What is the best camcorder that makes good quality videos.?

Q. What's the best camcorder for making YouTube videos? None of the flip cameras please.

Answer
Consumer level HD camcorders have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer level HD camcorders all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

With a MiniDV tape camcorder, record 60 or 90 minutes ( camcorder settings), 90 seconds or less to change a tape and record for 60 or 90 more and repeat till you run out of tapes.

You can get a Canon ZR960 for $250. It is a MiniDV tape camcorder, has a Mic jack. You will need a firewire (IEEE1394) card ($25 to 30) for the computer and a firewire cable (less than 10) to be able to transfer video to your computer. To say this is not HD, think about this. It would cost in excess of $3500 to get a HD camcorder that could equal the video Quality of a $250 Canon MiniDV tape camcorder.

I use a Canon ZR930 camcorder and Pinnacle Studio 14 HD Ultimate to import, edit and save out the finished file as a 1080P file for upload to youtube.

What is the best version of the flip camcorders?

amrrashed6

These things: http://www.theflip.com/en-us/, there are like 4 different versions.
I want a camera that can take still photos, and take videos that are at least 1 hr long.
I also want it to be good quality, and I don't want it to be any more than $150.
Which one of them would be best for me?

Answer
Skip the Slide, unless it's on sale for unbelievably cheaper than the other models. Unless you expect to be away from a computer for a very long time (to offload and make space,) or absolutely must review on a 3" screen instead of 2", the 2 hour capacity of the others are plenty.

The Ultra and Mino I assume shoot comparable video, so the main advantage of the Ultra is the replaceable battery and mechanical buttons if you plan to get the underwater housing. The Mino has touch buttons which can be a little difficult to use, (but the record button is a mechanical one,) and is very compact

Note however, because of a filesystem limitation in the Flips, you won't be able to record more than an hour at a stretch. So while 8GB Flips claim a 2 hour capacity, you can't shoot a single 2 hour long video. (At best, you can shoot two 1 hour videos, or a whole bunch of videos that adds up to 2 hours.)

None of the Flips shoot still photos, only 720p video. In theory you could take still frames from your video, but it will likely be blurry, and less than one megapixel in resolution. (2MP is the recommended minimum for printing 4x6 photos.) Look into the other pocket point-and-shoot cameras on the market if you want still photo capability. Though even then, some of those don't have optical zoom or flash units.

What is the least expensive digital video camera out there that has slow motion?

one8092460

y'know ..like one that you can capture 60 and 90fps - legit! Consumer or not ..doesn't have to be HD. Thank you.

Answer
Technically speaking, I believe JVC has the win here, with qualifications. Quite a few of their consumer DV camcorders, such as the GR-DF450 ($299.95 at B&H) have what they call "Live Slow" mode. This mode apparently cuts resolution for a boost in frame rate... I haven't found too many details on it. It does allow real time sound recroding at the same time.

Sony introduced a somewhat similar function in their HDR-HC3 e... it will capture 240 fields in 3 seconds to buffer memory, then write it out to tape at the normal 29.97fps. This is not full quality, and there's no sound. See here:
http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/The-Quality-of-Sony-HC3-Slow-Motion-Video.htm

This mode also exists in Sony's current line, including the HDR-HC5 and HDR-HC7 HDV cameras, the HDR-SR5,7,8 HDD camcorders, and the HDR-CX7K flash-based camcorder. See review here:
http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Sony-HDR-HC7-Camcorder-Review.htm

For any extended filming at a higher frame rate, you might look at the Panasonic HVX200. When recording to P2 cards, it can run at frame rates from 12 to 60fps. This is in 720p mode, so it's HD-ish. Some of the recent models in the JVC ProHD line also support 60p recording, though not the full "varicam" range of speeds.

How to get rid of ringing on a mic connected to a camcorder?

I have an FS200 canon camcorder with a mic input. when i play back the footage there is a loud ringing noise. how do i get rid of this.

Answer
just to be sure you are not falling into that trap.
yes that canon trap
you know the one where they double up their headphone socket with video/audio out

the default is for the socket to be INPUT not output to headphones.

it is really really really really annoying!

you have to set it in the menu as a headphone socket.

