A video-camera/camcorder under 500 dollars with best video quality possible?

I recently made a short film with my friends just using a digital camera that had a video capablities. Now i realized how much fun filming is and I want to do more. Now i just don't know what kind of video camera to get. I have a budget of up to 500 dollars and i want something that has really good quality(I know I might be asking for too much), has a large storage, and can be used with a tripod. I want to be able to edit my videos, but they won't be professional just for personal self-satisfaction. Really appreciate it.

Answer
Consumer level HD camcorders have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer level HD camcorders all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video. Not to mention, but the computer you upload your HD files to has to have at least a 1 GB video card and a separate Audio card that can support Direct X® 9 technology. Your normal every day computer has massive troubles with HD video. Consumer level HD camcorders interpolate the video. This means they take one frame, make up the next 4 or 5 frames, take a frame and repeat this, over and over, for the remainder of the video, every video it takes is like this. With a MiniDV tape camcorder, record 60 or 90 minutes ( camcorder settings), 90 seconds or less to change a tape and record for 60 or 90 more and repeat till you run out of tapes.

You can get a Canon ZR960 for $250. It is a MiniDV tape camcorder, has a MIC jack. You will need a Firewire (IEEE1394) card ($25 to 30) for the computer and a Firewire cable (less than 10) to be able to transfer video to your computer. To say this is not HD, think about this. It would cost in excess of $3500 to get a HD camcorder that could equal the video Quality of a $250 Canon MiniDV tape camcorder.

What are the top 2011 HD camcorders under $500?

Answer
The top HD camcorders for under $500 are all JUNK. It would take you in excess of $3500 to get a HD camcorder that could even compete withe video Quality of a $300 MiniDV tape camcorder.

consumer level HD camcorders have 3 issues. 1) Fuzzy, blurry, out of focus areas around people in the HD video. 2) Any movement in front of a recording HD camcorder shows up in the finished video with screen ghosts and artifacts following the movement, ruining the video. 3) Lack of record times. 1 hour, go home, no way to change storage or continue shooting. Some offer a whole whopping 30 minutes. What, record 1/3 of the event then put the camcorder away or leave.

You can get the Canon ZR960 for $250 or the ZR930 for about $300. Both of these camcorders are MiniDV tape based. Both camcorders have a Mic jack. Both of these camcorder can take better quality video and audio than any sub $3000 camcorder.

Questions About Camcorders !?

Leelee

I'm about to get a camcorder! But the thing is, I don't know which one to get !

I like camcorders like the sanyo xacti vpc cg100.

And these . . http://www.sears.com/dxg-digital-camcorder-with-built-in-5mp-digital/p-00317188000P?prdNo=4&blockNo=29&blockType=G29

And this ! http://www.sears.com/dxg-luxe-green-glitter-polka-dots-luxe-1080p/p-00320423000P?prdNo=15&blockNo=40&blockType=G40

And camcorders like that. I was wondering if you can pause. Like, if you're recording and you pause it. Then you 'unpause" it (forgot the word xD) and continue recording .

By any chance do you see any reviews on these type of camcorders? Or any items similar to it?

Answer
Nope, no camcorder sold has a "PAUSE' button on it. Reason being, using a PAUSE button on a camcorder will damage the recording media and the internal electronics of the camcorder. That is why they created the Non Linear Editing (NLE) video editing program. You shoot a clip, shut of the recording, restart it when needed, doing this several times in a day. Take all the footage back to your computer, open your NLE, place the various clips on timeline in a order that you want or need to, then make File or if your program can, a DVD.

Any camcorder you should get, if you want to shoot better videos, should have a MIC port and the ability to shut off any Easy or Auto functions and go totally Manual. Learn how to focus and set exposure and you will be making better videos.

My choice, if I wanted the best video quality, would be a camcorder that is using MiniDV tape for video storage. I say that because all Consumer level HD camcorders, using any other form of media storage, interpolate the video. In short, what that means is - If you had a video made with one of these HD camcorders, with 1000 frames in the video, 800 of those frames would not be from the lens. They would be made by the internal electronic circuitry with in the camcorder, using an algorithm based on the frames from the lens, before and after these made up frames. A nightmare to edit, this HD video is. And not mention the upgrades or total replacement of your computer that is needed to edit HD video.

Good cheap camcorder?

Q. I need a good camcorder. Needs HD but SD is fine, good mic quality and an option to use my own mic, tripod compatible and under 100 if possible. Thanks.

What is the best brand for digital camcorders? JVC? SAMSUNG? ETC?

Answer
For years, I've done just fine by JVC, Canon, Sony, and Panasonic. I currently use a Panasonic camcorder (PV-GS65) at home, and have recommended a Panasonic professional camcorder (AG-HVX200) for a university TV organization, and we've been happy with both. Those cameras were selected for having the features we needed at the best price available. I'm not necessarily saying "go with Panasonic." There are other great brands out there, and any one of them is good if it meets your needs. It all depends on what you need to do with your camcorder.

Look at reviews and specifications. What do you want to do with your camcorder? Do you want to try editing, or do you simply want the easiest way to show video to your family? Do you plan on doing a lot of night shooting, or is spectacular performance in good light enough for you? Do you want a variety of manual control options? Where do you plan on using the camcorder? Do you plan on using an external microphone with your camcorder?

