I make amateur movies a a hobby, and I need a new camera.
One with good picture quality and has a external mic jack. I hera good things about DV cameras, but I am worried that taes are going to go the way of VHS's.

A Year ago I would recommend a miniDV.
Today I am undecided. believe You should choose a HD camcorder with a hard disk if You work with a PC.
Many regular camcorders have a mini stereo mic jack and also a mini earphone jack.

I'm looking for a good digital camcorder that has a mic jack, but doesn't cost a cold grand.

The Canon HV40 is a HD camcorder with an external mic input. It was $999, but now I see that the price has dropped down to an average of about $650. I can't seem to find any other makes available.
