what are good slow motion camcorders?

eric g

hi, i need a slow motion camcorder that can get things really slow. like 120 frames per second or something like that.

i need one that isnt too expensive. my price range is like 100-600 dollars.

alright thanks.

Answer
The only consumer camcorders even close to the price range you specify - of which I am aware - that will increase frame rate (so normal playback is slow) are the Sony camcorders that have the "Smooth Slow Record" feature - but they only burst "Smooth Slow Record".

The HDR-HC9 and HDR-SR5 each will burst for 3 seconds recording at 240fps resulting in a 12 second play-back.

There may be others. Sony makes the only consumer camcorders with this feature.

I am planning to buy a camcorder for a website that I run. I will be doing various things with it, so it should be able to perform in various lightings.

The main thing that I am looking for in it though is computer compatibility. I will be hosting the videos I create on a website, and won't be using it for 'Home Video' use. So USB or Firewire or HDD are highly preferable.

Price range should be below $500, so any helpful tips on what to buy?

Answer
Recommend that you visit the cnet site. It has reviews of all the models, identifies which are the top sellers and provides a decent comparison between different makes and models. Based upon your budget apetite, you can narrow down the search too at this site.

How do professional cameramen film in low light so well?

Teh Tarik

I've just bought a Kogan video camera (new Australian brand, not well known) that from my limited experience of camcorders is somewhere in the middle of the video camera spectrum (definitely not lousy, but nothing special either) and I"ve tried several times filming in a dark room with Night mode with very poor results. I can't actually tell the difference between normal and Night mode.

Do you have experience with video cameras that film well in low light? I made a bit of money recently and considering doing a trade-in somewhere.

Answer
Hi Steph:

Let's boil down this whole discussion into two things:
1) Your AU$399 (~USD$425) Kogan camcorder (which tells us your original budget range). That's no where near the "middle" of the $50 - $100,000 USD video camera spectrum.
2) The phrase "how do professional cameramen film... so well?"

It all boils down to spending good money for good equipment. The professional camera crews use equipment that costs thousands more than what you have now, plus --if you are not talking just InfraRed shooting in total or near-total darkness-- their cameras have multiple gain-boost settings for low light.

If you are trying to compare home camcorder footage of any kind with professional broadcast TV shows, just stop it. Their gear is way more advanced, plus (as others have mentioned) they also have post-production signal processors to help boost image parameters and quality.

The pro's also have access to "image intensifiers" they mount between their lens and camcorder (or on the front lens in cheaper cameras), like the AstroScope, which for around $6,000 USD will work for even a consumer camcorder or SLR. These can create an image using only starlight from the sky.

Your Kogan brand is not highly rated in picture quality to start with (see CNet Australia's review: http://www.cnet.com.au/kogan-full-hd-1080p-video-camcorder-camera-339293191.htm ). If you happen to have a more-expensive Kogan model, I apologize, but not much. A not-well-known brand that's in Australian K-Marts says a lot in itself. If you do trade-up, go for a name brand that's done this for awhile & has a track record for image quality as well as construction quality.

If you really have an interest in "Ghost Hunters" style IR shooting and not just poorly-lit parties, get a good used Sony Handycam that has true Sony "NightShot" features (the older consumer NightShot models could also "see" through certain garments, so Sony crippled newer Handycams' IR features).

The professional IR camera crews also use "bright" (but invisible to the eye) InfraRed spotlights mounted on the camera tops.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

How can you tell if a website is collecting info about you?

Tommy

I got an email from my isp saying I violated some kind of copyright law. That got me wondering. Is there anyway to know whether a site I visit collects my ip address or any other kind of identifying information?

Lets say I go to a site on camcorders, can the site collect my info and then sell it to marketing people? Can I expect to get regular mail from Sony, Canon, and others on their new products?

