Ever been in a long time in Japan? Japanese culture?

Reinando

So, I'm going to Japan this January. I'm curious with the Japanese cultures. Anyone ever been there for a long time? What should and shouldn't do when I'm in a japanese family? Btw, I'm going for a homestay. Thank you

Answer
Learn a lot about life there first; for many basics try

http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e622.html
http://www.thejapanfaq.com/FAQ-Manners.html

Bring a good digital camera, or even better, camcorder, since you can take a lot of photos and video that in the future you will treasure dearly.
Before you leave, you should prepare some gifts for your host family.
Generally you want to bring something that represents where you are from. Maybe bring a small gift for each member of the family, and one gift for the family as a whole. Nothing extremely expensive is necessary. They will also return the favor and if you give very expensive gifts it puts the pinch on them to give something of equal or slightly higher value.
Some small picture books or calendars, posters, ashtrays, chocolates, fragrant bath salts, t-shirts, liquor, sauces or salad dressings like Ranch, pure maple or berry syrups, colognes, jams, baseball caps, coasters, nice soap or shampoos, lotions, cosmetics, nuts, flavored coffees, keychains, postcards, etc. would be great.
I often bring some tea from a local supermarket - it is cheap, light, and there are now several varieties of green tea that Japanese have never tried, such as with mandarin orange, jasmine, earl grey, fruits, raspberry, lemon, ginseng or mint.
Somewhat less elegant but something quite practical I often bring for friends in Japan is a large bottle of aspirin, which costs several times (I am not exaggerating) what it
does in the US/Canada.
Be aware though that in Japan 4 and 9 are "unlucky" numbers, and especially older Japanese tend to be superstitious, -- avoid giving any sets of 4 or 9.
Of course, where possible, avoiding very fragile and very heavy objects is desirable.
It is very likely that your family will treat you very well if not lavishly, especially when you first arrive,
such as taking you to some expensive restaurants, so make sure to bring something more formal to wear.
Enjoy your homestay.

I want to make some documentary films and would like a nice prosumer camcorder for around $1000-$1500. I'm trying to find a good touch phone with a decent sized screen but so far I'm undecided. There are so many options but my major criteria is that it should have a good performance and should support any type of image file because I'm planning to read Japanese manga in it.

How do professional cameramen film in low light so well?

top camcorders low light on Best camcorder under $400-2013
top camcorders low light image

Teh Tarik

I've just bought a Kogan video camera (new Australian brand, not well known) that from my limited experience of camcorders is somewhere in the middle of the video camera spectrum (definitely not lousy, but nothing special either) and I"ve tried several times filming in a dark room with Night mode with very poor results. I can't actually tell the difference between normal and Night mode.

Do you have experience with video cameras that film well in low light? I made a bit of money recently and considering doing a trade-in somewhere.

Answer
Hi Steph:

Let's boil down this whole discussion into two things:
1) Your AU$399 (~USD$425) Kogan camcorder (which tells us your original budget range). That's no where near the "middle" of the $50 - $100,000 USD video camera spectrum.
2) The phrase "how do professional cameramen film... so well?"

It all boils down to spending good money for good equipment. The professional camera crews use equipment that costs thousands more than what you have now, plus --if you are not talking just InfraRed shooting in total or near-total darkness-- their cameras have multiple gain-boost settings for low light.

If you are trying to compare home camcorder footage of any kind with professional broadcast TV shows, just stop it. Their gear is way more advanced, plus (as others have mentioned) they also have post-production signal processors to help boost image parameters and quality.

The pro's also have access to "image intensifiers" they mount between their lens and camcorder (or on the front lens in cheaper cameras), like the AstroScope, which for around $6,000 USD will work for even a consumer camcorder or SLR. These can create an image using only starlight from the sky.

Your Kogan brand is not highly rated in picture quality to start with (see CNet Australia's review: http://www.cnet.com.au/kogan-full-hd-1080p-video-camcorder-camera-339293191.htm ). If you happen to have a more-expensive Kogan model, I apologize, but not much. A not-well-known brand that's in Australian K-Marts says a lot in itself. If you do trade-up, go for a name brand that's done this for awhile & has a track record for image quality as well as construction quality.

If you really have an interest in "Ghost Hunters" style IR shooting and not just poorly-lit parties, get a good used Sony Handycam that has true Sony "NightShot" features (the older consumer NightShot models could also "see" through certain garments, so Sony crippled newer Handycams' IR features).

The professional IR camera crews also use "bright" (but invisible to the eye) InfraRed spotlights mounted on the camera tops.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

My friend and I will be shooting a sort of documentary for our dissertation. We will be in different countries all over Europe and Asia, shooting in womans shelters, and interviewing officials. We may be in some low light situations. This documentary will be put on DVD and on the internet, and the documentary needs to be good quality. We are planning on buying a professional video camera. Any ideas? Thanks!

