VHS-C vs. flash memory camcorders?

I still use a JVC GX-AX200 VHS-c camcorder from 1995 with the Random Assemble feature. I've wondered about updating, but all the new digital camcorders I've seen tend to produce grainy pictures, where my old one has a beautiful picture. Other than the sheer size of it, it works fine, but it just seems to obsolete (not having an external screen and having physical zoom). Should I update to a digital format or continue to convert my videos from tape to my computer?

Answer
I originally wasn't going to spend so much on a new camcorder. I had bought the Canon HF 100 a few years ago, and was fairly happy with it. It was nice, but definitely had its drawbacks. So, I started researching Canon's new line for 2011 and was torn between the M40 and G10. Having the new CMOS Pro sensor was a must. Everything I read about the low light capabilities sold me. Basically Canon went with a smaller pixel count (exactly 1920 x 1080), which in turn makes the pixels larger and better in low light shooting. I originally bought the M40 and was very happy with it, but started to realize it wasn't fitting all my needs. That went back, and I went with the G10. I have not looked back since!

How much waste would an independent accounting agent find if they audited the government?

We keep hearing about debt ceilings, deficits, sequesters, budget cuts, and we're constantly being threatened with shorter school days and fewer public services like cops and firefighters if we don't vote to support higher taxes. But I wonder how many BILLIONS in waste we would fine if we were to hire the best accounting company in the country to audit the federal government? How much ridiculous WASTE do you think they would find?

Here are just a few examples:

* Washington spends $25 billion annually maintaining unused or vacant federal properties.

* Government auditors spent the past five years examining all federal programs and found that 22 percent of them â costing taxpayers a total of $123 billion annually â fail to show any positive impact on the populations they serve!

* A GAO audit classified nearly half of all purchases on government credit cards as improper, fraudulent, or embezzled. Examples of taxpayer-funded purchases include gambling, mortgage payments, liquor, lingerie, iPods, Xboxes, jewelry, Internet dating services, and Hawaiian vacations.

* Federal agencies are delinquent on nearly 20 percent of employee travel charge cards, costing taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars annually.

* The federal government owns more than 50,000 vacant homes.

* Members of Congress have spent hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars supplying their offices with popcorn machines, plasma televisions, DVD equipment, ionic air fresheners, camcorders, and signature machines â plus $24,730 leasing a Lexus, $1,434 on a digital camera, and $84,000 on personalized calendars.

Can I bring my camera to a concert?

I bought tickets to go to a concert in 2013 and I printed out my tickets and on it it says: No cameras/recorders. And by asking if I can bring my camera I'm not trying to make it irrelevant, but don't people bring their cameras to concerts all the time?
It's at the PNC Arena in Raleigh, NC & the concert is for One Direction.

What will happen if I do bring my camera?
Any idea?

Answer
For some concerts, they do allow you to bring cameras/camcorders. It will say if it's allowed on the ticket. But in your situation, you're not allowed to because it says it on the ticket. You could sneak your camer in without getting caught(usually hard to do). But if you do sneak it in then you could take pictures and record the concert. But when/if you get caught, they'll kick you out of the concert.

$200-$300 dollar range. 720p or 1080p HD recording. Hookup for external microphone and if you can recommend a good external mic that works well please do. With most camcorders so much focus is placed on video quality(not complaining!) that consideration for the audio being recorded is thrown out of the window. Been shopping around a lot but wanted an opinion from the Yahoo Answers family.

What is the cheapest video camera with 3CCD chip?

gangstasme

What is the cheapest entry level pro camera that will make recording look more like a film movie and not like some 300 dollar camcorder with a 3CCD chip?

Answer
The CHEAPEST 3ccd camcorder I could find is the Panasonic PV-GS320. Since it does not have a mic-in jack it would fall off my short list.

3CCD is not necessarily "best". There are many other dependencies... like lighting, camera angles... and total surface area of the imaging chips. If the total surface area of the 3CCD chips is small, a single CCD or CMOS or 3CMOS chip camera will out perform those three CCDs.

If you are making a film, and want it to look like film, you want to be doing 24p... the imaging chip is nearly irrelevant. The Panasonic DVX100B is a good one. Look into the Canon HV20 and the Canon XHA1, too.

And remember, the video and imaging is only a part of the "system". You also need to consider lighting, camera angles, story line, planning with storyboards, audio, sound design, script, make-up, wardrobe, editing, music and lots more.