In short, find out exactly what you plan to use it for, and find out which one best meets your needs. The major brands have all been doing this for a long time, and all have a tendency to put out quality products.

What is the best Digital Video Camera on the market right now?

Swiss Rugg

I am not a professional, I just want to get the best machine for vieoing my kids growing up etc...

Answer
What is your budget?

All miniDV camcorders use firewire to transfer video (from the DV port on the camcorder to the firewire port on your computer). MiniDV tape will provide you the best available video quality.

Pricing camcorders is odd... there are lots of choices from about $300 to $500 for standard definition (DV) palmcorder-handycam types. Like the Canon ZR family and the Sony DCR family.

Then there is a jump to around $700-$800. The Canon HV20, HV30, Sony HDR-HC7 and HC9 do both standard definition (DV) and high definition (HDV) and have external mic jacks and have full manual audio control...

Then there is a jump to $2000 and more...

I am looking to purchase a reasonable camcorder. Mostly want to use for taking videos of kids at school dances, etc.

I want something that has good optical zoom, but not sure of what zoom that will not distort the picture. I usually have to videotape from about 50 to 60 ft. away and I want something that when I play it back on tv that will show a good video.

What should I be looking for when buying one?

Answer
Unless you are going to use a tripod then don't bother with very high zooms. 16-20X no more. forget the digital zoom as they greatly reduce the quality.

To be honest go for Mini-dv. It has the best quality, easy to out onto your computer to edit if you want, or just plug into your TV.

High definition, if you want to streatch the budget a little, all the Main makers produce them at both ends of the market.

Mini-dv can be captered to any computer, PC/Mac and all editing packages will work with it.

Will this mic work for my camcorder?

Cindy S

I'm not very tech savvy, so could someone *please* help me out here. I'd so very much appreciate it.

I currently own a Canon ZR600 and am looking into buying a mic for it, as the built-in mic sucks. I'm going to want a cable hook up for it, which is hard to find, but I came across this little website (http://www.suntekstore.com/14-37-inch-professional-shotgun-microphone-for-canon-camcorder.html) and would really like to know if this would work for my Canon ZR600. It doesn't specify if it's for ANY camcorder of their brand, or just the top professional ones, which has left me confused.

Answer
No, because the camcorder doesn't have a microphone input.

Is there any camcorder with interchangeable Lens under 1K?

jonathan

possibly c-mout?

Answer
Kind of!

C-Mount cameras are mostly used in cheap-moderately priced CCD cameras for security systems. Problem is these rely on external recorders.

This system actually has some advantages. The cameras can be very small and mounted remotely to the recorder. I have used this system on Kayaks, Skis, and for numerous vehicles for external shots.

Good cameras are in the $300 range. And good card based, battery operated, pocket sized DVRs start at about $300. Take a look here for some ideas:

Cheap dSLR or top knotch bridge / hybrid ?

Kaninho

I am a international tourism student, and I travel a lot. I want a all round camera that delivers me lively pictures.

I heard some people talking that the cheapest dSLR camera's takes "better" pictures than the best bridge/hybrid camera. I am leaning towards the Panasonic Lumix FZ35/FZ38 or the newer model which will be availabe in 2 weeks, or should I buy a 8 year old dSLR camera for that money ? I am really liking the Lumix FZ35/FZ38 and I have seen really impressing pictures taken with that camera, and the HD camcorder is also a plus, but on the other hand, the old dSLR will still have a bigger sensor, which will lead to quality images. The 2009/2010 Lumix FZ35/FZ38 & FZ45(newest model) will all have the newest technological features, which will be handy I guess compared to the old dSLR. Will the technological improvements in 8 years make up for the lacking sensor in the hybrid / bridge camera?

Will this be visually noticable in a standard photo format?

And yes I know, like the old saying goes, "Fear not the weapon but the hand that wields it."

So I am thinking about the lumix FZ35/FZ38 , or the newer model, or a 2002 model dSLR...

Is it possible to download a Power Point presentation to You Tube?

carmen

I'm doing a pp project and just want to have a video of it, is this possible with Power Point 2010?

Answer
Yes it is possible to do it but you have to use windows movie maker just follow the steps bellow

You have created a terrific PowerPoint presentation. Now you want to show and share the genius piece on the top video hosting site YouTube. The problem is, YouTube, a tremendous reservoir of videos, only accepts videos or video clips from digital cameras, camcorders and cell phones that are in such format as WMV, AVI, MOV and MPEG, while neither PowerPoint presentations are video files nor Microsoft itself supports such a PPT-to-YouTube conversion. Hence you may fail when you are to upload a PowerPoint file onto YouTube.

How to troubleshoot the issue? Here I am to show you two easy ways to put PowerPoint presentations onto YouTube.

Method 1 Use Windows Movie Maker
You can use Windows Movie Maker included in your Windows machine. The application is helpful to make a beautiful slideshow or video clip (e.g. mixing your songs with pictures, video clips, lyrics and etc). Then you can save it as video file with the extension of .wmv.

Or just get the clips you want, save and convert them, then mix/match them with pix/sound/etc using Windows movie maker to create new masterpieces. When the output video comes out, upload and put the video presentation to YouTube.

