I will be setting up a small studio with green screen and need to buy a high def camcorder. What I need is bang for my buck and good Video quality with a good lens. Big and bulky is not a problem.

Also with the ability to accept an external mic input.

One thing with making a good chroma-key is the necessity to have as little compression as possible. Stepping up from HDV into higher-quality HD formats such as Panasonic's P2 and Sony's XDCam might be something to consider. Once you get into that price range, mic inputs are just automatically part of the package.

Lighting, of course, is also incredibly important - have to get that green to be as consistent as possible.

Of course, the concern here is budget. Not sure what your range is.

Best MiniDV Camcorder with Mic Input Jack?

It seems really hard to find something current that has a microphone input. We are using this for interviews, so the sound quality is important and having a mic input seems to be the best way to cover this base.

Any gain to the quality of the interview provided by the ext mic will be lost if you use an on-camera light and electronic IS. A light on the camera is bad for two reasons. first it will give the interviewee the "deer in the headlights" look, not very complimentary. Second it will draw so much power off the battery that it will limit your shooting time between battery charges to a few minutes. Get a plug in floor lamp from Wal-mart or a campers lantern if you are mobile. The way to stabilize the camera is with a tripod, then you can walk away from the camera and be able to hold that ext mic you feel is so important. Unless you are interviewing professional media types, they won't be comfortable holding a mic.

I think the 70 series battery I bought for this unit weighs almost as much as the camera. The controls are good with the little screen joystick and menus. The color is very good on the screen, and the video is sharp. I like the 30x for videoing my stepsons' wrestling matches.

right. top of line cameras always sell at a premium price. once a better model is available, that premium drops to a more commonplace price. however retailers do not drop prices until they have the new wonder model in stock, to do otherwise would reduce sales volume. some announced products never make it to the store (vaporware) or produced in such small quantity as to not change retail pricing structure. not all retailers drop prices, they may have a distribution deal with the manufacture to return older models from inventory. so bargain models are never on the shelf for you to buy. they become "factory refurbished" items for eventual sale as obsolete models.

Cheap chinese junk is suitable only for mp3 players

High quality is for stuff like mpeg camcorders or high megapixel cameras.

I only use sandisk, the quality is there. PNY is ok, but it's expensive.

Unless you have some crazy camera, forget about the speed ratings.

I did some researched and talked to a few people who recently purchased a camcorder and I'm still very fuzzy. Does anyone have any suggestions? Specific brand and model? Maybe, a general rule of thumb or ruleS of thumb for purchasing a GOOD quality camcorder.

Apple MacBook Pro by far! The MacBook Pro has been updated with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, along with more RAM and hard drive storage. I have the top-of-the-line 17-inch model, a thing of beauty clad in sleek aluminum.

Still only one-inch thin, the MacBook Pro also remains one of the lightest notebooks and it does come with a 15.4-inch widescreen display. This 5.6-pound notebook is excellent for home or office use but is portable and compact enough to take on the road.

Using the MacBook Pro is a pleasure, and it didnât take me too long to fall in love with the 17 inch screen, whose optional glossy treatment is perfect for watching movies. The notebook comes with an infrared, six-button remote, so you can enjoy movies from across the room.

I like the MagSafe Power Adapter, which disconnects from the notebook if you trip over the cord. For this model, Apple added the MagSafe Airline Adapter, which uses the same concept but connects to an in-seat power port (a $59 option, not included). The MacBook Proâs illuminated keyboard and motion-sensor technology for protecting the hard drive help make this a solid pick for business travelers.

The big improvement is the upgrade from Intelâs 2.16-GHz Core Duo processor to a 2.33-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Like the previous CPU, the Core 2 Duo has two processing cores, but now each chip has 4MB of shared L2 cache. That cache allows the Core 2 Duo to store more data nearby so that it makes fewer passes to the main memory.