Which brand is better for a HD camcorder, and should I get a camcorder with 3CCD or CMOS chips?

Mike2345

Which brand is better for a HD camcorder, and should I get a camcorder with 3CCD or CMOS chips? Also, which format is best, a hard drive camcorder or Mini DV tape?

I will be using the camcorder for independent film.
My budget is from $1000 to $2000 Australian Dollars.

Answer
Before you decide your imaging chip requirements, you should decide your budget.

THEN see which camcorders fit your budget.

Then you will see what the camcorders in that range have in the way of imaging chips.

DV/HDV file format is "best". Least compression to the video stream and does not have the issues HDD cams have with vibration, altitude, process flow and data recovery. In the consumer camcorder environment, that means miniDV tape. It also means your computer needs to have a firewire port.

Hi Folks,

I am much interested in photography since my childhood. But till I was using Canon A3100 Point and Shoot camera.

I am willing to buy an entry level DSLR as I am an amateur. I googled much but arrived in a confusion. I have shortlisted 2 models. Please suggest the best one.

1) Canon 600 D - heard many positive reviews, but lens cost is more and there is no auto focus in video mode.

2) Sony SLT A58 - heard that lens costs cheaper. But is it rare in market ? I think auto focus in video mode is available.

Answer
Actually Canon has some great value priced lenses. Sony has limited line up of lenses and they are normally expensive.
Here is an article that should help you with your first DSLR purchase:
http://photography-with-any-camera.blogspot.com/2013/05/best-digital-slr-for-beginners.html

Also, don't buy a camcorder for video as one answerer suggested unless you don't care much about quality. With a right lens, an SLR will take much better video than any consumer grade camcorder. With SLR you can do selective focusing but a camcorder will give you flat videos- everything always in focus. Here is another read for you:

Whats better the canon gl1 or the canon gl2?

Victor

whats a better camera for filming the gl1 or gl2

Answer
Victor, as with all things in life, there is no such thing as "better" without qualifications.

Neither camera is good for filming since neither camera shoots film.

Neither camera is good for professional video.

Both cameras are adequate for upper end consumer grade video.

The GL1 is better if you're on a budget and can't afford a newer GL2.

Both cameras are pretty much dinosaurs though since they only shoot in Standard Definition and record to tape. All new camcorders worth buying shoot at least High Definition and record to flash memory of some type.

When I was in college from 1999-2003, we got about 10 Canon GL2's when they were brand new and as a one of the people who was in charge of maintaining them, I found that they broke constantly (particularly the plastic mount around the tripod socket and head/tape transport issues) and did poor white balance. On the good side, they performed well in low light and the built-in audio, though not XLR was very clean. Overall though, unless someone is giving you one now, I hardly think they're worth buying as they are going to be on their last legs in 2013.

Please tell me out of your own experience.
What type of camcorder is the best ?
What type of lens is the best?
Which brand camcorder last long?
What to look out for new camcorders.

Answer
with consumer camcorders, you take the lens that comes with the camera. professional video cameras that offer replaceable lenses do not take still pictures, that is a marketing "feature" of consumer grade cameras only. Pro gear uses large format ccd's, often 2/3 inch size, so a 16x lens is a pretty hefty piece of glass. Consumer 1/6 inch ccds can be fitted with a cheap 40x short focal length lens as no big deal. The most common manufacterers of pro-mount video lenses are Fujinon and Canon.

How to get a good quality in capturing video via a digital camcorder connected to pc via capture card?

Pr-AK-Ash

Im using a PC with Sony capture card.
My digital camcorder is Sony brand too.
Im using Ulead Video Studio 10 to capture & edit video.

Answer
If you want the best available quality, you need to transfer the digital information from the camcorder digitally. The last time I checked, "capture cards" typically use the AV cable connected to the camcorder. When this capture method is used, the yellow lead carrying the video out of the camcorder to the capture card is analog.

You did not tell us which Sony digital camcorder you are using.

If it is miniDV or Digital8 the video import from the camcorder to the computer should be done digitally using firewire/IEEE1394a/DV/i.link (all the same thing).

If it is a hard drive or flash memory digital camcorder, the video data file transfer will be over a USB cable.

If it is a DVD based camcorder, it really does not matter how you transfer the video - You would either rip the video from the DVD using something like HandBrake (presuming your computer has a drawer-loading DVD optical drive) or you would need an analog/digital bridge from Pinnacle (USB) or Canopus (firewire) if your computer's optical drive is a slot loader or reads CDs only. Either way, the video quality will not be very good.