============================================
i hope that wasnt it, but you will surely get that one sooner or later,
oh and by the way it gets set back to the default every time it auto-off's itself
and thats another annoying canon trap as well.
=====================================

i have used a MIC pre-amp for years with an older canon and it improves the sound
no end and i use it for near broadcast quality. get yourself a pre-amp
i use a beachtek dxa-2 an older version than the current one
its a bit pricey but there are lots of other makes that do the job too.
it takes XLR mics or smaller models
i use a broadcast quality tie-clip one from Audio technica the 803b
and with the volumes all in the middle it gives really nice quality

anyway i cant really answer why you have the noises unless youve fallen into the canon trap.

good luck

Whats a nice Camcorder to buy, im looking for quality and features?

Where can I buy a good camcorder with IR night vision still currently manufactured?

best camcorders with night vision image

Kade

I'm looking into buying a camcorder for all purposes but some of those purposes involve filming in the dark. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find any good camcorders with night vision still being manufactured and I would like the model to also be fairly new (2010-2011). If you know of any an answer would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
a check of amazon.com for "nightshot" turned up a number of new camcorders, mostly in the Sony DCR HCxx series. this is miniDV. Aiptek, a Chinese brand claims to have a similar feature but i wouldn't recommend their cameras. Sonystyle has no nightshot cameras listed as available.

What is a good camcorder with night vision?

The Ghost

I'm looking for a good camcorder with night vision capabilities. I will use it for my paranormal research group, as we are investing in more equipment. Our budget is 300$ or less. Anything slightly over won't be that big of a problem.

Answer
All CCD sensors are very IR sensitive. In this case your low budget is actually a benefit because there are cheap POS cameras that do not filter IR. Often sold as security cameras, you will need a separate camera and DVR and can get both for under $300 here:

What is the best Hard Drive camcorder on the market?

Sandra D

I was planning on buying Sony SR47 (60 GB) hard drive camcorder, but I did not read too many good reviews on it.
($399.99)
Any suggestions??

Answer
Just to be clear - the Sony DCR-SR47 is an entry level, consumer grade, internal hard drive based camcorder. It is nowhere near "best".

Personally, I do not recommend internal hard drive based camcorders because of their known problems with vibration, loud audio, and high altitude... they can stop recording under these conditions. Flash memory and miniDV tape do not sffer from these problems. As well, HDD camcorders can be VERY challenging when the camcorder breaks and the video has not already been transferred to a computer. The removable media used by miniDV tape and flash memory can be used by other camcorders so access to the video is easier after camcorder failure.

The video file formats are the same when comparing HDD and flash memory - assuming the lenses and imaging chips are the same, the video quality from these camcorders is the same. The only difference is the storage media. Standard definition DV (used by miniDV tape based camcorders) is much less compressed and results in better video quality - again, assuming the lenses and imaging chips are the same size as the "equivalent" HDD and flash memory camcorders... MiniDV tape based camcorders require your computer to have a firewire port. HDD and flash memory camcorders use USB to copy the files - but many times those files need to be converted using a utility like MPEG StreamClip before a video editor can deal with it.

I strongly suggest you stay with miniDV tape (Sony DCR-HC62, Panasonic PV-GS320, Canon ZR960) or flash memory (Canon FS100) and skip hard disc drive camcorders. The ZR960 and FS100 have a mic jack (but no manual audio control) that other camcorders in this class do not have.

What is the most cost effective camcorder out there?

Randy Gall

I am looking for a camcorder that shoots in HD, has a Manual Focus, White Balance, all that jazz. Does anyone know which camera is the best bang for your buck? I have been looking at the different Canon Vixias, but I would another persons opinion on this one.

Answer
The Canon Vixia, Sony Handycam, Panasonic (they don't have a brandname) and other consumer camcorders bury manual controls in a menu. While the Vixias and Handycams at the higher end (in the $800+ range) have a thumbwheel that can be assigned manual focus capability, none in this class have a focus ring. The least expensive camcorder that captures high definition video and has a real focus ring is the Sony HVR-HD1000 shoulder mount - or the Sony prosumer HDR-FX7 for a smaller footprint. If size is an issue, the Sony HVR-A1 (with the XLR adater removed) has a lens-barrel ring that can be either manual focus or manual zoom but it is pretty pricy.