Speaking of memory, Appleâs computers have long been RAM weaklings, with standard configurations that paled next to their Windows counterparts, but Apple corrected that nicely. The 2.33-GHz 15-inch MacBook Pro comes with 2GB of 667-MHz DDR2 SDRAM standard, twice that of the previous version. I maxed out the system with 3GB of RAM, for an extra $575. Thatâs overkill for all but the most demanding power users like myself - I run my home network from it.

I downloaded the free Mac BootCamp, which enables Macs to run Windows XP. http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/

Productivity performance was decent. I suspect this may be due to the fact that Windows uses only a small partition of the MacBook Proâs hard drive (although you can set it to use more) and that Boot Camp itself has some performance overhead. BEWARE that using this now opens the MAC to the same malware attacks as the PC'ers are experiencing.

I ran MobileMark to test the battery life, the MacBook Proâs battery lasted 2 hours and 53 minutes with Wi-Fi off, compared with the average runtime of 3:41 for mainstream notebooks. I also ran a DVD rundown test and got 2 hours and 58 minutes with Wi-Fi on (compared with 3 hours and 5 minutes on the13.3-inch MacBook). Thatâs a decent runtime considering the larger size of this display, but the bottom line is that you should go with the slower (and cheaper) 2.16-GHz processor if you want more endurance.

Wireless antenna strength is supposed to no longer be a problem with Appleâs high-end notebooks, but I noticed a weaker signal with this MacBook Pro than with one of my other Mac's desktop in the same location. Compared with my Toshiba notebook, the MacBook Pro wasnât too far off with scores of 12.6 Mbps at 15 feet and 9.6 at 50 feet.

How do I download video from my camcorder hard drive to my computer?

I have a JVC everio with a hard drive. We've never been able to download anything to a computer. The instruction manual is completely unhelpful in this area. We were doing it on a DVD player/burner with our TV but that has now died. We need to get the video off badly. Can you please help? I'd be glad to add more info if it's needed. Also, layman's terms please. This is definitely not my area. Thanks.

I have a similar camera. There should be something in the settings about what to do when your cam is connected by USB. You want it to act like a hard drive. Then you should get a pop up window when you plug the camera cable into your computer (like when you plug in a thumb drive) and you will see something like "DCIM" or "JVC1000" or whatever as a folder name. Just browse around and you should find your video and then drag it (or everyting) over to your desktop and you will be fine.

Just to be clear - the Sony DCR-SR47 is an entry level, consumer grade, internal hard drive based camcorder. It is nowhere near "best".

Personally, I do not recommend internal hard drive based camcorders because of their known problems with vibration, loud audio, and high altitude... they can stop recording under these conditions. Flash memory and miniDV tape do not sffer from these problems. As well, HDD camcorders can be VERY challenging when the camcorder breaks and the video has not already been transferred to a computer. The removable media used by miniDV tape and flash memory can be used by other camcorders so access to the video is easier after camcorder failure.

The video file formats are the same when comparing HDD and flash memory - assuming the lenses and imaging chips are the same, the video quality from these camcorders is the same. The only difference is the storage media. Standard definition DV (used by miniDV tape based camcorders) is much less compressed and results in better video quality - again, assuming the lenses and imaging chips are the same size as the "equivalent" HDD and flash memory camcorders... MiniDV tape based camcorders require your computer to have a firewire port. HDD and flash memory camcorders use USB to copy the files - but many times those files need to be converted using a utility like MPEG StreamClip before a video editor can deal with it.

I strongly suggest you stay with miniDV tape (Sony DCR-HC62, Panasonic PV-GS320, Canon ZR960) or flash memory (Canon FS100) and skip hard disc drive camcorders. The ZR960 and FS100 have a mic jack (but no manual audio control) that other camcorders in this class do not have.

-I'm looking for an affordable video camera. And I'm imagining one of those $2000 ones but I guess that's too.. way out of my league at the moment. I can't really see myself making a video with a itty bitty camcorder.