Method 2 Use Third-Party software to convert PowerPoint to YouTube-Ready Video
You can google for a sound PowerPoint-to-YouTube-video converter. Or simply take our Leawo PowerPoint to Video, which is right to help you convert a PowerPoint presentation to a stunning Flash video welcome by YouTube. What's more, it works without any loss of sounds, movies, animations or transitions from the original PowerPoint. The output video from the conversion software always retains all the subtitles of your source presentation.

In three simple clicks, you will access your PowerPoint presentation in video of MPEG, AVI, MP4, WMV, MOV and 3GP with excellent quality.
Exact Steps of Converting PowerPoint files to Youtube video:
1. Install and run Leawo PowerPoint to Video
2. Click Import to input a PowerPoint presentation you want to convert.
3. Set the output format if necessary and click the Start button to start converting PowerPoint presentations to YouTube video.
No more than a few seconds, you can get your PowerPoint presentation in vivid video that is easy to put onto YouTube.

What would be the best camcorder for YouTube videos?

Austin

I think this summer I'm going to start making YouTube videos and I was wondering which one is the best (in your opinion). Money is not an option.

BQ: If you know please answer: what kind of camera does Chris Crocker use? (leave britney alone dude)
THANK YOU

Answer
sony camera or camcorder has always been known to give good production of snap and video capturing..

--for best editing....

use windows movie maker (included in your windows machine)... it can help you make beautiful slideshow or video clip(e.g. mixing your songs with pictures/video/lyric/etc).... then save it as video file such as wmv file format... finally upload.

or .. Just get those clips you want , save & convert them, and then mix/match with pix/sound/etc using windows movie maker to create new masterpieces....

this will help you.... Use 'zillatube'. This is the easiest (and also the fastest) way.

Zillatube produces mpg/mp3 formats from youtube that are compatible with windows movie maker(or media player), and more.

It is very easy to download and convert videos. Then edit those converted mp3/mpg videos with windows movie maker... save your file as wmv and then upload.

It works very well....just google search for "zillatube", and select the first search result for download...

cheapest hd pocket camcorder for youtube videos?

kristina

I need a pocket camcorder for recording youtube song covers. I was considering something like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/JVC-PICSIO-GC-FM2-Full-HD-1920x1080-Digital-Camcorder-Camera-Blue-/290888796308?pt=Camcorders_Professional_Video_Cameras&hash=item43ba52c894 but the shipping price is too high since I live in Croatia. Any suggestions? I can spend around 70$.

Answer
HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

DSLR Cameras, all Makes, all Models, all have the same problem when video taping some long videos, all overheat at the 13 to 18 minute mark, depending on the Make and Model. This is unavoidable, it all has to with the fact, video is an afterthought in DSLR camera production.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video

I need help in Handycam Camcorders?

<>

Hey everyone. I want to get a new Handycam Camcorder, ignoring price, which has high mega pixels, a good brand name, loads of functions, and reasonable size and efficiency. I have set my eyes upon certain ones, still, I am really very confused, and I need some help:

-Which is better as a brand in cameras: Sony or Cannon?
-What is the difference between the HDR-XR200V 120GB High Definition Handycam® Camcorder and the HDR-XR500V 120GB High Definition Handycam® Camcorder?
-Which one is better to buy from the above?
-Which is better: Canon Camcorder HG 21 or the HDR-XR500V 120GB High Definition Handycam® Camcorder?

Please answer those questions, IGNORING PRICE. Thanks for everyone!
I only want a Camcorder, so, don't say "Don't get a Camcorder"

Answer
You did not tell us WHY you want a camcorder or what you expect to capture to video. Hard disc drive camcorders fall off my short list because of their known limitations with high vibration and high altitude environments. "High vibration" (or shock) sources can be loud crowds, loud engines, or even loud music - amplified or not. MiniDV tape and Flash memory camcorders do not have these issues. At least with the 3 HDD cams you listed, you could switch to flash memory - if you have space on the memory card or brought extra memory cards.

The XR200 has no mic jack. External mics are a very limited selection to those from Sony which can work with the Active Interface Shoe. No mic jack falls off my list.

The XR500 has a 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo mic jack... so that's OK.

Both the XR200 and XR500 have extremely limited manual audio control - "Normal" or "Low" (for loud audio environments to prevent the audio from being muddy and clip too much). This is too limiting. No manual control falls off my list.

The XR200 and XR500 have a "SmoothSlow Record feature for capturing short (3 second) high speed video and at normal 30fps playback that results in 12 seconds of payback. They also have a built-in infrared emitter for "zero light" NightShot mode. These are novelty features - unless you plan to do "Ghost Hunters" or "Blair Witch Project" type videos.

The Canon HG21 has a 1/8" audio in jack and manual audio control... That alone makes it a superior camcorder to the other two.

All three used AVCHD compression. Too bad. Too much compression. All three have no cost effective method to archive video.

All three are consumer-grade with small lenses and small imaging chips - just setting the expectation for poor low-light behavior - that's all. This is not limited to these camcorders, but all with similarly sized lenses and imaging chips in consumer camcorders.

If it was my money, I would not waste it on a hard disc drive camcorder. For best video quality, DV/HDV is still king... In the consumer space, this means the Canon HV30/HV40 or Sony HDR-HC9. If your computer can't handle a firewire port and you are convinced by the marketing hype that non-tape is the way to go, then at least consider flash memory instead. The Canon HF series and Sony HDR-CX12 make that short list.

