading tape compartment; doesn't support analog-to-digital conversions; not enough stabilization at full zoom; poor low-light performance.

The bottom line: Canon's new MiniDV top model, the ZR850, continues the ZR tradition of offering affordable, easy-to-use wide-screen movie-making, though low-light performance is still subpar.

Question about preordering phones from best buy....?

top 5 camcorders cnet image

What, if any, are the disadvantages? Does best buy do like most 3rd party sellers and charge you a termination fee on top of what the carrier does if you cancel early? Also, can you preorder a phone if you are not signed up with the provider? I want to get the EVO 4g but I dont have Sprint yet. Can I preorder it and then sign up when the phone comes in?

Answer
Order it directly from Sprint to save the most money.

America's First 4G Phone, HTC EVO(TM) 4G, Debuts on June 4 Packed with Industry-Leading Features Including Access to Mobile Video Chat, Simultaneous Voice and Data and HD Video CaptureFont size: A | A | A6:15 PM ET 5/12/10 | BusinessWire
If you were creating your dream wireless device what would it look like? Two cameras and video chat so you can say goodnight to your children when you are away on a business trip? Simultaneous voice and data, so you can call in your take-out order while you look at their menu on the Internet? The ability to plug your phone into your HDTV, so you can let your children finish the movie they started watching in the car's backseat when you get home? And a huge screen for watching the videos you download in seconds -- not minutes -- with the fastest wireless data speeds available in America today? Stop daydreaming and get ready for Sprint (NYSE: S) to make your dreams come true on June 4 when the highly anticipated HTC EVO 4G debuts.

The critics agree that HTC EVO 4G is this summer's must-have wireless experience as it continues to win their accolades and endorsements. CNET, LAPTOP and eWeek gave HTC EVO 4G awards for Best of Show when it was announced at CTIA this spring. Engadget said, "It's easily the best specced phone we've ever witnessed." The Financial Times cooed, "The first 4G phone in the U.S., the HTC EVO ... ticks just about all the boxes for my ideal phone."

"HTC EVO 4G is a fantastic 3G device, but when you use it in our growing 4G coverage area, it becomes a multimedia powerhouse," said Dan Hesse, Sprint CEO. "The EVO 4G experience is much like going from TV to HDTV. But EVO has more than just an impressive list of features -- it is also fun to use with remarkable gaming, video and web-browsing capabilities."

With the launch of HTC EVO 4G, Sprint customers will be able to enjoy capabilities they have never experienced before with a new video chat service from Qik. The two-way voice and video capability will be available as an upgrade to the preloaded Qik app on HTC EVO 4G to enable conversational, interactive, real-time sharing between mobile devices or from mobile-to-desktop.

Amazing Features, Beautiful Design

HTC EVO 4G features the latest version of the increasingly popular Android platform, Android 2.1, offering more than 35,000 apps, as well as a mind-blowing list of features, including:

-- Simultaneous voice and data capability in 4G and Wi-Fi coverage areas, enabling Web surfing and more while the conversation continues.

-- Offering a new way to search with pictures instead of words, Google Goggles(TM) works with everything from books, DVDs and barcodes to landmarks, logos, artwork and wine labels.

-- Superfast 1GHz Qualcomm(R) Snapdragon(TM) processor, ensuring a smooth and quick movement within phone menus.

-- Two cameras -- an 8.0 megapixel auto-focus camera with HD-capable video camcorder and a forward-facing 1.3 megapixel camera.

-- Built-in mobile hotspot functionality allowing up to eight Wi-Fi enabled devices to share the 3G or 4G experience on the go with a laptop, camera, music player, game unit, video player, or any other Wi-Fi enabled device.

-- Integrated HD video capture with the ability to capture and share live video via the Qik Web site, Facebook, YouTube or Twitter(TM).

-- Ability to easily watch video with the device on an HDTV via an HDMI cable (sold separately).

-- Custom Web browser optimized for the 4.3 inch display and Sprint 4G speeds to deliver a full, no-compromise Internet experience.

-- A handy kickstand built into the back, making it easy to watch videos on-the-go.

-- Adobe Flash technology ensures that rich Internet content, such as embedded video and animation, are displayed the way they are meant to be seen.

-- Pinch-to-zoom and automatic text reflowing provide easy Web page views.

HTC EVO 4G boasts the newest version of the highly acclaimed HTC Sense user experience. With HTC Sense, HTC EVO 4G users can use Friend Stream to aggregate multiple social communication channels, including Facebook and Twitter into one organized flow of updates; a "Leap" thumbnail view to easily switch between home screen "panels;" the ability to download new, interactive widgets; and a "polite" ringer, which quiets the ringing phone once lifted up.

While the performance of currently available Android applications will be enhanced by access to 4G data speeds, a Sprint 4G developer guide is available today from the Sprint ADP Web site at http://developer.sprint.com. The Sprint 4G developer guide provides details on developing for an Android 2.1 handset and how to take advantage of HTC EVO 4G's unique hardware and software capabilities and the Sprint 4G network. The Sprint Application Developer Program has been providing tools for third-party developers since Sprint first launched the Wireless Web on its phones in 2001.