I have no knowledge of camcorders or directing, but I've recently taken a big interest in recording my own music videos/short films. I'm willing to pay good money, but I just want to make sure that I'm buying a camcorder that'll last me years. I'm looking for a camcorder that'll record in HD, I know that's a standard thing nowadays, but I want the picture to come out great. I'm not sure if it's editing that makes the quality of the recording look amazing, but that's what I'm hoping it'll look like when somethings recording. almost movie like.

Does anyone have any recommendations on which camcorder is best?
Thank you Dennis.
I have taken some of those things into consideration, mainly looking into the proper computer (Mac) to hold such storage and having capable speed, etc.

My price range is 1000-3000.
My not looking to make it big or make a career out of it It's more of a hobbie.

Answer
Hi Christopher:

Usually "professional camcorder" and "beginner-friendly" don't go together in the same sentence or camcorder model.

And without you stating a specific dollar amount or price range, we don't know if you can even afford what's known as a "prosumer" (consumer model with many "pro" features) camcorder. These are typically $1000-$3000 USD. Professional models start there and go way-past the $50,000 mark.

Music videos (and watchable "films") require good audio tracks. External mike inputs (also needed for music & vocals mixer inputs) are another key "pro-level" feature beginners forget about.

And yes, the editing (and choice of file format, codecs, and workflow) can make a big difference in the final "look" of a video. And your computer (brand & model, and the Windows or Mac O/S version) makes a big difference in the quality of HD video edits, and even whether you can edit HD at all. (Good quality HD takes a lot of computer "horsepower" and fast storage to edit properly.)

Figure out your budget, and post an "Additional Details" update to your Question, and I or another Yahooligan can make specific model recommendations in your price range.

hope this helps,

How do i connect a cannon Zr500 mini dv camcorder to my computer without having a dv port?

vong54

I Dont have anything but a usb port on my computer and i have a dell dimension 3000 desktop computer if there is a way to connect please list the things that can help me connect it

Answer
get a IE1394 (firewire) pc card off ebay for $1-2. Then get a transfer cable with a 6 pin connector for your pc on one end and a 4 pin connector on the other for your camcorder. (again $1-2 plus shipping). If you really need it soon, head over to your nearest electronics store, but its going to cost about $40 compared to $10. Putting in a firewire card is the easiest way to get your digital footage onto your computer without any quality loss (i.e. through analog inputs). You can then use Windows Movie Maker 2 to edit the footage. (Free download if you dont already have it)

What's the name of those monitors on top of the camcorders?

John

I own a HDV cam (Canon XHA1s) but since the LCD monitor is too small I am considering to buy a monitor that goes on top of this camcorder.
What's the name of those monitors (the appropriate word or terminology) and what brands are there to be known as the best?

Thanks for your help.

Answer
It is hard to find a search word for what you want. I used "7" LCD monitor" and then found many on B&H Photo's website. Brands such as Glidecam, Ikan, Delvcam, etc.

Ikan is one of the more popular ones and they offer many sizes and resolutions, etc. BTW, you can always use a portable DVD player if you're on a tight budget.

What is the best budget camcorder to live stream high school athletic events?

best zoom camcorder for sports on Canon EOS 6D Review
best zoom camcorder for sports image

Adistrohm

I need a high quality camcorder no more than $300. We will be using it to stream high school sports live, which brings me to my supplement question. Supposedly, I know someone who knows how to set up this live streaming. But how would this be set up exactly? You would obviously need an internet connection (wifi or ethernet), but I'm not sure we have access to this.... Is it possible to use satellite streaming? Or is that impossible without internet and would it be very expensive? Thanks!

Answer
If "know someone who knows how to set up this live streaming" then start with them on which camcorders to investigate.

"Satellite streaming" means there is a satellite uplink (including a big dish and transmitters and such) and someone's paid for transponder space and time. It also presumes a "satellite downlinks" and access to processing the feed. I won't assume anything, but I don't *think* this will be available to you.

At $300 you are basically at the entry level for consumer grade camcorders. While these are typically well made electronics, I cannot characterize them as being "high quality" relative to video broadcast standards. Since there are no consumer camcorders that can digitally stream the video over USB until you hit the $800 range (like a Canon HV40, or any others using miniDV tape media storage will work because they use firewire), the best you can do is stream analog video.

So, given your budget - which is likely not enough - we have:

Any camcorder with AV-out. This is pretty much any camcorder - but you need to be sure the AV-out can be used to monitor what the camera can see - again, pretty much any camcorder. This plugs into an "Analog/Digital converter". The A/D converter plugs into the computer. Then the "someone who knows how to set up this live streaming" can finish up... including the connection to the Local Area Network that connects to the internet...