What kind of video camera should I buy to shoot a sporting event?

top camcorders with viewfinder on Pentax K-5 IIs Review & Rating | PCMag.com
top camcorders with viewfinder image

Larry

I may be hired to work as a freelance videographer for high school sporting events. The company wants me to use my own equipment to shoot the games, which I am in the process of getting. They recommend I have an HD Prosumer camera. I've done some research, and I saw the Canon VIXIA HF G10 was pretty good and not overly priced. Does anyone have any recommendations about what other types of video cameras I can buy or give any more input about this camera I've look into? Also, is it best to get a camera that has the viewfinder on the side of the camera or on top of it?

Answer
For sports/fast action, generally something that does not do high compression AVCHD. Like a Sony HDR-FX7. Of course, this assumes your computer has a firewire port. If it does not and you are not willing to add one, then the Canon HF G series is decent.

You will also want a tripod (it can double as a monopod is you only extend one leg). You really should not capture video handheld. And your computer may need upgrading (CPU, RAM, fast external hard drive, video editor) to deal with the AVCHD compressed video.

If you are capturing on a bright sunny day, the LCD panel can be difficult to see - so the eyepiece viewfinder is much more useful.

An optional high capacity battery from the camcorder manufacturer is a good idea.

A shoulder-mount rig may be helpful, too.

If someone runs into you and breaks the camera, who pays to fix it?

Good luck.

How do I film in a different aspect ratio on my Camcorder?

Michael T

I have a Canon HG21 which shoots HD in regular 16x9, but i really want to film in 2:35:1 to make it look like a real film, how can I?

Answer
you can letterbox the 16:9 video in your computer video editor so it would emulated the letterbox used in a 2.35:1 film transfer. when shooting with the camcorder you need to "protect" the image, remembering that the very top and bottom of the viewfinder image will be lost to cropping.

funny that you want your 16:9 to look like "real film", because many real film directors protect for 16:9 ratio so that the movie will work on DVD widescreen. DVD sales is where most of the movie release money is made.

How does progressive video work?

top hd camcorders comparison on AMD Radeon HD 6570 (1GB) Review & Rating | PCMag.com
top hd camcorders comparison image

Derek

I know that interlaced video is where every other line is scanned from left to right, but I'm not sure what progressive video is. Is it where instead of every other line, every line is scanned from left to right; is it where instead of scanning from left to right, every line is just suddenly presented in a series; or is it where every line is just presented all at once? And does progressive video vary in how it's displayed if it's on a CRT or an LCD, or is at all the same?

Thank you... oh and one more question: does anyone know why 1080 was chosen as being high definition? Where did this specific resolution come from, and does this mean that 16mm film is technically the equivalent of above HD resolution?

Answer
All television cameras work by scanning. line by line, right to left, top to bottom. In interlace the top to bottom sequence is done twice per frame and the lines to be scanned are alternated. this results in 2 pictures called fields. By the use of fields the effective frame rate is doubled and eliminates flicker and insures smooth motion.

For progressive, the idea of fields is eliminated, and the top to bottom sequence is only done once per frame. When converting motion pictures to video, the use of interlace or progressive is a moot point because the source is a single frame of film. For modern camcorders that use very high compression, like AVCHD only one frame in 8 is actually taken so the idea of interlace does not apply. It is easier for the digital data to be stored in a progressive fashion. this does result in very poor motion resolution That is why 720HD is usually 60 fps, being about the same data rate as required for 1080HD but it reduces somewhat the flicker and motion problems.

Some dSLR cameras use CCDs that are scanned vertically?!!! This leads to some rather bizarre artifacts in motion video when the digitqal frames are read out as normal horizontal line scans.

Standards for HD was set by the ATSC (advanced television standards committee) as part of the roll out of digital television 20 years ago. The codec used is MPEG2, which requires macro blocks of 16x16 pixels. This works fine for 480x640, 480x720, 720x1280 and not quite for 1080x1920. Television HDTV is actually broadcast as 1088, the TV set does not use the first and last 4 lines. All other digital video compression schemes use the 16x16 pixel macro block except miniDV. miniDV is based on an earlier video standard called D1.