Be advised that the software in the box with any of these camcorders will not provide a robust editing environment. For AVCHD or HDV format, Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere float to the top if you are in the Windows/Vista environment (MovieMaker can't handle either); for Macs, an Intel-Mac running iMovieHD '08 or newer or the current versions of FinalCut Express or Pro are required for AVCHD; HDV has been useful for several years (iMovieHD 05; FinalCut 5.1).

Your computer will need LOTS of RAM, REALLY fast CPU and LOTS of hard drive space (and NOT the hard drive that has the start-up system) for editing.

I need a good quality camcorder thats mac compatible?

Bob

I make movies and put them on youtube. I want to buy a good quality camera maybe even hd and my limit is about $250. Im a mac user so it must e mac compatible. I have a great camcorder. But its a 2007 sony ad it doesnt work with my mac. So i need to buy a new camera. A lady at bestbuy told me mosy sony cameras
Now are mac compatible and work. But i was looking at some sony cameras. And all of them said no mac os. Anyonw who has a mac help me out here? If its hd its good, preferably long battery for filming, and great fast movement shots when running with it. Dont tell me you cant get one like that. Cause my iphone can do that. But its time for a real camera

Answer
My curiosity is at the root of the quesiton - WHICH Sony camera do you have that's not compatible? There are ways to get video from ANY camera, even the oldest ones near the invention of television, onto a computer. Maybe we can fix your root problem here before you run out and buy a new one. So, once again, which camera do you have, and which Mac do you have? To ID the Mac model, go to the top-left Apple menu > About This Mac > More Info... - in there, the "Model Identifier" (i.e. "MacBookPro3,1") would be very helpful, as well as the version of Mac OS X you're running (i.e. 10.6.4).

Beyond that, which new ones were you looking at that said they're not Mac-compatible?

That said, virtually all cameras now are compatible with Windows or Mac machines, and you can do quite a lot on a Linux system as well.

The safest bets tend to be DV tape-based cameras, but only if you have a FireWire port on the computer. In file-based cameras, you'll likely have to convert the files, but again, there are ways to do that. For me, programs like MPEG Streamclip and ClipWrap have been great Mac utilities for cracking some of those stubborn weird camera formats.

Answer
Hi No Regrets

I do weddings for a living (among other things)

The Canon XHA1 (Your first link) has been replaced by the XHA1s. It is very similar to the Canon XHG1s (Your 4th link). As it is very light, you will need a mono-pod to keep it steady.

The main difference between the XHA1s and the XHG1s is that the XHG1s has additional connections (BNC type connectors for streaming out pure HD (not HDV) if you are planning to use this camera for TV, multi-camera shooting, etc.) For wedding work, you most likely don't need these features and you will save about $3000.00 if you go for the XHA1s. They both shoot in SD and HDV format so that you can grow with the camera.

With the money you save, you can get a wireless microphone to capture those wedding vows clearly.

The Canon XL2 (your second link) is also a good camera but shoots only in SD. It is a larger camera than the XHA1s/XHG1s cameras. You may find it a "front-heavy" camera, meaning that the weight of the camera is towards the front due to the heavy 20X zoom lens. The XL2 is meant to be held on your shoulder. The XL2 has a removable lens so that you can add other lens to the XL2. The XHA1s/XHG1s lens cannot be removed.

If you like shoulder mounted camera and want to go the HDV route, try the Canon XLH1a/XLH1s camera. It is the top-of-the-line camcorder out there right now. It is similar to the XL2 but does both SD and HDV and comes in beautiful black. This is the camera I currently own and use for my wedding business.

Forget about the Canon GL2 (your third link). Go with the XHA1s/XHG1s camera.

One thing to keep in mind is that all the Canon cameras are not good in low-light situation such as in the case of wedding where most church and receptions are lit with very little light, so you may need to add in a small light to the camera. I use the Canon VL10i (which is about 20 watts) and just enough light to fill in the faces. Don't go over board with 100 Watt (blaring lights) as they will be too bright and distracting and ruins the atmosphere.

It seems that you want to go the Canon route. For low light situation, the Sony camcorders are the best for that.

For Sony, take a look at the HVR-V1U, HDR-FX7

In summary, if you are not a strong person, go with the XHA1s/XHG1s. Your shoulders will thank me later. But if you need the capability to change lens (which I never had to) and want more of a "pro" look go with any shoulder mounted camera.

Believe it or not, people still view small cameras as "amateur" and large camera as "professional".

Good luck in your wedding business

Wedding Videography Business: Canon GL2?

ad

Hello-

I am in the process of starting up a wedding video business. I have 1K to 2K to spend and was thinking of purchasing the Canon GL2 Camcorder. Would this be a good beginner camera to use for this? And also for parties, events, corporate gigs, etc? Any info you can supply would be great as I am new to this!

Thanks!

Answer
The GL2 is a good camera, but if I were you, I'd get a pair of HV20s or HV30s. I had a GL2 for about a year and a half and I recently sold it to buy a Canon HV20, technically a consumer camera. Why? The GL2 was getting old; it is an SD camera, and while most of us don't have Blu-Ray burners, it would be a mistake, in my opinion, to go spend thousands of dollars on SD equipment. HD downrezzed to SD looks better resolution-wise than footage from the best SD camera. Despite the GL2's great quality, grain was always noticeable in even medium low-light situations. HD also gives you the flexibility to remaster certain projects in HD in the future.

