Me and my friend are going on a road trip and we just want to film it.
The most important aspects are:
-under $150
-Decent quality videos
-Battery life can last (since we will be going to hotel rooms every other day or so)

I could be asking for a miracle camcorder :/

Do you have any advice or suggestions?

What is the cheapest place and the cheapest camcorder that will do slow motion?

Mr B

I've found out a lot about Sony slow motion camcorders that do 240fps, but I can't find a place that will do one for under £500 in the UK. Me budget is round about £250. Cheers,

Answer
Any camera can do slow motion. Well you can on an editing program. When you import the video, on windows movie maker you can put it in slow- mo, fast motion, black and white, and a bunch of cool effects. Hope this helps and Good luck!

What's the top ten cameras that people use for professional looking youtube videos?

Johnny K

preferably under 100

Answer
I don't know what the first answer means.
"pro looking" for under 100 whatever it is will be very hard to achieve.
For that money you can have one of those pocket camcorder like the flip and the likes.
They are good and some of them even record at full HD.
I have a flip mino HD 2e gen and I find it awesome.
make sure you have plenty of light, this is crucial for any good looking video.
after that you may need a bit of software to edit. your computer may have it already built in, look for imovie if you use mac or windows movie maker if you use windows.

for better result, once the video is edited, make sure you keep the original resolution of your camera, and keep the compression to a minimum. youtube does its own compression so you dont want your video to look too bad after your edit it.
hope this helps

I'm trying to get into video production, mainly editing. I use Sony Vegas, Final Cut Express, and I will learn how to use Adobe Premiere in a class I'm taking soon. What camcorder could I use that will give me high quality footage and be compatible with Mac and PC? Is a Canon VIXIA HF R20 suitable for creative filmmaking?

Patrick Ur

I'm planning on buying a new camcorder, the Canon VIXIA HF R20. I'm interesting in short filmmaking (and heck, maybe not-so-short filmmaking) and the question arises, would this be a good camcorder to use? From tests I've seen, it looks good, but I want to get some other input.

P.S. I do have an external microphone, a ZOOM H2 recorder, and I use Sony Vegas Pro 10 for editing.

Answer
I think any working camcorder can be used for creative film making. It all depends on what your needs are. This camera has some serious limitations, chief among them is shortage of manual controls. The auatomatic settings on Canon are very good and for simple shots they will do most of the time. Where you will eventually run into some frustration is when you try to emulate certains shots you have seen elsewhere. Don't ;et that discourage you. You will simply need ot be creative about plannign your shots. Making sure you light properly will be even more important since you have less control over certain things. It also does not seem to have manual focus. if it does have it, it looks like it is implemented in a clumsy way that will be useless during a live shoot. Again, not preferable, but there are ways to work around this.

The biggest plus to the camera is a great image for the price. That alone makes it a decent camera to start on, but don't expect too much in other areas.

You may be better off spending a couple hundred more and getting a T2i. you will have reduced video features, but your image will be closer to cinema quality.

What are good ways to steady a video shot?

ghettostee

What are good ways to steady a shot?
I'm referring to just using a personal camcorder (Canon VIXIA HF S21) for making short videos with edits, not something too professional.
Do most people just use tripods? I find it annoying to have to set up most every shot on a tripod, especially if you do a few different takes for each scene.

Answer
Tripod.

Learn to stand still and stable while holding the camera.

Prop yourself and/or the camera against another stable object like a wall, post, table, etc.

Still, if you seriously want to make good video, you don't moan and cry about how much trouble it is to move a five or ten pound camera and tripod. This takes SECONDS to do.

TrustedReviews says...
Panasonic's HC-V700 takes a different strategy to its very top-end models, with one larger sensor rather than three slightly smaller ones. But it still produces excellent image quality. It's lacking a couple of features compared to Panasonic's top-end models, in particular a lens ring and heaphone jack. But plenty remains for the enthusiast, with a full set of manual controls, a microphone input and standard-sized accessory shoe. This is primarily a premium point-and-shoot camcorder, but it's high on quality.

Pros
Great image quality
Good range of manual controls
Effective image stabilisation
Cons
No lens ring
3D attachment doesn't allow zooming
No headphone minijack

Computer for Video Editing/Film making, Expert help?

