I'm a YouTube beauty guru looking for a good HD camcorder, but I am on a budget! I do need it to have continuous automatic focus, please. What is your pick for the best HD camcorder in 2012 under $200?

p.s. I have a Flip UltraHD, so please do not suggest that one. Thanks!

Answer
The Toshiba Camileo line that starts with X100 & the JVC Everio E10.
These are the only 2 in this price range that shoot full HD & have optical zoom,
(the kind that doesn't lose any clarity when you zoom, as opposed to digital zoom).

I need to find a digital camera for myself to keep for at least a couple years. It has to be under $100 and have a flash. I would prefer it have a rechargeable battery, use SD Cards and double as a camcorder but that's not too important. Please include where I can buy it online or in store. Thanks.
I've cut out a few thing and can go up to $175. But that's like my max.

Answer
You ask a lot in a camera for under $100-
Consider the Canon A590 IS has image stabilizer, aperture/shutter priority, and also try Canon A470.
On line:
Beach Camera
B&H Photo
Abe's of Maine
Adorama

What is a good video editing software for a beginner?

Tommy

Hey i'm planning on buying a Canon HV40 camcorder soon and i've been looking at all the youtube videos shot with HV40 and they list a lot of different video editing programs such as sony vegas 9, adobe elements, CS3, etc. I was wondering which one would you recommend for a first timer that is also under $100. I'm a pretty quick learner with computer software so i don't want something too elementary. Thank you!

Answer
if you want a simple meat and potato then go with premier elements
if you want for pro and more features go with sony vegas

John

I own a HDV cam (Canon XHA1s) but since the LCD monitor is too small I am considering to buy a monitor that goes on top of this camcorder.
What's the name of those monitors (the appropriate word or terminology) and what brands are there to be known as the best?

Thanks for your help.

Answer
It is hard to find a search word for what you want. I used "7" LCD monitor" and then found many on B&H Photo's website. Brands such as Glidecam, Ikan, Delvcam, etc.

Ikan is one of the more popular ones and they offer many sizes and resolutions, etc. BTW, you can always use a portable DVD player if you're on a tight budget.

What notebook would you recommend for running intensive applications?

Buddy

I primarily need a notebook...

... for intensive applications (Adobe Creative Suite 2 Premium, Dreamweaver, FrontPage, etc.)
... to store music, photos and videos (also, video editing)
... to play games
... to connect to networks (wired/wireless)

The notebook should have

... Lots of hard drive space for storing personal, business and multimedia files
... DVD burner
... plenty of memory (1 GB +) to run multiple intensive applications
... If possible, dedicated video memory - for video editing
... S-Video output for connection to a TV
... IEEE1394 (FireWire) so I can connect my camcorder
... Card reader so I can download photos from my camera
... Ethernet/wireless so I can connect to networks

Price: as cheap as possible

What do you recommend?

Answer
Apple MacBook Pro by far! The MacBook Pro has been updated with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, along with more RAM and hard drive storage. I have the top-of-the-line 17-inch model, a thing of beauty clad in sleek aluminum.

Still only one-inch thin, the MacBook Pro also remains one of the lightest notebooks and it does come with a 15.4-inch widescreen display. This 5.6-pound notebook is excellent for home or office use but is portable and compact enough to take on the road.

Using the MacBook Pro is a pleasure, and it didnât take me too long to fall in love with the 17 inch screen, whose optional glossy treatment is perfect for watching movies. The notebook comes with an infrared, six-button remote, so you can enjoy movies from across the room.

I like the MagSafe Power Adapter, which disconnects from the notebook if you trip over the cord. For this model, Apple added the MagSafe Airline Adapter, which uses the same concept but connects to an in-seat power port (a $59 option, not included). The MacBook Proâs illuminated keyboard and motion-sensor technology for protecting the hard drive help make this a solid pick for business travelers.

The big improvement is the upgrade from Intelâs 2.16-GHz Core Duo processor to a 2.33-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Like the previous CPU, the Core 2 Duo has two processing cores, but now each chip has 4MB of shared L2 cache. That cache allows the Core 2 Duo to store more data nearby so that it makes fewer passes to the main memory.

Speaking of memory, Appleâs computers have long been RAM weaklings, with standard configurations that paled next to their Windows counterparts, but Apple corrected that nicely. The 2.33-GHz 15-inch MacBook Pro comes with 2GB of 667-MHz DDR2 SDRAM standard, twice that of the previous version. I maxed out the system with 3GB of RAM, for an extra $575. Thatâs overkill for all but the most demanding power users like myself - I run my home network from it.