Also, the GL2 is expensive, even if you get it used off of eBay (by the way, when I got it December '06, the average price was $1600, and now, the resale value is around $1100-$1200). Like Nikolai said, the GL2 has a 3.5mm input jack. This is okay if you're planning on using mics such as the Rode Videomic, but if you plan on using XLR mics, which have balanced outputs so you can use cables five or ten times longer than the 10'-20' limit of 3.5mm unbalanced signals, or the option of being able to accept live feeds from a mixer at a concert, you'll need an XLR adapter. Beachtek and Juicedlink make great adapters, but they'll add about $200 to the cost of the GL2. Add any mic to that, and it'll be about $150-$300.

Now, that doesn't sound like a lot of money since your budget is 1-2k, but if you're going to be shooting events, you'll definitely want more than one camera. Not only does it make your finished product more interesting, but it also gives you more flexibility if you run out of tape or if you accidentally bump into the tripod during taping because you can just cut to the other camera. And the chances are pretty low for the other person shooting to mess up at the same exact time. Even if you got just two GL2s and nothing else, it would still be about $200-$400 over your budget.

I got my HV20 off of eBay for $660 plus shipping. I also have a Beachtek DXA-2S adapter and NTG-2 XLR shotgun mic. If you are planning to mount the mic on the camera, a Rode Videomic will probably be fine, but if you are planning to use a boompole, then a mic such as the NTG-2 will suit you better. Shameless plug: I'm selling cheap painter's pole to boom pole adapters, by the way ;-)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MESEX:IT&item=220227197941&_trksid=p3984.cSELL.m315.lVI

Probably the biggest reason people get the HV20 is because of its 24p. Basically, if you've ever noticed how the news looks more "real" than a movie is because of film's 24fps speed. While it may seem to not matter much to you, shooting wedding videos, events, corporate videos, and even parties in 24p will make it seem much more "professional." Most people won't know what the heck you did, but they'll know it looks good. And of course, the HD as well. Remember you can always edit in HD and print to tape in HD. This won't do most people any good, but if there's someone who's dying to have it in HD and they have an HDV camcorder, they can just take the tape and play it.

As for the HV30, it's basically the same exact camera as the HV20, but it's black, features 30p and 24p, has an improved LCD screen (read: larger vertical viewing angle), and a new zoom toggle (?). Oh and the hot shoe cover doesn't come off unless you cut it, which might be a problem if you're mounting the Rode Videomic to the camera. And it costs around $880 (at the cheapest).

Oh and consider getting a WD-H43 for your HV20/HV30, if you do decide to get one of these camera.

So I think that's everything. Hopefully this helped and if you have any more questions, feel free to contact me!

Best digital camcorder to buy?

Q. I really want to buy a digital camcorder to make my own videos (for youtube etc)
I don't want to spent to much but i want one that works well and has good graphics. Do they work on Vista?
Whats the cheapest i should pay?
(i live in the uk)

Answer
Go to cnet.co.uk, and click on 'Camcorder Reviews', then visit 'Editor's Top Rated' and 'Most Popular Reviews'. Most of the information you need would be on that website.

You can buy a decent digital camcorder for around £300, but if you want something a little more professional, like the Sony HDR-FX1, be prepared to pay around £2000. You may want to go for something in between, like the JVC Everio GZ-MC500 which, as they mention on Cnet, is suitable for amateur film-makers. For a cheap camcorder, Argos is selling camcorders for around £150, such as the Samsung VPD361 Mini DV Camcorder. Don't ever buy second-hand camcorders - there would definitely be something wrong with it; why else would the seller sell it off?

Look out for the newer models of the old model - a newer version would have extra, improved features added to the previous version. Always look for what's best for you and be clear with what aspects are more important to you than others. For me, it's recording time, battery life and visual motion quality; for you it may be visual quality, design and editing software, everything else may be secondary (no camcorder is perfect, there's always a flaw). Go for HD camcorders, the visual quality (graphics) is much better than non-HD camcorders. Also, makes sure you know the definitions to certain technical jargon, such as CCD. Make sure all the accessories and cables are compatible with your computer.

Before purchasing a camcorder, go to electronic shops e.g. Dixons, and try out different camcorders to see which is best for you. If you see something you fancy, then purchase it online as it's much cheaper that way. When you go to the shops, don't act like you've never had a camcorder before and pretend to know your stuff... or you may get conned! Yes, camcorders do work on Vista. After looking through all the possibilites, I'm probably going to buy the Sony Handycam HDR-SR8.

If you're going to make a video for Youtube with your new camcorder, don't shoot videos of yourself, it's just sad and corny.

Good, High Quality Camcorder/Camera?

ANONYMOUS

I am looking to buy a good, high quality camcorder. (I really would prefer a camcorder opposed to a camera, I have a very expensive camera that, unfortunately, doesn't take video.)

I need one the has very nice focus, and would be good to be used for "beauty & fashion" videos.

I don't have a very strict price set, but it should be around $300 - $500, it's OK if its a bit more or less, but I would like one that would be a good fit for me.

Answer
With camcorders, good quality starts at around $1200. High quality reaches 5 digits. For your purpose a Sony Handycam and some good lighting should be enough. With a backstage type dressing mirror (the ones with lots of lights around) which is standard for beauty and fashion preparation, you shouldn't have much of a problem.

