I'm trying to find a high quality, affordable, camcorder (video camera). Recommendations?

I'm trying to get into video production, mainly editing. I use Sony Vegas, Final Cut Express, and I will learn how to use Adobe Premiere in a class I'm taking soon. What camcorder could I use that will give me high quality footage and be compatible with Mac and PC? I'm looking for something that's semi affordable too, but if I have to pay thousands then that's what I'll do! Please suggest away! :)

I'm looking for pro-tips when buying one, personal experience with a certain camera, one you'd buy if you were given the choice, or anything else it would be good to let me know.

I haven't really looked into buying a camera for myself, actually; this is my first time. I'm looking into a Sanyo Xacti; any experience or anything with that would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance :)