I downloaded the free Mac BootCamp, which enables Macs to run Windows XP. http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/

Productivity performance was decent. I suspect this may be due to the fact that Windows uses only a small partition of the MacBook Proâs hard drive (although you can set it to use more) and that Boot Camp itself has some performance overhead. BEWARE that using this now opens the MAC to the same malware attacks as the PC'ers are experiencing.

I ran MobileMark to test the battery life, the MacBook Proâs battery lasted 2 hours and 53 minutes with Wi-Fi off, compared with the average runtime of 3:41 for mainstream notebooks. I also ran a DVD rundown test and got 2 hours and 58 minutes with Wi-Fi on (compared with 3 hours and 5 minutes on the13.3-inch MacBook). Thatâs a decent runtime considering the larger size of this display, but the bottom line is that you should go with the slower (and cheaper) 2.16-GHz processor if you want more endurance.

Wireless antenna strength is supposed to no longer be a problem with Appleâs high-end notebooks, but I noticed a weaker signal with this MacBook Pro than with one of my other Mac's desktop in the same location. Compared with my Toshiba notebook, the MacBook Pro wasnât too far off with scores of 12.6 Mbps at 15 feet and 9.6 at 50 feet.

Question about traveling the speed of light?

best camcorder ever on HDR-CX730E | High Definition on Flash Memory (AVCHD) | Overview ...
best camcorder ever image
Q. Let's say I had the best camcorder ever, and mankind had a spaceship that could travel the speed of light. And they allowed me to put the camera at the tip of the spaceship and a constant stream to their monitors at NASA. Seeing on how when we travel the speed of light we are going through time at the fastest rate possible, what would it look like on the monitor?
And when it stopped traveling, would you be able to see the future from the present?

Answer
You can only go arbitrarily close to the speed of light (with respect to some reference), not at it.

Near the speed of light (from the point of view of an observer), light would still move away from you and toward you at the speed of light as seen from your point of view. Your field of vision would become constricted to the direction of travel and experience colour shift and lengths would dilate differently in different directions - see other answers.

At the speed of light (impossible) your whole journey would take zero time from your point of view, even if it lasted forever. If you travelled a finite distance at the speed of light (impossible) it would appear to you that you instantly teleported a distance in space and jumped into the future.

The reason that light can (and must) travel at the speed of light is that it has no mass.

Is the Canon XA10 HD Professional Camcorder good for film making?

Q. I'm starting out so this would be my first camcorder I have ever used.

Answer
Hi "Bittercold":

Since you already asked twice last month about miniDV camcorders, I won't repeat any of the other Y!A pros' advice on that subject. I will, however, point you back to fellow Contributor "L's" Answer to you regarding the AVCHD format issues that the Canon XA10 records all its files in: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AmxPdh4o1WYVv83bjYM0h6Xsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20120324030021AAL8XNH

If you are interested in "filmmaking", then you are going to have to plan for editing, and AVCHD's lossy compression codec isn't the best for frame-accurate edits.

If you've never done any camcorder shooting at all, you might be better served starting out with something used from a good camera store or pawn shop, and making sure some of your budget money goes into the extra RAM & fast hard drives (among other things) that editing HD footage will require. Try a $250-$500 test run, before you go spending almost 2-grand.

Feel free to update us with what kind of stuff you plan to shoot, for better feedback. It makes a difference:

When I get hired by Coach Schuman or one of the other Yahoo!Sports' "Rivals 100" coaches to videotape a football event, they expect me to bring a miniDV format camcorder, not a flash-card AVCHD or H.264 unit, no matter how expensive. And small-is-good with run & gun sports shooting, so I use a Canon ZR-series or Panasonic GS-80 (both under $700), rather than my $3000 Sony Z1U. We shoot everything in 4:3 Standard Def, since that's what the editor, the other coaches, and all the other shooters work in. And the low-compression DV codecs make for good action footage and easy edits.

The Canon XA10 has pro-audio features, good Canon glass optics, dual SD slots, etc., but I can't say if it's the best deal for you.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

how do i change the video format from avi to mov on the insignia camcorder?

best camcorder video format image

EMeredith

i need to change the default video file format from avi to mov because i have a mac. it's the Insignia NS-DV111080F camcorder. anyone know?

Answer
You can change the video format by following these steps: First, make sure that "Simple Mode" is turned off. Turn the Mode dial to the camera icon and press Menu. Select the File Format Icon (MOV) and press the center navigation control button. You may then highlight MOV or AVI. Since the camcorder has a touch screen, some selections can be made via that mode. More details can be found in the owner's manual, downloadable at the link below. I hope this helps.