I need a camcorder that has a shoe mount on top but also a mic-in jack. I want a smaller camera though (like a handycam). Not looking for anything too expensive though. I'm looking on ebay but I'm not sure what to look for. My budget is about 150 for a used item.

Sony HVR-A1P HDV Camcorder?

Tristan

I purchased a Sony HVR-A1P HDV Camcorder second-hand.
It did not come with the software or user manual.
When I search the Sony website for that particular camcorder I can not find it.

Where would I be able download the software for the camera?

Answer
Probably because the A1P is the Australian/NZ version of the camera. Sony UK has the manuals for the UK version A1 E which is probably identical.

What do you think of the Sony HDR-XR520V Handycam® camcorder?

coldcity80

I'm looking to purchase a good HD Hard Disk Drive camcorder. I'm a Sony fan, but there are several options out there. Should I instead look into purchasing a Canon (Flash Memory) camcorder? What's better, Hard Disk Drive --or-- Flash Memory?

Answer
Short answer: Flash Memory.

Long answer:
With the known limitations consumer hard disc drive camcorders have with vibration/shock and altitude, challenges archiving the video and huge expense recovering data from crashed hard drives, I no longer recommend hard disc drive camcorders.

Flash memory camcorders use the same highly compressed file types so if you must, then flash memory is better between the two. Check the Sony HDR-CX500 series or Canon HF or HF S series camcorders.

Please keep in mind that video compression = discarded video data = reduced video quality. Also, if you are expecting to edit that video, you will need an editor that can deal with AVCHD/MTS files. There is nothing useful in the box with the camcorder and if you are running Windows/Vista, MovieMaker cannot deal with MTS files (Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere float to the top. Macs have iMovie '08 or newer that can deal with AVCHD/MTS files (or FinalCut).

If you want best available video quality, then you need least compression applied to the video data stream. That continues to be DV and HDV format - and for consumer camcorders, that means miniDV tape. Canon HV40. It also happens to be the least expensive camcorder available with a mic jack and manual audio control. Since we are here... Check what the bigger dogs use...

Sony HDR-FX7, HDR-FX1000, HVR-Z1, HVR-Z5, HVR-Z7
Canon XH series, XLH series
Panasonic AG-HVX200
JVC GY-HM series

Most are miniDV tape. Those which are flash memory save to DV/HDV format - not anemic AVCHD (except the Panny - it saves to DVCPRO HD onto P2 cards). There are no prosumer or pro-grade camcorders with internal hard drives. The external hard drives (Sony and Focus Enhancements FireStore) save to DV/HDV.

Sony Handycam HDR-CX100/B Camcorder and the Sony HDR-SR11. Which ones better?

Nate

HDR-SR11 has a greater price than the HDR-CX100/B by a few hundred bucks...could someone tell me whats so much more pricey that the HDR-SR11 seems better?

Answer
The SR11 is a few years old and hard disc drive based. At the time it was introduced, it was near the top opf the line of their consumer AVCHD camcorder. They were discontinued and replaced by the XR series.

The CX100 is a newer design, uses flash memory (fewer moving parts so longer battery life). But it is basically the entry level of the Consumer camcorders using AVCHD. A better comparison to the SR11 would be the flash memory HDR-CX500 series (not the CX100 series).

If I had to choose between the two (CX100 and SR11), I would probably go with the CX100 because:
1) flash memory does not suffer from the known issues hard disc drive camcorders have with vibration/loud audio.
2) flash memory does not suffer from the known issues hard disc drive camcorders have with high altitude.
3) removable flash memory does not suffer from the known issues internal, built-in, hard disc drive camcorders have with data recovery when the camcorder breaks befor the video has been transferred for editing.

HOWEVER, shopping in that price range, I would take the Canon HV40 miniDV tape based camcorder over any consumer flash memory or hard disc drive camcorder. More flexibility, built-in archive when the tapes are not re-used, manual audio control, mic jack, 24p and 30p - among several other reasons... Sony abandoned the consumer miniDV tape environment when they discontinued the HDR-HC9. Interestingly, they think anemic AVCHD/MTS is "good enough" for consumers who don't know better - but their prosumer HDR-FX7, HDR-FX1000, HVR-HD1000, HVR-A1 and professional HVR-V1, HVR-Z1, HVR-Z5 and HVR-Z7 all record to DV/HDV format, mostly to miniDV tape...

samsung DVD camcorder disk error all of sudden help?

Billy Zeke

OK heres the deal we had this camera for years i just figured out how to use it to make videos and upload to u tube channel billybillscrapper
well one disc which i re recorded on was freezing up skipping showing parts of other scenes on parts of others so i decided to clean the disc and lens welll now niether disc work i get NO DISC ERROR ??? I didnt clean other disc that one also DISC ERROR syaing NO DISC in camera when i sure as heck know it's in there.

Tried everything by removing batterry turn off cam unplug power cord remove battery because i did this beforewhen camera acted up and it reboooted itself and worked fine weell not all thatgreat all videos recorded on overwritten disc froze up paused skipped etc...

YOU can see them on billybillscrapper @ you tube

I read this expensive camera ($400)is known for wrecking data on new disc turning them into coasters etc..

