Hey I have been searching for some good camcorders for consumer/prosumer level and I found the NEX-VG10 and I was wondering if anyone has used it and what they thought of it. Also is it compatible with macs? Thanks a lot!

Answer
The NEX-VG10 is merely a high compression AVCHD cam that happens to have an interchangeable lens system.

Pros:
Interchangeable lens system.
On the top of the handle, lift the cover - there is one Sony proprietary Active interface shoe and on standard cold shoe. Interesting - I could see a video light mounted to the AIS and a wireless mic portable base station in the standard shoe.

Cons:
AVCHD compression.
Single CMOS imaging chip - though it is a pretty good size (2.88", I think) it is not a 3CCD or 3CMOS array.
XLR mics require an XLR adapter (juicedLink or BeachTek - there are others)
The "handle" (on top) is connected to the camcorder in a way that there is no real comfortable way to carry the camcorder by it.
The internal mics are too close to where one would be carrying the camcorder so any hand movement caused audio will be picked up by the mic elements. External mics are definitely a must.

Mac compatibility will depend n the hardware and editing application you plan to use. Final Cut Express 4 on a current Mac and current version OSX should be fine to Log and Capture. In theory, should work fine with iMovie '09 or '11, too.

The NEX-VG10 is basically the flash memory version of the HDR-HC1, HVR-A1U mixed with the HDR-CX550... If you are planning to spend that kind of $ for a primary camcorder, save just a bit longer and check the HDR-FX1000 for a primary. The NEX-VG10 would be a fine secondary camcorder used with the FX1000 or HVR-Z7.

which camera do you suggest?

I am looking for a video camera for shooting cinema not tv serial or ads

Answer
If you're into cameras such as the XL H1, then you're most likely looking for a more conventional camera. If you want a shoulder mount, go for the Sony EX3, with the EX1 being the handheld equivalent. Sony also has the new interchangeable lens camcorders, but I don't have any experience with those. The Sony EX3 would be my top recommendation.