D1 at 300 mbps generally considered the video equivalent of 35mm motion picture film. ATSC HD is about 16mm equivalent. Most television work is done at 50 to 150 mbps. There are other issues involved in making a comparison, such as aspect ratio, so there is no exact comparison. Film has some issues like gate weave and judder than video does not have.

How do I put AVC/H.264 files from an HD camera and encode an AVCHD DVD to play in my Blu-Ray player?

usmcwartha

Seems like it should be real simple, but it's not. The Samsung camera I have records to MP4 files encoded as AVC/H.264. I should be able to encode to AVCHD and burn to a DVD and play that in my BD player. The software that comes with the camera is garbage. How do I do this? What software should I use? Seems all I can find are cryptic 10-step processes.

Answer
1) Get and install a video editing application that can deal with AVCHD video. Current versions of Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere float to the top for Windows/Vista. iMovieHD '8 or newer and current versions of Final cut for Macintosh (running on an Intel Mac).

2) When editing is complete, Save As or Export as an h.264/ACHD file. Burn the file to a DVD. Remember, reular single lyr and double layer DVDs hold only 4.7 gig and 8.5 gig, respectively. In comparison, BluRay blanks for BluRay recorders star at 25 gig. The amount of compression you apply in the final render process will determine what can fit - and the more you compress the worse the video quality gets.

3) Yes. The software in the box with the camcorders is garbage. It is the same with Panasnic, Sony, Canon and JVC... Samsung is not the only one that does this.

best zoom camcorder for sports image

Adistrohm

I need a high quality camcorder no more than $300. We will be using it to stream high school sports live, which brings me to my supplement question. Supposedly, I know someone who knows how to set up this live streaming. But how would this be set up exactly? You would obviously need an internet connection (wifi or ethernet), but I'm not sure we have access to this.... Is it possible to use satellite streaming? Or is that impossible without internet and would it be very expensive? Thanks!

Answer
If "know someone who knows how to set up this live streaming" then start with them on which camcorders to investigate.

"Satellite streaming" means there is a satellite uplink (including a big dish and transmitters and such) and someone's paid for transponder space and time. It also presumes a "satellite downlinks" and access to processing the feed. I won't assume anything, but I don't *think* this will be available to you.

At $300 you are basically at the entry level for consumer grade camcorders. While these are typically well made electronics, I cannot characterize them as being "high quality" relative to video broadcast standards. Since there are no consumer camcorders that can digitally stream the video over USB until you hit the $800 range (like a Canon HV40, or any others using miniDV tape media storage will work because they use firewire), the best you can do is stream analog video.

So, given your budget - which is likely not enough - we have:

Any camcorder with AV-out. This is pretty much any camcorder - but you need to be sure the AV-out can be used to monitor what the camera can see - again, pretty much any camcorder. This plugs into an "Analog/Digital converter". The A/D converter plugs into the computer. Then the "someone who knows how to set up this live streaming" can finish up... including the connection to the Local Area Network that connects to the internet...

Use a tripod or other steadying device. Consider using a camera that uses a wired remote. The control is mounted to the tripod handle and controls zoom and other things. Use the AC adapter and be sure the camcorder's "auto sleep" is disabled. You are using a camcorder in a manner for which it was not designed.

Some Sony and Canon camcorders have a combo AV/remote port. You can do one or the other - not both at the same time. Some camcorders use a LANC. This will work great. As far as I know, the least expensive with a separate LANC is the Canon HV40... then comes the Sony HDR-FX7 (I think). These are both more than you want to spend.

What is the best camcorder/camera that has the best zoom for video?

knowitall

I want to know what the best camera is that has the most zoom mostly for videos. I went to best buy to look for one and i found a Sony DCR-SX85 that has 70x zoom but the video quality is very low. I want one that has very high zoom and records HD video. please leave links. Thank you
im looking for one that is less than $300

Answer
HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video.http://simplevideoediting.com/learn/part1_camcorder_choices.htm

Hey there,
My friends and I are going to start a high-quality web show for reviewing video games.
We are looking for a prosumer camcorder that shoots high-end video.

What would you recommend for under 800$?

Answer
JVC Everio GZHD7 would offer a high level of manual controls since we first spent some time with the HD7 at CES in January. The big question has been whether the camcorder would perform up to its billing. The HD7 records video using a new flavor of MPEG-2 compression that wanders as high as 30 Mbps in FHD ("Full HD" 1920 x 1080) mode. That led us to wonder whether that venerable HDV format had finally met its match. As it turns out, video performance is not the reason to buy the JVC GZ-HD7 â but it remains one of the yearâs most intriguing models.