So do i just go buy the memory card now and forget about using hard disc? seen prices like $30 in walmart for scan disc 5 gb but i read the memory cards for these samsung mini DVD cam corders also dosent work well.

my model is the SC- DC575 both disc are DVD-RW ! Anyone have a fix or had similar problem? I got a feeling i'm going to sell this camera for $150 and buy a sony instead .

Baterry lfe dosent even go 1/2 hr!

Answer
Hi Billy:

Well, now you know why they stopped making DVD camcorders. But, first, the good news:

Yes, you can go buy an SD Card to use for video recordings instead of hassling with mini-DVD blanks (and all the "finalizing" & formatting issues). Just don't buy one bigger than 2GB (that's the limit for that 2007-era camcorder). Most camcorders with dual-media (like Sony or Canon) only store still-photos on the SD Card or MemoryStick, or just low-rez "email friendly" 320x240 size videos. Yours stores full-frame 720x480 standard-def MPEG4 videos, which should look fine on YouTube.

Now for the bad news: when you said you not only tried cleaning the disc but also "the lens", you may have damaged the delicate laser-lens assembly.

I won't try to go into a lot of detail about trying to reuse & reformat used DVD-RW discs and the whole "DVD finalizing" thing before removing your recorded discs. You can download or read the Samsung manual online: http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/201102/20110214235151702/SC-DC171_SC-DC173U_SC-DC175_SC-DC575_110214.pdf

Page 89 covers Memory Cards, and page 100 covers recording video onto the SD Card.

Samsung also shows a firmware-update (from 2007) for your model camcorder. Here's the Samsung USA support page for the SC-DC575: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SC-DC575 That may or may-not help your DVD recording problems.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

Will the Sony HDRTG1 camcorder be compatible with Mac video editing software?

Eric I

I saw this camera in the Sony store today and will probably pick it up... IF it is compatible with the Mac.

Answer
It will work with the most current Apple Macintosh iMovie HD that is bundled with the current iLife08. It will work with the most current FinalCut Express and it will work with the most current FinalCut Pro2.

There is nothing different about this camcorder - but the AVCHD compression it applies to the video can only use the video editing apps that will run on Intel-based Macs because there is a lot f number crunching going on to decode this very highly compressed video.

You can download the user manual here:
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=HDRTG1

Refer to Page 27.

The software included in the box with the camcorder is for Windows only - That does not mean the camcorder is not compatible with Macintosh, it just means Sony does not provide any software. Please note that there is an address to which you get directed:
http://guide.d.imaging.sony.co.jp.mac/ms/us/
that does not work. If you go to the FAQ at the product page, there is a section on Macintosh being compatible with iMovie08 and how to connect. Use the HDD link.

Note that you will need to buy ($20) the "MPEG2 Playback component for QuickTime" from Apple. While you are at it, download and install StreamClip (free) for when you deal with MPEG2 standard definition files http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html

Personally, I stay far away from AVCHD compressing camcorders... and stick with better video quality in DV/HDV video recorded to miniDV tape. Canon HV20, HV30, Sony HDR-HC7, HC9 for new ones. I currently use a Sony HDR-HC1 and am about to get a HVR-V1U.

editing software.?

Karla C

So i have a panasonic SDR-S10P/PC cam corder. I would like to use it to record my video's for youtube instead of my crappy web-cam..the problem is my cam corder comes with its own editing software called "Motion SD Studio"..the thing is i have NO CLUE how to use it..i've been using window's movie maker for a while so i would like to keep using that (it took me forever to learn it) the problem is once i video tape myself with my cam corder and try to upload it up using windows movie maker i can't find the file.Is there anyway to save somewhere else so i can upload it with WMM or should i just go buy the 140.00 web cam at best buy...LOL...

Answer
A camcorder is still better in recording video than a webcam.
You have passed the initiation stage in video editing thru win movie maker. The software supplied, 'Motion SD Studio', will surely give you another perpective in editing... a better one since you can edit the imported video files straight away. Whereas, you will definitely have to a.) transfer SDR-S10P/PC files thru windows explorer to pc, and b.) convert (via Prism or Super) these files to avi or wmv, an extra step outside wmmaker, before editing in win movie maker.

Believe me, you'll survive...video editing is almost similar for intermediate editors.

hook up a webcam to my camcorder?

tonybam14

i am getting ready for a game and i wanted to know is there a way to hookup a usb webcam to a camcorder?

Answer
Camcorders with a USB port generally use that USB port to transfer stills from a memory card or do "USB streaming" where the video from the camcorder's lens goes OUT from the camcorder or to copy video files form a hard drive or flash memory - again, out from the camcorder (and into the computer).

So while you can connect the USB web cam to the USB port on the camcorder, there is no intelligence in the camcorder to take the video from the USB web cam and somehow process that video somewhere in or through the camcorder.

And while you did not tell us which camcorder you are using so we can try locate the manual to be sure, I am fairly certain connecting a usb webcam to any camcorder will result in nothing happening.

Small, high quality camcorder?

Lynn

Is there a camcorder that can take high quality HD video, small, and light? I currently have a traditional camcorder where I hold it against my pain and the viewfinder flips out but I'm looking for something more inconspicuous. Previously, I was looking into the Kodak zi8 (discontinued), Flip ultra HD (discontinued), go pro (fish eyes). What other camcorders are there that are structually similar and with high quality video capabilities?