What Camcorder works well with Sony Vegas 9?

Environmen

I want to buy a camcorder and I have Sony Vegas. So, can anyone tell me if they own a camcorder which its format works with Vegas 9? My old camcorders Video format didn't work with Vegas it only showed the audio when I dragged it onto the timeline.(I sold it so don't reply about how to fix the problem)

Answer
I use the Canon FS100 and it works great! It's also available for quite cheap now, around £140 in the UK- It exports it onto a .MOD format on an SD Card- and people often moan about the format saying you can't use it, but it works with Sony Vegas and can be easily converted for other software

It has good picture quality for the price, and it is possible to add an external mic too!

Suggestions for a simple Mac compatible video camera?

best camcorders mac compatible on Installing Compatible UVC Creative Live! Cams in Mac
best camcorders mac compatible image

jggb

I have a MacBook and a PC but want to use the Mac for video. I need something reliable and simple!

Answer
What is your budget?

Any camcorder can connect to any computer - but some need a cable, others need software to convert video.

Any MiniDV tape camcorder connects to almost any Mac made in the last ten years or so using a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable. (The only exception is the MacBook Air - it has no firewire port). DV format video requires no change. HDV requires the Apple Intermediate Codec to be installed (this is a custom install using the Mac's system discs - it is a QuickTime component).

Any hard drive or flash memory connects using USB, but you need to convert the video using StreamClip.

High def hard drive or flash memory consumer camcorders compress into AVCHD. Only the most current iMovieHD or FinalCut can deal with AVCHD encoded video - and the Mac needs to have an Intel CPU.

DVD based camcorders are not worth wasting money on - and barely make decent doorstops.

What video camera will work well with Mac book pro?

chiefdom

I have a Sony 40gig hd video camera but it doesn't work with Mac. I would like to buy something under 5 grand. Something that works easily with the mac book pro. I am not a pro buy any means but do enjoy mud and water filming any help would be great thanks.

Answer
I am guessing you want to get a whole new camera then to work with your macbook pro. The best place to find mac compatible video cameras is going to be on apple.com there are quite a few different choices including a Cannon HG10 High Definition Camcorder which is similar to the sony 40 gig, because it records in hd and has a 40 gig hard drive that it records to. The damage will only be 1,000 dollars, but if you need to buy any video software that is where it gets really expensive. If you are going for a full blown professional camera then I would suggest the Canon GL2 Mini DV Camcorder. It will be enough equipment to record professional and quality video, but will run you 2,800 dollars before tax. Another option for you is to use a av input converter for mac.

How come the more a child grows the less we remember them as a baby?

Misti J

I want to remember my son as a baby in my arms and it just seems to get harder and harder as he grows older. Lots of other parents I know experience this too. I know it's easy to look at pictures but why can't I remember a lot about it? Maybe that's why so many parents have more children to bring back that feeling.

Answer
I too have asked this question many times.
My advice to you is to purchase a camcorder.
When I get in the mood to remember my daughter as a baby, or how she was at different ages of her life, I watch my home movies. I always end up crying my eyes out b/c I miss it so much. Hearing her first learn to talk, and watching her play, or even as a newborn just laying there and sleeping, brings back so many memories that I thought I forgot. You do not forget, I remember each and every minute that I recorded of her, but just need to be reminded of it sometimes....

What would you recommend for filming a babys birth? My husband is deployed and will miss it. ?

Holly

Should I get a digital camera with video or a camcorder? What would be the easiest way to send the videos to him? Camcorder that films on DVD type format or a digital camera? Im so confused as to what is the best.

Answer
for this very important event. try and coordinate with someone who already has a camera they know how to use. I often sit standby for births but then I shoot video for a living.

It is an important event, you might want to get someone who knows what they are doing and is not squeamish!! but if you have to get a camera, keep this in mind...
with MiniDV you can shoot up to an hour on one tape but then you have to capture the video then edit and compress to author to DVD. if you get one that shoots to memory stick, it is already compressed but your video time is limited, and you can almost instantly upload to a web page.
another alternative, if you have time to plan and the timing is right. get a laptop and a cam, download Skype, and film it live to him.

God luck :-)

Can i format mini dvd for camcorders onto my computer is there a free download for editting and formatting?

Vicky

is there a free download to format my camcorder mini dvd discs so I can use them in my camcorder after formatting them off of my computer?