Can someone help me with information on prosumer camcorders?

Was the 3DS worth it?

That Guy

I could have Checked a review for this question but I'd rather hear from customers not an editor in IGN. Was the 3DS worth it? I don't want to hear Andy "well if your into these games" no thanks I want to hear what you think.

Answer
Well, I have own the Nintendo 3DS since April 6 2011.

And it was 100% Worth it to me.

Because I can play music (even with the system close).

I can LOWER the VOLUME of 3D so it does NOT give you headaches for the first time in your life (if you're the kind of person to ever get headaches from 3D, otherwise just turn the 3D all the way up).

And I can also turn the 3D OFF Completely.

And 3D is good for working out our eye muscles & brain to keep them in shape as shown in this link:

http://www.aoa.org/x17309.xml

And it has a Joystick.

And all the 3DS Games, including the Downloadable 3D Games are in 7.1 Surround Sound and I have been using my "PLANTRONICS GAMECOM 777" to play everything on my 3DS when I am at home, and the best example of 7.1 Surround Sound so far for me is Zelda 3D and 2nd is Thor 3DS (I just leave the separate microphone plug, unplugged, because the 3DS has a Very Excellent Built-in microphone, but also there is no place to plug it in for the 3DS).

And the Nintendo 3DS does everything in 60 fps (which makes it the only electronic that plays Video Games in 60 fps, because all other electronics only do 30 fps for everything)

And the Nintendo 3DS has downloadable 3D Music videos from today's American music artist which I have already downloaded the 3 free 3D Music Videos to watch anywhere and the 3DS has 3D "Blue Man Group" video and College Humor (in 3D) with the FREE "Nintendo Video" App that you can download (but its 4 3D Videos at a time and they replace them once in a while) and I can download cheap downloadable 3D Apps & 3D games costing from 99 cents to $5.99 and the Nintendo 3DS also has FREE downloadable 3D Apps & 3D Games, which I have already downloaded 3 Free 3D Apps and I have downloaded 2 Free 3D Games and the 3DS has a 3D Camera and I have already used the 3DS 3D Camera to take 3D photos and I have uploaded some of my 3D footage online using the Nintendo 3DS's Web Browser to upload my 3D footage online and I have used my 3DS Web Browser to also download other peoples 3D footage from the Internet on my 3DS Web Browser and I have view all sorts of 3D content on 3D Websites online on my 3DS's Web Browser and I have use my 3DS 3D Camera to play 3D Augmented Reality games as well and it's all in 3D without the Glasses using the 3DS 3D Camera and It has beautiful 3D HD graphics that equal to that of a 3D HD version of Wii Graphics and I have Streamed 3D Videos Online on my 3DS in the eShop and I have also Watch 3D Trailers for upcoming 3D movies coming to Theaters in 3D and I have done all of this in 3D Without the Glasses.

And the 3DS with a Wi-Fi Update can RECORD 3D Videos in 60 fps (unlike other camcorders, that only Record in 2D Only and in up to 30 fps only).

So for $249 (when I got it, but it's $169 now) for Nintendo 3DS I can look forward to buy the greatest Games ever, and all in 3D Without the Glasses like Cave Story 3D and Kid Icarus and Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 using the MOTION SENSORS to play the game like if you were turning a real steering wheel to turn the Kart left & right and also play such other 8 GB 3D Games like TheatRhytem Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts 3D and Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D and Crush 3D and Shinobi and Animal Crossing and Rodea the Sky Soldier and Michael Jackson: the Experience 3D and Ridge Racer 3D and Super Street Fighter 4 3D and Monster Hunter 4 and Golden Sun 4 and Star Fox 3D and Zelda 3D and Sonic Generations 3D and Tetris 3D and Resident Evil: Revelations and Tales of the Abyss 3D and Tekken 3D which also has the 3D Movie Tekken the Movie 3D in it to watch and also play other 8 GB 3D HD games as Spider Man 3D and 100% of the 3DS games are in HD 3D Without the Glasses.

Also, the screen is perfectly fine, in terms of resolution. Anyway, itâs the pixel density that matters, not the actual number of pixels. The 3DS pixel density is MUCH sharper than an average HD TV of, for example, 32 inches. Itâs perfectly fine. Not everything has to be 1080p you know. Since 1080p at 32 inches is worse than just 240p on the 3DS.