Use a tripod or other steadying device. Consider using a camera that uses a wired remote. The control is mounted to the tripod handle and controls zoom and other things. Use the AC adapter and be sure the camcorder's "auto sleep" is disabled. You are using a camcorder in a manner for which it was not designed.

Some Sony and Canon camcorders have a combo AV/remote port. You can do one or the other - not both at the same time. Some camcorders use a LANC. This will work great. As far as I know, the least expensive with a separate LANC is the Canon HV40... then comes the Sony HDR-FX7 (I think). These are both more than you want to spend.

What is the best camcorder/camera that has the best zoom for video?

knowitall

I want to know what the best camera is that has the most zoom mostly for videos. I went to best buy to look for one and i found a Sony DCR-SX85 that has 70x zoom but the video quality is very low. I want one that has very high zoom and records HD video. please leave links. Thank you
im looking for one that is less than $300

Answer
HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video.http://simplevideoediting.com/learn/part1_camcorder_choices.htm

Stinkoman2

Ok, whenever I first got my camcorder like 2 years ago, I tested it out and recaorded a bunch of stupid stuff, and it takes up like half of the tape, can you tell me how to get it off without buying more tapes?

Answer
Well, these 2 _might_ work - but might take a long time.

Place it on a large magnet (back of a speaker) and leave it for a bit, moving it around occasionally in various directions.

An A/C transformer would probably work ever better (you have to move it around on it also.)

If you know anyone at a TV station or that works in a large computer room, ask them to run their tape degausser on it.
It's a large A/C transformer / magnet that's designed for just that.
It'll erase it in a second and it'll act brand new.

To make it look semi-blank.
Rewind it all of the way. Put the lens cap on the recorder (or a substitute) and record nothing at a different speed than the tape was originally recorded at.

That way if there's anything left (even that little bit at that front of the tape that you can never seem to get of), you probably won't be able to see it because takes a second or two to figure out the speed.

In the future, start and run for about 10 seconds with the lens cap on. This gets you a clean intro, and will result in better tapes because the beginning of the tape usually gets bad first due to various factors.
It's written and read to more then the rest of the tape.
The beginning of the tape is not shielded from outside elements as well as tape which is not in the top layer (by released the cartridge catch you can see and touch the first little bit).
All the starting and rewinding can over time stretch that part of the tape.

Suggest a software for transfering videos from sony mini dv handycam to a laptop?

Philips A

Answer
To which laptop?
MiniDV camcorders allow computers to import high quality DV format video by connecting the camcorder's DV port to the computer's firewire port using a firewire cable. USB won't work. In the extremely remote event you can get USB streaming working, the video will be very compressed and not high quality DV.

If your laptop does not have a firewire port, hopefully it has an available expansion slot (PCMCIA or ExpressCard) so you can add one. If you cannot add a foirewire port to your computer and you cannot use a computer that has a working firewire port, your other option is to import analog video through a "capture card" or analog-digital converter like those from Pinnacle (Dazzle).

In the Windows XP (SP2) or newer, including Vista, MovieMaker is bundled. It can deal with importing video from a miniDV tape based camcorder over firewire. Sometimes it burps - WinDV has worked where MovieMaker could not. No version of MovieMaker can handle HDV format video. Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere always float to the top for HDV format video editing.

For Apple Macintosh OS 9.2 or newer (including OSX), iMovie is bundled. The new MacBooks and MacBook Air have no firewire port and there's no expansion slot to add one. ALL other Macs made in the last 10+ years have a firewire port. iMovieHD 05 was the first version to handle HDV. The current version is iMovie '09.

In this context, Firewire, IEEE1394, DV and i.LINK are all the same thing.

Which Sony Handycam?
Handycam is Sony's brand name for ALL their consumer camcorders. In the miniDV tape environment, this includes camcorders that capture standard definition only (the DCR-HC series) and high definition (HDR-HC series).

What is a good digital camcorder for very dark night recording?

Preferably under $500. It will be used for parkour videos, and most of the time it will be after sunset. It should be able to record very well in low light conditions, and should capture movement very well. Can anyone help me choose?

Answer
You need a modified sony digital8 camera with an infrared light source, The modified cameras are better than a normal camera, as they have no restriction on the opening of the lens aperture or infrared blocking device. In laymans terms it is a very strong night time video camera if used with an infrared light source.

www.sonyxray.com has info on low light filming, the link below is a good camera for what you want to do.

What is a good camcorder for recording video and uploading it to the internet?

mike9626

I have a website that I'm creating, and I would like to put some videos on it 5-10 minutes long. What type of camcorder, or what are the specifications to look for in a camcorder, that will produce a med to high quality and clear video?