I am planning to start a videography business in the future. What characteristics should I look for in camcorders that are worth investing in? Keep in mind that they will have to have capabilities of taping at night and transporting the footage to a computer. Thanks!

Answer
Most of it depends upon your budget apetite. There are decent camcorders which don't cost much and although they may not have the capability to directly transfer footage into a computer, you can always do it using a $50 device called Dazzle (can be found at DELL site) which will enable you to do it.
Some of the latest camcorders let you record directly on to DVD (not full size) and some do it on Hi-8mm or mini dv tapes. The recording medium is important if you want the quality to last for long time.
Sony has come out with a HiDef camera which does a decent job at night shots (they invented it!), but I have heard feedback that it doesn't do as well on stabilization. This means that you will have to stick it up on a tripod, which most professionals do.
For more details on the models, I recommend to visit cnet. The link is below

Where can I go to do in-depth research on camcorders?

top camcorders on the market on Marketed
top camcorders on the market image

juilletang

I'm thinking about buying one (either a DVD or DVR) and I want to find out ALOT about what they can do. I've looked for web sites and found stuff on Wikipedia & How Stuff Works. I want a site that has practically EVERYTHING on camcorders and the different types. Can you help me?

Answer
Check out www.camcorderinfo.com if you really want to learn about camcorders. They go farther on indepth testing than most consumers have the stomach to read, and even though they can't test every single camcorder on the market, they get to most of them, let alone the important ones. You'll find info about a camcorder low light capabilities, controls, and other stuff that will allow you to make clear comparisons between models better than you will any where else. If your looking at prosumer or professional level, they've done limited reviews on some, but ultimately you'll have to just find what reviews you can on the web or sites like dv.com, videographer.com or look up cinematography.

If you just want to shoot and watch, then DVD's OK. However, I haven't read or experienced anyone that I know whose been able to get miniDVD or DVD into an editor without a lot of pain, if they got it at all! DVD camcorders are not made for the shoot and edit videographers, because when the DVD is finalized, it's formatted in the same filetype as commercial DVDs to ensure it's playability in set-top DVD players. A photographer I know bought a DVDcam which came with software for editing. As far as editing goes, it was more limited than movie maker, but what was absolutely intolerable was that it wouldn't keep the audio in sync with the video. Not good! Another way is buying a third party software to rip the video off the DVD, but it's a crapshoot getting it to display properly.

If you're going to get into editing, tests have proven that miniDV cassettes handled properly have a shelf life nearly equal to DVD! The only drawback is that it's more time consuming to transfer the video off tape than it is off of a HDD camcorder, or a DVD (assuming you can.) I'm only guessing that by "DVR", you mean HDD, because DVR actually refers to a tape or hard disc recorder/player. HDD seems really cool for the transfer rate or even being able to review footage in a nonlinear fashion in the camcorder, but make sure your nonlinear editor supports it before blowing the money, and finding out you can't make your movies.

Another place you check out is Cnet.com. It's not as extensive, but a good second opinion if the review is there. If there are any others, you may be able to find them off of those sites. Good luck to you, it's neat finding someone else who actually wants to learn about camcorders.

Why are there no good quality American consumer electronics maker?

All the top of the line HDTV's, LCD's, Speakers, Stereos, Cameras, Camcorders, music Players, cell phones, etc, are all Japanese/Korean companies like Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, Toshiba, LG, Hitachi, etc.

What is the best camcorder to record a basic training graduation?

best $800 camcorder on Camcorder Mic - smart reviews on cool stuff.
best $800 camcorder image

Michael S

My mom wants to purchase a new camcorder to use at my basic training graduation for the Air Force. I am ashamed to admit, I dont know a thing about camcorders. I did some researched and talked to a few people who recently purchased a camcorder and I'm still very fuzzy. Does anyone have any suggestions? Specific brand and model? Maybe, a general rule of thumb or ruleS of thumb for purchasing a GOOD quality camcorder.

Answer
Basic training for camcorder purchase: There are two categories of camcorders STANDARD definition and and HIGH Definition. There are 4 recording formats for camcorders. 1) MiniDV tape 2) DVD 3)Hard Disk Drive or HDD and 4) Flash Drive.

Note as of February 2009, High Definition is the rule, standard broadcast TV will no longer exist, you will need to aquire a converter box just to watch regular broadcast television such as Oprah or whatever. So, eventually you will get an HD television. So, do you really want to purchase Standard Definition camcorder? Prices range $200 - $600.

MiniDV tape requires you to dub from camcorder to TV or computer via hookup to watch. 60 minute recording tapes.

DVD records only 30 minutes per side or disk. MUST finalize disk on camcorder BEFORE you can view on DVD player. No cables, but necessary to purchase new media all the time. $400 - $600 Standard...$700+ for HD.

HDD or Hard Disk Drive camcorders have 20 - 120 GB of internal memory, thats 6 hours to 40 hours of video time. But, you must download to computer to burn DVD/CD or purchase a separate DVD burner to archieve your videos off of HDD camcorder. $450 - $550 Standard...$850+ for HD.