Answer
It depends on the miniDVD. RW, yes. Others, after "finalizing", no. But you don't do that in the computer - you do it using the camcorder and follow the instructions in the camcorder manual for unfinalizing and deleting the files.

Too bad you did not toll us which camcorder - we might be able to point you to a link for the manual if you don't have it.

ANSWERS, what is the best camcorder for snowboarding, READ BELOW?

Q. I want to get an HD camcorder for under $600 or a consumer non HD camcorder for under $400, I want to get a camcorder that has awesome clarity to shoot sponsor videos, and is a Flash Memory or MiniDV better for snowboarding and to make DVDs. Thanks

Answer
after working in the film industry for almost 3 years and shooting snowboard/ski videos for local mountains like echo mountain, and copper mountain, here is what i have to say.

HD is not a easy rout to go. HD is a very unforgiving environment. First off, you need an HD camcorder. Those run about 1000 dollars averagely. You would also need a video editing program that supports editing in HD. Sony vegas is a common program but that runs you 500 bucks. You also need a ton of ram and a good graphics card that can process the HD video while editing. In the end you need an HD dvd burner that can burn your HD footage. If you fall short of one of these things the video in the end will not come out in true HD but will be brought down to normal SD quality. If you have the money and tools to shoot, edit, and play in HD then go for it!

I would go for miniDV any day. flash memory can only store a little data and the quality is not as supurb as mini dv

In my opinion i shot my first snowboard video on a panasonic pvgs 320. Its a great camcorder that has 3ccd's and has the best picture for a camera under 400 dollars. I currently own it and love it. If you don't want that camcorder then get something that is 3ccd. It will be making the people that watch it go WOW! 3ccd gives you supurb color and I highly reccomend it.

check out my youtube listed below. I have my first snowboard video on there and the quality may seem bitter (because its on youtube) but trust me the quality is the best for the price you pay.

also please check out my tutorial on my youtube below that shows you how to build a steadicam. that will let you ride behing your buddies and get spectacular footage thats SUPER STABLE. also invest in a wide angle for close up shots near the jumps and rails.

SleepBack

i was just wondering what the best VIDEO camera i can get for around $500 that will be used in low lighting for the EDC LV rave that i am going to in june. i do not want to use a light on the camera either, just something that will be decent looking in the low light.
well i mean i am not trying to make a legitimate video trailer that has to be super clear HD. i just want my friends back home to be able to see what i went to... and i was also wondering if you can help me find something that i can get alot of footage with, as in long battery and large space, it will be 3 days long, but i obviously will not capture it all

Answer
"good video capture" under low lighting conditions = large lens diameter and large imaging chip. In my opinion, this means a lens diameter of 70mm or larger and an imaging chip of 1/3" (3CCD or 3CMOS) or larger.

There is no video camera, camcorder or still image capture device (that captures video as a convenience feature) in your price range that has these large lens systems or imaging chips.

If we start with the least expensive camcorder that does quality, that would be the Sony HDR-FX1000. It is about 6x more than your budget.

In the $500 range, the lens diameters and single imaging chips are too small to provide good low-light capture. On top of that, raves are loud. Chances are very high that the audio captured (using the camcorder auto audio gain) will be very muddy and with lots of static. Some sort of manual audio control (or "attenuator") must be used. The best I can get you is something in the Canon HF R or HF M range. Learn to use the audio control (in the manual). The video captured will be grainy.

Which one is the Best of the Best Handycam With clear 1080i Hd recorder and all latest updations?

"Handycam" is Sony's brandname for all their consumer-grade and "prosumer"camcorders. The SOny HDR-FX1000 captures low-compression DV and HDV format video to miniDV tape and captures JPEG still images to SDHC cards.

With a LARGE lens filter diameter (72mm) and LARGE 1/3" 3CMOS imaging chip array, it will do very well under low light conditions (any camcorder can do well under good lighting conditions).

With separate manual zoom and focus rings on the lens barrel, manual audio control on the OUTSIDE of the camcorder (not buried in a menu), LANC port, headphone jack and several other externally accessible controls, the biggest difference between it and a pro-series camcorder is that it has only a stereo 1/8" (3.5mm) audio input (just use a XLR adapter from BeachTek or juicedLink)... and it does not do HDCAM format...

Of course, to get the video from this camcorder's digital tape into your computer, this assumes your computer has a firewire port... and you can add the optional external flash memory recorder from Sony if you don't want to use digital tape.

If you mean to include other manufacturers other than Sony, please let us know that...