Answer
There is not really a way to see if sites are collecting your information as it happens, but the best you can do is try to prevent it from happening in the first place. Normally you have to consent to things like that in some way. Look for the fine print on any web page you visit. If it says they can and/or will sell or give your information to a third party, leave the site. Most sites, however, will have a box that you check that will say something to the effect of "Yes! I would like to receive notices from Canon and its affiliates regarding new products and special offers in my e-mail!" and another one that says "I do not wish to receive e-mails from Canon and its affiliates." In that situation, you would obviously click "No" because clicking "Yes" would allow Canon to share your information with it's "affiliates." Disabling cookies in your browser will help as well.

more specifically a bell and howard. how good is it if i want to film a youtube series

Answer
Hi Ryan:

Like anything online or with computers, you need to be accurate (spell things right) with your Question in order to get an accurate Answer. But, I understood what you meant.

You are talking about a "Bell & Howell" brand camcorder. Bell & Howell used to be a well-respected movie camera & film projector brand for over 100 years. (My first home-movie camera & projector was a Bell & Howell 8mm color setup, and the first professional motion picture camera I was trained on (shooting 16mm football sports films) was a Bell & Howell with motor-drive & 400-foot film magazine.)

In 2011, a company called Vista Capital bought the rights to the B&H brand name, and now Bluestar Alliance licenses the brand to various product manufacturers who have no connection to the original company.

From my personal experience, and from reading reviews of the latest "Bell & Howell" branded camcorder imports, the features and quality are not very good.

Even though the name "Bell & Howell" used to represent good-quality movie cameras, no self-respecting professional or competent amateur would be caught using a current Bell & Howell model.

If you'll look at Bluestar Alliance's website (http://www.bluestarbrands.com/ ) you'll notice how many "Text To Be Added" or "under-construction" pages are in the menu links. That doesn't build confidence in the parent company nor the brands it represents.

hope this helps,

I have around $3000 to spend solely on camera equipment. Which lens should I get?

Derec

Most** things I shoot for are for videos. I really love making short films and I just got an increase in budget. Anyway, I wanna know what lens I can get for this. Of course, I really don't wanna spend more than $1500 on lenses. I was told that prime lenses were the best options but I'm still unsure. I was reviewing the canon 85mm f1.8 as a choice and it seems very nice but, idk if I should spend the extra money and go for a 85mm f1.2. It's a hard decision as the second lens gives much better quality. But then there's the other side in which I could get more than one lens if I buy the f1.8. Right now I own a canon 6d and have the 50mm f1.4 lens. I had more but I sold them for personal reasons.
Please help!!

Answer
Here's an APS-C digital camcorder with an interchangeable lens system.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/890796-REG/Sony_NEX_VG30_Camcorder_Body_Only.html

The extra money can be used to shop for NEX lenses. Prime lenses are fast and can be used in low light. Zoom lenses are more versatile without moving out of place. I suggest you get a mix of both.

Do you like fujifilm cameras?

Q. im planning on buying the Fujifilm FinePix S2950 digital camera. But i wanted to know what do you think about fujifilm camera? I need to know i dont wanna end up buying a bad camera...please help

Answer
Hi Sara, and welcome to Y!A Camcorders:

Fuji doesn't really make any true camcorders, so normally this Question would be better posted over in the Y!A "Cameras" category. But at least this model FinePix has a decent zoom lens (18x optical) and shoots 720p HD video clips, in addition to 14Megapixel stills.

One step up from a basic "point & shoot" camera, this model is what is called a "bridge camera" (more features than just snapshot cameras, but not quite an SLR-style camera). The lens may have a long-zoom range compared to most cameras in its price class ($150-$200), but it's also not a very "fast" lens (wide-open it only has F3.1 to F5.6, depending on wide-angle or zoomed-in) so it's not very good in low-light situations. So if you shoot video with it (where the flash is useless) indoor results might be disappointing.

Fuji is a good brand name (they're the "Japanese Kodak" when it comes to camera film & processing) and âlike Kodakâ they've made cameras for years. They're just not one of the first brand names professionals and skilled amateurs think of when shopping for equipment.

CNet reviews gave this model 3-out-of-5 stars ("Good"), but pointed out the low-light and other shooting performance issues: see http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/fujifilm-finepix-s2950/4505-6501_7-34468871.html

Here's a Digital Photography Reviews article that's more of a copy of Fuji's press release than a review, but it covers all the features and specifications: http://www.dpreview.com/news/2011/1/5/fujifilms2950

Decide what kind of photos and videos are important to you, and if having a long lens isn't that important, you might search around for a better camera or camcorder in the same price range. But if you found that this model handles your style of shooting, and the price is right, go for it.