Flash Drive camcorders are currently Canon, Sony or Samsung. These have some internal and primarily external removable memory such as Secure Disk memory card or Sony Memory Stick. These units are strickly playback or USB download to computer to burn a cd/DVD disk. $800+.

Note: Sony Blueray for High Definition is the winner of the format war for HD. All burners will be for Blue Ray recording.

ps...better have an updated computer to handle the RAM for video burning or DVR recording to at least archieve your videos.

Recommend Sony SR10 HDD. Sony has it all from lens to living room system.

Congrats on USAF boot camp completion. Fly High!

How do I connecting my camcorder to my computer?

Doug P

I purchased a Canon ZR 800 today for a trip I plain on taking in a few days. When I purchased the camera I planned on also using my computer to edit the footage I got, but when I opened the box it didn't come with the wire it needed to connect to my computer. Does anyone know were I can get one without spending $50.00? Thanks in advance.

Answer
If you have a mini dv (cassette) camcorderâ¦.
Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder. Make sure your camera is in playback mode.

best digital camcorder zoom image
Q. I am looking for up to digital zoom 20x to 40x and around like $300 dollars. I am looking for a hadycam HD 20x to 40x digital zoom camcorder.

Answer
Your budget is not enough for a half decent hard disc drive or high definition camcorder.

The closest I can get are Canon ZR900, ZR930 miniDV tape or FS10 flash memory camcorder. They have a mic jack that no others in this price range have (from Sony or Panasonic). They are standard definition only.

I stopped suggesting any hard drive camcorders when I learned of their known problems with loud audio (vibration) and high altitude problems when the head park and no video is recorded.

"Handycam" is Sony's brandname for all consumer camcorders Sony makes. The DCR-HC62 and HC62 do not have a mic jack.

How to interpret the zoom power indicators on a camcorder?

A H

I have a photography background with 35mm film and digital cameras. I am on the market to buy a camcorder and I would like to understand the "reach" of the zoom when it mentions things like "10X optical"? I can easily figure out the reach of, say, a 75-300mm lens in 35mm film cameras. How does the camcorder zoom labels compare to 35mm film camera zooms?

Answer
It is as simple as it seems.

10x zoom means that at 0% zoom or no zoom, the image is at the same size you can see with the naked eye from the same spot and vantage point as the camcorder, and at 100% zoom or maximum zoom, the same image is now ten times larger than its original size (and part of the image may now be so big it went our of frame or out of view).

If you are talking about focal distance or in your case "focal length", that is a different issue. Most built-in camcorder lenses can focus from macro to infinity. In most cases, you can find an adapter to adapt a 35mm camera lens onto the front of the built-in camcorder lens, and then, focal length and "reach" come into play because your camera lens is based on f-stops. Several professional camcorders (such as the Sony PMW-EX3) also allow the removal of the camcorder's lens and the placement of another lens including those from 35mm cameras to be installed instead for specialized filming situations.

Check camcorderinfo.com... and do everyone a favor - ditch the hard drive camcorder and get flash memory or miniDV tape instead.

What type of camcorder would be best for a mother to be?

Q. I have read about the Hard Disc drive ones, the DVD ones etc..if the hard drive one is better-how do you get the video to a DVD? Thank you!

Answer
I'm still a big fan of MiniDV cameras and format. They are very compatible with just about every software and are very simple to use and upload the video. You plug in the Firewire cable and capture from within your editing software. Edit . Done. There is newer technology out there but that doesn't make it better. MiniDV is tried and tested. Lots of people use it and is still used in the top cameras you can buy that costs thousands of dollars. You need to set a budget and see what you really need.

Is there a device to buy to view old 8mm video camera tapes? My camcorder broke that used to play them and they apparently don't make them anymore. There's lots of old home videos on them, and I would like to be able to keep them somehow- DVD, VHS, whatever... Is there a way to watch these without the camcorder? A device to buy? Thanks! I would appreciate it!

Answer
There is no "8mm tape deck". The device to by would be an 8mm camcorder... used - somewhere. If you go this route, I would also suggest getting an "analog/digital bridge" like those from Pinnacle (Dazzle) or Canopus so you can transfer the video to a computer and store on a hard drive or optical disc.

There may be a "video transfer" service in your town/city that can do that conversion for you (for a fee)...

What do you use to convert 8mm mp premium camcorder tape to your computer?

I have a TDK 8mm MP Premium camcorder tape. Unfortunately, I dont have the camcorder anymore. Is there a method/machine to easily transfer it onto the computer/VHS/dvd? I don't want to spend lots of money just to be able to see this tape again.

Answer
If it's an analog Hi8 tape, you need to buy a analog to digital capture card. Or you need to bite the bullet and send it to someone for conversion. If you only have one tape, it's cheaper to pay someone. A card will cost you $70 or more on ebay. I'll do it for $25 and the quality will be substantially better than you could do yourself because I use a $500 Datavideo Time Base Corrector to fix all of the issues that analog video usually has (frame synchronicity, jitter).