Hey guys, I make a lot of Youtube videos and I use Sony Vegas for editing. My current computer isn't that great so I am wanting to build one. I built one on HP's website. Here's the components:

⢠Windows 7 Home Premium 64
⢠3rd Generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770K quad-core processor [3.5GHz, 8MB Shared Cache]

⢠SuperMulti DVD Burner
⢠Beats Audio (tm) -- integrated studio quality sound
⢠Premium HP keyboard and optical mouse
⢠Adobe Premiere Elements & Photoshop Elements 10

Total Price: $1,382.99

I heard that the Intel i7 processors were amazing. I think this will be really good for what I do. I make Gaming videos with my HD PVR. CONSOLE GAMES. The only PC game I play is Minecraft, so I won't be doing a lot of gaming, strictly video editing and rendering.

Will this computer be great for rendering at blazing speeds? It takes my current computer around 10 hours to render a 35 minute HD video. I want that to be rendered in at least in an hour.

I'm also going to be buying the Sony Vegas Pro Suite for it and the Adobe Master Collection later on. The Vegas Pro Suite has 2 vital pieces of software to help my production value look a lot better. That is Sony Vegas Pro 12 and HitFilm Ultimate 2. These both are GPU accelerated and here are their requirements:

----Sony Vegas Pro 12----

Microsoft® Windows Vista® 64-bit SP2, Windows 7 64-bit, or Windows® 8 64-bit operating system
2 GHz processor (multicore or multiprocessor CPU recommended for HD or stereoscopic 3D)
1.2 GB hard-disk space for program installation
750 MB hard-disk space for content installation
4 GB RAM (8 GB recommended)
OHCI-compatible IEEE-1394DV card (for DV and HDV capture and print-to-tape)
USB 2.0 connection (for importing from AVCHD, XDCAM EX, NXCAM, or DVD camcorders)
512 MB GPU memory
Windows-compatible sound card
DVD-ROM drive (for installation from a DVD only)
Supported CD-recordable drive (for CD burning only)
Supported DVD-R/-RW/+R/+RW (for DVD burning only)
Supported BD-R/-RE drive (for Blu-ray Disc⢠burning only)
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.51 (included on application disc)
Apple® QuickTime® 7.1.6 or later for reading and writing QuickTime files
Internet Connection (for Gracenote musicID Service)
GPU-accelerated video processing and rendering require an OpenCLâ¢-supported NVIDIA®, AMD/ATIâ¢, or Intel® GPU with 512MB memory or more. Detailed specifications and driver requirements can be found at: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/vegaspro/gpuacceleration

----HitFilm Ultimate 2----

Recommended system requirements

Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Quad or AMD Phenom X4
RAM: 4GB
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX or AMD/ATI Radeon HD 4850 with at least 1024 MB video memory and support for OpenGL 2.0.
View more graphics cards which meet our recommended requirements â
Screen resolution: 1280 Ã 800 in 32-bit color mode
Sound card: Internal sound card
Hard disk space: 300MB free disk space for program installation
Internet connection: Required for online activation and HitFilm.com web services

Intel 64-bit Itanium (IA64) enterprise class processors are NOT supported.

Will my build be able to use these flawlessly and render very quickly?

Also, I am wanting to have a TRIPLE MONITOR SET UP. Is this computer capable of that? I heard you needed 2 graphic cards or something like that to have a three monitor set up. Is that true?

I don't want a Mac. I like Windows 7 the most and I am most familiar with PCs.

In conclusion, will this help me a lot or should I go in a different direction?

The PC was created here: http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/cto.do#anchor-top

Thanks a lot!

Answer
Everything looks good but I would definitely get a bigger HD and a more powerful power supply. 300W probably won't be nearly enough power with that setup, and 500GB doesn't seem like all that much space nowadays, especially for storing videos.

Whats a good cheap film making camera for green screens to do HD youtube videos?

best camcorder green screen on Join us for a special visit to San Ildefonso Pueblo, one of the best ...
best camcorder green screen image

Captain

I'm using after effects to key green screens and need a good camera for hd footage but I dont have a high budget. I dont really need the cam for filming anything else, just me in front of a green screen, but the effects going behind the project are more elaborate, so I need good quality too.