And they're making Angry Birds 3D as a downloadable game.

And the 3DS is getting DLC (Downloadable Content) like Xbox Live for a bunch of 3DS games to add content to the game later on for Free.

And 1 of the Free 3D Apps I have downloaded was Netflix.

And Netflix is getting 3D Movies in the next few months.

And 100% of the people who have said that they get headaches from 3D, have said that after up to 1 week of using the 3DS they NO LONGER get headaches anymore and that they now play with the 3D all the way up 100% all the time, non-stop.

But I have never had any problem with the 3D at all, but each person has a different experience with the 3D ON during the first week.

And you can now pay to download 3D Videos on the 3DS.

And the 3DS is getting Hulu Plus before the end of this year (2011) as a Free downloadable App and Hulu already has 3D Content.

What Should i get for xmas? Help!?

Jim

Hey so im a 16 year old guy and idk what to get for christmas! I already have a xbox, ipod, and computer, so dont say those. I was thinking about a 3ds cuz they looked cool, should i?!

Reviews about hard disk comcorders? Which one is better?

top camcorders ratings image

Such as the ones like JVC Everio, or sony or any of the DVD camcorders.

Are DVD recorders better than hard disk?

Answer
The current top 3 HDD camcorders are:
Sony HDR-SR1
Sony DCR-SR100
JVC GC-MG505

You can read their reviews here:
http://www.camcorderinfo.com/ratings.php

Personally, I bought the DCR-SR100, and I'm very happy with the video quality. I like that it stores to the hard drive, and that I don't have to buy any additional media (blank tapes/DVDs, etc.)
The video quality is probably on par with the DVD camcorders as they both record video in the same mpeg2 format. The downside for DVD camcorders (at least for me) is that each mini-DVD only holds about 20 minutes of video - whereas the 30G HD can hold > 7 hours of video at the best quality setting.

Panasonic 3 CCD camcorder?

Dj Lab Rat

I'm lookin to buy a panasonic 3 ccd camcorder. can anyone recommend a good model. Preferably not priced very high. Also how would you rate the GS 500 vs. GS 400. And how would you rate the GS 180

Answer
I would recommend buying the PV-GS500, or PV-GS400, depending on what you plan to use it for.

Ratings-

PV-GS500: 7.5/10

PV-GS400: 8/10

I rated the 400 higher because it has more manual controls, and for me, that is really important. But if you don't plan on using manual controls as much, than the 500 would be better for you.

PV-GS400:

Pros: Excellent manual control for a consumer camcorder, 3CCD, great video, wireless remote, wired remote (with zoom button, mic, and record), Optical Image Stabilizer, pop up flash, 3'' LCD screen, Manual Focus/Zoom ring, top loading tape.

Cons- Low light filming, portability

PV-GS500:

Pros- Manual Zoom ring, flash, 3CCD, excellent video, true widescreen, Optical Image Stabilizer, top loading tape, wireless remote.

Cons: Small LCD screen for shooting 4:3, Low light filming, portability.

So here is where you make the decision. I would recommend the PV-GS400 if you what to have superior manual control and great video. But, i would recommend the PV-GS500 if you would rather have slightly better video quality. Also, the 400 is hard to find these days. You can get a 500 for as cheap as $449 online. The PV-GS400, however, is hard to find under $900. Either way, these camcorders are both fantastic and you would be happy with either of them.

P.S.

I would rate the PV-GS180: 6/10

Its video isn't as sharp as the previously discussed camcorders. It has no focus or zoom ring. However, it is a very good cam for its price.

I plan on making films or short films and am about to come into some money. I'm currently working with a panasonic dvx-100a. I will have a budget of about 3,000 but the chapter the better. I want to go HD and also purchase some basic equipment (boom, mics, etc.). Should I save over a thousand for such equipment?

Also I'll need to edit it on a macbook with 4gb ram. I can upgrade the ram if needed also.

Answer
You are close, so close...

In the Canon line the cheapest pro-sumer is the single sensor, non gen-lock, XF100 for $3300. While it comes with about everything you need, you will still want at LEAST one 64 gig card ($250).

And the Canon is pretty-much the bargain in these cameras. The Panasonic AG-AC130A is over $4,000 and gets HALF the data-rate (quality) of the XF100. Panasonic cameras closer to $3000 are getting LESS data than the older, SD MiniDv tape based cameras.