Answer
The real question is what type of activity are you filming. This should drive the decision of the camera. A camera which is great in full sunlight at the beach may not be as good for those pictures of the family around the dinner table at night. Most cameras will upload to the computer fairly easily through firewire [better] or USB2 [not as good]. You should also consider if you want an automatic everything kind of camera or one which allows you to manipulate the settings. If you are looking for an everything camera and you get one which requires you to adjust the settings -- you will hate the camera... also the opposite... if you want to adjust the settings and the camera wants to do it for you... just as bad.

Bottom line, is to determine the type of scene you are filming, determine the special features you desire and how you want the camera to handle them.

Strongly suggest you get one with firewire ports for computer transfer... you will thank me for this suggestion.

Answer
Any sort of camera should work aslong as you have the necessary wires to connect it to the computer, depending on if your using a PC or a mac you could use windows movie maker or imovies both are very easy to use.

For the camera part of the question you would probably only need to shoot a portrait shot of yourself so even a webcam could work (if you don't mind the quality). But if you're thinking of buying a camera you'd want a good quality one to get the details of the makeup so something cheap like an HD flip camera could be good.

what brand of camcorder/video camera should I buy?

I want to buy an affordable camcorder (under $ 300) that I can use to take home videos and EASILY transfer them to my macbook and edit them on imovie. Sound quality is also very importnat to me. Other than that I don't need anything fancy. Does anyone have any personal recommendations? Also, what would be the advantage of buying a camcorder as opposed to an ipod touch that takes videos?

And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video

Answer
Use a tripod or some other steadying device. No more handheld. Turn up the lights - but not directly (you don't want glare).

There is no high definition (HD) or hard disc drive (HDD) camcorder for $300 worth buying. The only ones are the toy Flips or Aipteks.

What camcorder for youtube video making has taken the place of FLIP camcorders presently?

best camcorders on the market on ... High Speed Camera Hits The Japanese Market | Daily Digital Camera News
best camcorders on the market image

Hangtime U

Since the parent company has decided to stop producing FLIP camcorders on the market.

Answer
Youtube videos are made with everything from phones to pro camcorders, even this happened when the Flip was in full production. Just remember this axiom, cheap camcorder, cheap, unwatchable videos, HD camcorder, needs big, expensive computer to edit with. Just because you own any video camcorder, do not expect to shoot outstanding videos.

Does it matter what type of MiniDV tape is used for MiniDV Hi-Definition camcorders?

Avz J

Some Hi-Definition camcorders on the market use MiniDV just like some non-HD camcorders. There seem to be two kinds of MiniDV tapes: the standard kind which is most commonly found, and a special, more expensive kind which seems to be aimed at HD consumers. Would it be better to use a standard MiniDV tape in an HD MiniDV camcorder, or would it be better to use the more expensive kind?

Answer
they are the same.
however, miniDV has been on the market for over 10 years now and if you have to buy tape in an emergency from an unknown vendor, i would recomment the HDV label because that at least would be new stock.

connecting a studio or condenser mic to a camcorder?

best camcorders with mic input on Best Hd Camcorder With Microphone Input
best camcorders with mic input image

killyouing

I am wanting to connect my studio mic (which requires phantom power) to my camcorder mic input so I can have better sound quality. Will doing that damage the camcorder or the mic at all? The camcorder is a Canon Vixia hf100 if that makes any difference. Thanks in advance!

Answer
A pro-grade "studio" condenser mic will use an XLR connector. The easiest way to do what you want will be to use aXLR adapter like a BeachTek DXA-6 or juicedLink CX231 that can also provide phantom power. Then, the XLR adapter plugs into the Canon FS100's 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo audio-in jack.

The good news is that these XLR adapters also have manual audio control - which the FS100 does not have. If you are using a single mic, be sure to put the "M"ono/"S"tereo switch on the XLR adapter in "M"ono mode. If it is in "S"tereo mode, only the right audio channel will be recorded in the camcorder.

Using a 1/8" cable tail adapter to XLR won't work because it does not carry phantom power.

The USB jack on the FS100 will not support any mics that use a USB cable. That connection is used ONLY for transferring video and stills OFF of the camcorder memory. Not for external audio connection.

How to use a boom mic without having a mic input in my camcorder?

Q. Hello. I am an about to work on a film using a camcorder. There isnt a mic input in my camera. i want better sound quality so my actors dont have to yell their lines. How can i do so? please help. I dont have the kind of money to buy a new camcorder. thank you :) <3

Answer
You use a separate audio recorder, like a Zoom H1 ($99.00). You can even use another video camera to pick up the audio (if you place it near your talent and out of camera sight). In fact just about all film makers use a field recorder and mics. The Zoom H1 is about your least expensive audio recorder to get decent sound. Use a clapper board (or clap your hands in front of the camera) to 'mark' your audio/video sync spot which you'll match up when you edit your film.