Answer
HD camcorders interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video.

And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video.

I'm looking for pro-tips when buying one, personal experience with a certain camera, one you'd buy if you were given the choice, or anything else it would be good to let me know.

I haven't really looked into buying a camera for myself, actually; this is my first time. I'm looking into a Sanyo Xacti; any experience or anything with that would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance :)

Will AVCHD camcorders degrade my video quality?

Julie-Anne

While looking at the 2009 releases from Sony/Canon/Panasonic, I've noticed that a lot of the camcorders being released will be formating to AVCHD. This causes me to continue to remain apprehensive about purchasing an newer HD model.

QUESTION #1) Is it true that AVCHD recording onto hard disk drives (HDD) will not produce as good a picture as camcorders formating to HDV on MiniDV tapes?

And I want to stay eco-friendly with my film making....

QUESTION #2) Is there any Hard Disk Drive (HDD) camcorders available out now that don't format to AVCHD? (That is, if it DOES degrade the video quality.)

QUESTION #3) Is HDD a good investment for me considering I'm a film student? Can I stay eco-friendly and switch to HDD or is it a smart decision to stick to MiniDV?

** A FEW MORE FOR THE CAMCORDER SAVVY**
QUESTION #4) Which has better video performance/quality: Sony's HDV HC-1 camcorder (despite its' age) or the Canon Vixia HV30?

QUESTION #5) Is there any cameras coming out this year, in consideration to what I'm looking for in a camcorder/your answer to QUESTION #1, that you know is worth waiting for?

QUESTION #6) Given what you know, do you think that the new video features on the Canon Vixia HV40 (March 2009) without a doubt are worth waiting for, despite it being similar to the HV30?

Answer
Q1) Yes.

Q2) Yes. But not consumer-grade internal hard disc drive. External hard disc drives connected to miniDV tape based camcorders (like the FireStore from Focus Enhancements or the external hard disc drives Sony sells in their HVR pro-series line up) are available and they write DV and HDV.

Q3) It depends - If you know all your video capture will not include high altitude (over 9,800 feet) or high vibration (really loud crouds, music - amplified or not, loud engines, etc.) that can cause the hard disc drive heads to park resulting in no video recorded, then maybe. What is your plan for video archiving? Remember - with miniDV tape, that original tape IS the archive - just lock it and don't re-use it - and store it in a cool, dry, place. Otherwise, eliminate the potential for the problems by not investing in the the camcorder with the known problems. MiniDV tape and flash memory do not have the vibration and altitude problems HDD camcorders have.

Q4) If you stay in 1080i (HDV) or standard definition DV or DV widescreen, under good lighting conditions, the HC1 and HV30 will provide similar experience. Their lenses and imaging chips are similarly sized. The HV30 has a better 24p capability which provides for a more "film-like" appearance. The HC1 has a built-in infrared emitter for low light monochrome video capture in zero light. The HC1 is a bottom tape loader which can be a problem when changing tapes if mounted to a tripod or quick release - the tape door is blocked, but there are "spacers" available that remedy this. I have a HC1 and have happily used it for years - augmented - not replaced - with a HDR-FX1.

Q5) There is always something "new and improved" coming out. As long as DV/HDV stays in miniDV tape in this range, I'll stick with miniDV tape. HDD and flash memory have to many extra steps for archiving that I don't like dealing with.

Q6. The HV40 adds 30p (in addition to "real" 24p). I don't know how current video editors will deal with that. I *think* that is the only real, "material", difference - though others can probably come up with more detail - the differences between the HV30 and HV40 are actually pretty minimal (you already know this).

Tip: As a film student, you will want to be using good mics, too. All of the camcorder mention in this reply have a 1/8" (3.5mm) audio-jack. Good mics use XLR connectors. You will want to investigate XLR adapters like those from juicedLink (preferred) or BeachTek. As well, flexible mics like those from NRG Research (I like my SA-568 switchable shotgun mic a lot) and a universal shockmount like the Sabra SMM-1 need to be in your kit.

Have you discussed your thought process and short list with a trusted instructor? What is their opinion?

camcorder video quality?

Michael

Using Adobe premiere, Is there a way to increase video quality, not to HD, but better quality? Also, will replaying the video on the camcorder before putting it into the computer hurt the quality of video when I finally put it in the computer? Also, when video is put threw a USB cord, is that a form of compression?

Answer
"Using Adobe premiere, Is there a way to increase video quality"

Not really - you can play with things like the colour balance, exposure etc but whether you're getting an overall improvement is questionable.

"Also, will replaying the video on the camcorder before putting it into the computer hurt the quality of video when I finally put it in the computer?"

No. If it's a tape based camcorder you'll wear the tape out eventually, but it's not a real problem.

"Also, when video is put threw a USB cord, is that a form of compression?"

Not exactly. If you've got a tape based camcorder the video data has to be streamed - you can't go back and resend the last couple of bytes if your PC missed them because it was busy doing something else. USB isn't good at streaming so tape based camcorders use firewire for the video and mostly just use USB for transferring stills. I say "mostly" because some camcorders have a "USB streaming" mode - it's mainly so that you can use the camcorder as a webcam and it works by compressing the video. Unfortunately that compression lowers the quality and often leads to problems with AV synch when you try and edit the video.