Just keep in mind that "cameras" are mainly designed for stills, and "camcorders" have features that make it easier for shooting videos.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

*Meg*

Our families live in different states, and use facebook to keep in touch with us on a daily basis. I want to find a cute unique way to announce your baby's gender on facebook. I find out on friday and I don't just want to blirt out "its a..."

Answer
Well, I suggest that you bring a camcorder along with you to the ultrasound and record every minute of it. When it comes time to reveal the sex (make sure you coordinate this with the technician) zoom in real close and have the technician type out the sex of the baby on the screen. You can post this video on Youtube and put a link to it on your facebook and email it to all of your friends. You can also edit the video when you are getting ready to post it and put in pink frilly designs or blue designs or just leave it a Christmas scene until you get to the part that says what your having.

It will be real exciting and I think your family would really enjoy being able to see the ultrasound. It will be a special experience for you and your significant other in the doctor's office and your family will be able to have that same experience without actually having to be there.

They will also see the heartbeat and maybe get to see the baby sucking its thumb or moving all around!

Good luck and congratulations. Hope you get what you *want*

Which camcorder is better canon or Sony?

KB

I want to buy a HD camcorder for home use. I found canon HF R20 in a store near me on sale for 282$, online price is around 400$, but it's an older model which is discontinued by canon and some stores still have it. I also found Sony HDRCX 190 which is around 270-300$. When I read their description they look the same to me. Is the difference in price because canon is a better brand? Is canon for 282$ a steal or is better to go with a newer Sony?

Answer
Hi Ms.Z:

I don't know where online you've been looking, but almost everywhere I've looked, the Canon HF-R20 is selling around that same $280 price (Canon USA currently sells it on its website for $349).

[They also sell the HF20 factory-refurbished in either Silver, Black, or Red for $249 at Canon Direct: http://shop.usa.canon.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10051_10051_302514_-1 ].

Walmart & Target currently sell the Sony CX190 for $269.

I own both Sony & Canon camcorders, and both are very good brands. (Sony makes more models that are used by TV stations & networks than Canon, but Canon makes more pro-TV lenses.)

Personally, I don't think either one is that great, although you get 8Gb of internal memory with the Canon model (none in the Sony) and the Canon will hold 2 SD cards at the same time (just one with the Sony). The Sony has a longer optical zoom-factor (25x compared to Canon's 20x). But you should read a couple of reviews for each model and make your own decision:

CNet Review (May 2012) for the Sony CX190: http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-camcorders/sony-handycam-hdr-cx190/4505-6500_7-35128679.html (They didn't like the image quality, for the money. And they thought it felt "flimsy".)

CNet review {January 2011) for the Canon HF20: http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-camcorders/canon-vixia-hf-r20/4505-6500_7-34468433.html

What are the different types of camcorders called? Are there different types? The lighting, zooms look totally different in TV, films, and personal home videos. What other differences are there? How do you create home videos that look like films or even tv shows. Also, how can you capture photos that look professional? I don't know anything about photography and filming.

Answer
I don't think there is enough room or time to tell you. If you want to find out about this type of media then you need to go to your local library and read read, and read more, that will give you an idea, then a few years in collage, then training in your chosen field, once you have done all that, then you start to learn how to do it. if you ask anyone in media they will tell you that you never stop learning. think how much films/TV and video have changes over the last few years.

there are sites that will give you a very basic idea on how to achieve some of the effects you are asking about,

try www.videohelp.com

you will be surprised who gives advice there.

Good luck

How come when you move your camcorder away from light, it creates a "smear" effect on the footage?

Jean Miche

Like for instance, I was watching some old Jean Michel Jarre and some old Queen concerts, and every time the camera moved away from the lights (say stage lights, or a reflection), it would give a temporary "smear" effect on the lens before it goes away. Why does it do this? Because of the quality of what they had at the time?