I was looking for a "good" camcorder that was reasonably priced and easy to use. I read many, many reviews and compared several different makes of camcorders. I kept leaning towards the Canon FS100 camcorder. I was told that the video quality of the Canon FS100 was better than the competitors when it was being shown on a widescreen television. But the reviews really confused me because there were reviews that went from 5 stars down to one. The higher reviews said the camera had great video quality, while the 1 & 2 star reviews said the video quality was terrible. Video quality was probably the most important feature I wanted in a camera, so which was it, really good or really bad. The only way to find out was to try one myself. So I ordered one from Amazon.com, because their return policy is excellent. If I didn't like it for any reason, I would just return it. When I received the camcorder, I charged the battery and started using it immediately. I think it is very easy to use, and the "video" quality was excellent on my widescreen TV. I was thrilled. When shooting in extreme low light situations, the video is grainy, but acceptable for me. I really don't plan on shooting in the dark with the mini video light on the camera. Regular indoor video with existing lamp light, was still excellent quality. BUT, if you are wanting to use the camcorder for still pictures, don't. The still picture quality is pretty bad. Now, about the packaged software that comes with the camcorder. I didn't like it. The camcorder saves the video in .MOD format, which MAKES you use the Canon software. So for you beginner and intermediate users, my suggestion is to download "SDCOPY" from the internet to your computer. The "SDCOPY" will convert the .MOD files to .MPEG files. Then, you will be able to use different software programs. I am using Windows Vista on my computer, so I use the Windows Movie Maker program that comes on Vista to burn my video onto DVDs. So I didn't have to buy any additional software. I am not shooting video for "professional" reasons. I just want my memories recorded onto DVDs so I can watch them in years to come. So for those of you that may be looking for a really good camcorder at a great price (under $500 at Amazon), and one that is easy to use, then I recommend the Canon FS100. How can you go wrong at that price and receive great videos? I absolutely love mine.

Software is easy: Avid is what the big boys generally use. A close second and also used by professional editors is Adobe Premier as part of the larger Production premium pack, or the ultimate pack. If you are a student (HS or College) then Adobe is a great choice because of their huge 80% discount for students and teachers.

The camera depends on the type of work you are doing, intended audience, locations, etc.
Do not even bother with consumer HD cameras, learn about the different formats and you will see this is an evolutionary step backward in quality.

Ideally, you would get a HDV camera like the Canon XH A1S ($4000) at a start.

If you can not afford the XH, then right square between the consumer HD and Pro HDV is good-old standard def MiniDv Pro-sumer cameras like the Canon XL and GL series. The GL-2 is still available new for about $2500. Both are frequently on e-Bay with the XL going just under $1000 and the GL-1 and GL-2 going for $500 and $800 respectively.

When you get to where your time is valuable, you will also want a purpose built computer for editing. HDV is here and it does not require a huge upgrade form standard def, but plan on $2000 if you can build it yourself.

I've been editing video on Macs for many years.

Any camcorder with a DV/IEEE1394/DV/i.link/firewire camcorder works fine.

Any camcorder with a USB port that records very compressed AVCHD files to flash memory or hard disc drive (I've imported video from various Canon HS R, HF M and HF S series camcorder, Panasonic consumer AVCHD camcorders, Sony consumer AVCHD camcorders, JVC consumer camcorders and others).

I also have a Canon PowerShot AS3300is that provides video and stills into my Macs just fine.

Final Cut and some plug-ins are needed for higher end camcorders - like the Panasonics that record to DVCPro or DVCPro HD format; Sony Camcorders that recorder DVCAM, HDCAM and XDCAM format; and the Canons that record MXF files.

GoPro cams are fine. Basically, I have not yet encountered any camera that I could not get the video into my Macs for editing. Maybe a transcoder is needed. Having MPEG Streamclip from www.squared5.com and HandBrake from www.handbrake.fr takes care of that...

I take that back... the crappy DVD based camcorders that have not been made for several years were a pain because the slot loading DVD drives cannot deal with the small 8sm discs - so I got an inexpensive external LaCie drawer loading drive... but other than that...

The only thing I have found that is "not compatible with Macs" is the useless software that comes in the box. Since it is useless, it is irrelevant.

But if "not being compatible" is a problem, find the article you read and get a list from the author. Then stay away from those.