Answer
Any can work - assuming the lighting is good and your computer and video editor can do what you want.

Step 1: Set a budget. Spend less on camera or camcorder = spend more on lighting. ""Don't ahve a high budget" tells us nothing. Cameras that can record video can range from $80 to $80,000. If we remove the pro and prosumer gear, we're in the less than $2,000 range. To me, that means $500 is "not a high budget". Something in the Canon HF R series may fit - they also have a mic jack and some sort of manual audio control. Then there's a tripod or other steadying device, a mic or two, and lights.

And we have no idea if your computer can deal with the editing the high definition video you want (and these camcorder capture), or if your video editor can doe the chroma separations. And you need to invest in some fabric or paint and all the other stuff that goes with what you want to do...

What is a good 1080p webcam for youtube and green screen capabilities?

Mark M

I am looking to start a VLOG in my spare time, and I am looking for a solid and affordable 1080p webcam that has good quality video so that green screening won't look choppy. I am aware that I will need good lighting for the green screening, but that is taken care of, I have a good set up as long as the camera works well.

Answer
HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video

What is a good microphone that I could use mounted to a boom pole?

FoxtrotJiv

Hey there, I'm looking for a mic that is mountable on a boom pole and is also compatible with the Canon HV30 camcorder.

A list with your top favorite would help wonders!

Answer
ask 10 audio engineers and get 10 good but different answers!

when you say boom pole, i think you mean a long pole (sometimes called a fishing pole) that is held high in the air to be out of the shot and a mic drops down on the end. It is very tiring and requires a lot of strengh to hold the pole, so the lightest mic possible is the best. it does not need to be directional because it is near the source of sound and the back is to the sky where no sound would normally come from anyway. quite often a miniture lav mic works for this.

in television studios and film lots the boom can be supported on a tripod like stand so a mildly directional cardiod mic is used and it is attached to a device that allows the operator to remotely point it towards the person speaking. It is directional because that eliminates pickup of noise from the pointing swivel device. The operator has to be very practiced to keep the mic pointed correctly.

some people call a shotgun mic a "boom mic" by mistake. a shotgun mic is a very directional mic that is attached to the camera itself, not a boom. it only picks up sound from the same direction as the camera is pointed. this does not always work out good, especially with the wide view angle of modern 16:9 video.

all of these are intended for pickup of dialog and not music. they are mono. the main advantages of the boom over say a wireless mic are it eliminates the mic from being visually seen and it simplifies pickup of multiple speakers. the operator will have to be informed of any camera changes to keep out of the shot, both the boom and its shadow.

What is the best camcorder to use with a MacBook Air?

Mikayla

I just got my MacBook Air (10.7.4) a couple months ago (about august 2012) and I am looking for a camcorder that is compatible with it. I just got a Sony handy cam camcorder for my birthday this month and it is not compatible with my MacBook. Any suggestions? I heard the Cannons are good?

Answer
"Handycam" is Sony's generic name for all their consumer-grade camcorders. If you got a new Sony Handycam that records to high compression AVCHD MTS files and saves to flash memory or hard disc drive, it will work just fine with your MacBook Air.

Connect the camcorder's USB cable to the Air's USB port. Put the camcorder into Play/PC mode. If iPhoto launches automatically, quit iPhoto. Launch iMovie. Name the project. Under "File" import or capture the video. There is no software on the disc that came in the box with your camcorder that your Air needs - for that matter, there is nothing on there a Windows based computer needs, either.

If you need to change the default launch behavior when you plug the camcorder into the computer (i.e., you don't want iPhoto to automatically launch), use "Image Capture" in the Applications folder to make the change.

The Canon HF R, HF M, HF S series camcorders also capture consumer-grade high compression AVCHD MTS files. Comparably priced camcorders will behave similarly. Connecting them to a Mac is the same as the instructions provided above for your Sony.

If you were lucky enough to receive a miniDV tape based camcorder for your birthday, your computer *must* have a firewire port. The MacBook Air and a couple of versions of MacBook do not have a firewire port and have no way to add one. All other Apple Macintosh computers made in the last 10+ years have a firewire port.