Given the choice between a new Panasonic for somewhere around $2000 and a used MiniDv like the Canon GL-2 or XL series...I'd go with the MiniDv cameras (well under $1000) and get a solid-state drive to attach to the cameras (about $1000). The 4:2:2 compression of MiniDv and the 13 gigs/hr of data means that with proper editing, it can be up-converted to the HD frame-size with better quality than native HD from a camcorder getting 11 gigs/hr.

4 gigs ram on a laptop? Dealing with 25 gigs/hr video?

Think of quality video production like an equilateral triangle. The three systems are camera, computer, software. No one leg is more or less important than the others, it invites disappointment to spend for a camera, without upgrades to both the computer and software. Yes, you can leave a couple legs short and it will work. You can edit RED footage with free software on an off-the-shelf Dell from Best-Buy. But the sooner you match the camera, the happier you will be.

(And this analogy does not fall off much right through the top-end $100,000 cameras although software does flatten out by around $20,000)

How would i record 3 different video cameras onto my pc at the same time?

Stephen Ha

To be able to record from 3 sources, ie video cams, how would i go about recording them simultaniously?

I presume i need a video suite to begin with. live windows movie maker or other but will such programs permit multiple devices to recpord at the same time for different camera angles of the same shot?

Answer
Hi again, Stephen:

From your Y!A Question yesterday about split-screen & PIP, you have an interest in multi-camera multi-angle shoots like in the Jared Falk drumming tutorials you referenced in that discussion: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AqnF6ZXueWqGYNdPHOi5rnLsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20130118061726AAoFj3m

For most projects like this, since recording to tape or memory inside each camera is relatively cheap (compared to the old days of film or large studio TV cameras), each shot is stored without using a computer (recording more than one camera at the same time is a very large workload on a PC!) and then combined (edited) later.

To make sure all the different footage lines-up (called "sync" for synchronization), a clapperboard or "slate" is held up where all the cameras can "see" it. (This is why you've seen movie set scenes or blooper-reels with someone calling out "Scene Two, Take One" and "Scene Two, Take Two" etc., then clapping the hinged stick at the top of the slate loudly.)

The visual slate makes sure all the right Scenes & Takes (versions of same scene) match each other , and the loud clack of the clapsticks makes sure the audio matches frame-for-frame (the visual closing of the sticks marks where the short clack sound should be).

This method has been used for sound movies ever since they were invented back in the 1920's. There are more-modern "electronic slate" & Time-Code methods using LEDs and short "beeps" for sync.

Low-budget productions (or in-a-hurry shots) often use the "hand-clap" method. An actor or other person in the shot holds their arms out to one side, widely apart, and then claps them together to make a sync-point. They can also call out the shot & take info, as well as hold up a sheet of paper or card with the slate info for the editor.

Another reason slates & sync are important is for "double-system sound". For music videos and projects like Jared Falk's drumming demos good sound is essential, so a separate audio recording system (usually digital now, but analog tape is still used) along with one or more microphones captures the sound better than any of the cameras could. This allows you to use cheaper cameras that don't have external mike connections.

The other recording method I briefly covered in our other Y!A discussion mentioned multiple cameras & a video mixer. This is the typical TV studio method, and used to be a necessity before camcorders were invented (and later became cheaper than studio cameras). In this, a video director makes live decisions which camera to choose from or, in the case of split-screen & PIP, which cameras will appear where on the screen. The video mixer sends the single choice or mixed image to a separate video recorder or tape machine for storage. Titles & special effects can be added live or later on during editing.

When it comes to webcams (whose video stream doesn't take up as much storage space compared to regular HD cameras), there are software programs like MultiCam which can handle more than one webcam at a time. You still need a good, fast PC & hard drives to record all this at once, and in most cases someone needs to act as "director" to make switching decisions.

As far as Windows Movie Maker, it's a basic A/B timeline editor (switching back & forth between only two cameras or clips at a time, and no PIP or split-screen effects). It can edit video clips from more than two cameras (although not "live" video), but it can't run more than one video track at a time, which makes multi-camera edits hard to sync & keep track of.

There are better editors (even for under-$100 USD) that allow multiple video tracks & the simultaneous shot effects you are looking for. AVID's Pinnacle Studio is a popular edit package in this price range ($50-$99 depending on version & where you shop). NCH Software's VideoPad is a free download and has similar multi-track features and PIP effects.

I'll add some links in my Sources below, for more info. (You appear to be in the UK, so let me know if you need UK software links.)

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.