ALL camcorders have a white balance control in their menu system.

Got a Panasonic SD camcorder. Put the files onto computer and can watch ok with windows player straight from the video library but when I try to convert files to DVD to burn it says files cannot be converted.
You thought this would be easy I can convert any other file why not these. Even the Panasonic cam camcorder suite can't seem to play them . Doing my nut in. Will sell camcorder if can't sort it.
After the file number is the letters MOD ? Any ideas.

Answer
Your Panasonic camcorder records to standard definition video to a MOD file type.

These are not files or a format a DVD player can understand. When you burned the files to a blank DVD, you used that blank disc as a data disc - that's why the compter can deal with the video files, but the DVD player cannot. In order for a regular DVD player to deal with the video and play them back, they need to be in "VOB" format. (There are a few DVD players that can deal with other file formats, but we'll assume yours does not.)

Use of a "DVD authoring application" is required. We assume your computer is some flavor of Windows because you told us you used "windows player". You need to download/install something like WinDVD or MyDVD... but there may be another issue because neither of them can deal with MOD files, either... You will also need to convert - transcode - the MOD files to something more useful... like WMV or AVI. MPEG Streamclip from www.squared5.com can do that.

Since the MOD files are in the computer, here are the steps:

Use the transcoder to convert the files to WMV or AVI format.
After the conversion is done, use the DVD authoring application to get the converted files int a DVD file.
Burn the DVD. This will cause the files to be converted to VOB files that the DVD player can deal with and set up a menu system so you can select the "scene" (file clip) you want to play-back.

Things you need to know:

1) The VOB files are even more compressed than the files captured by the camcorder. These can be ripped for editing later, but there will be "generational loss" because of the multiple steps through lots of compression and conversion.

2) A single layer blank DVD can hold up to 120 minutes of video this way - but save some space for the menus. I usually allow 110 minutes of content and save the other 10 minutes of space for the menus.

3) Think about what happens to the original video files - if you don't need them then delete them. If yu want to keep them, where are you planning to store them? This is one of the dirty little secrets the camcorder manufacturers have not been helping consumers with by moving to flash memory camcorders.

How can I get the slow motion effect from MXF 60p recorded by P2 HD Camcorder?

East

I have some MXF video files shot with my P2 HD Camcorder. I am shooting at 60P, but I want to slow the footage 50 percent for editing. I assumed that if I selected the 30P setting that the footage would be slowed, but the converted shot is the same length as the original footage that was shot at 60P. How can I get the slow motion effect?

Answer
You did not tell us what you are editing with or where you "selected the 30P setting" to slow the video playback speed.

Don't convert anything until the video editor can deal with the video. Then use the video editor's controls to do what is needed.

+++++

I just answered your FCP question.

Once the video is in FCP, place the clip you want to slow into the timeline. Click once to select it. On the command line, under "Modify" select "Speed". Adjust as needed.

My son is a high school senior. Next year he wants to go to community college and live at home (at least that is reasonably affordable) instead of going away to school. He wants to take an expensive major however. Video production. We have been able to save about $5,000 towards his education. We are not wealthy people. The rest will have to come from loans and maybe a grant or scholarship.
We are looking at some "entry level" pro cameras in the $1500-1800 range. That's about 1/3 of our savings for his education.
Models include these:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/518555-REG/Sony_HVRHD1000U_HVR_HD1000U_Digital_High_Definition.html
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/745707-REG/Sony_HXR_MC2000U_HXR_MC2000U_Shoulder_Mount_AVCHD.html

and
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/749467-REG/Canon_4922B002_XA10_HD_Professional_Camcorder.html

My concern is he starts September 2013 so these products may not even be available by then or others will be available. We hope he graduates May 2015. He tells us when he graduates he will maybe find a freelance job or shoot local cable news, build up some experience, maybe after 2 years go for a B.A. at least part time.
Is anything we buy him in 2013 (summer) going to be any use to him as a working professional in 2015 (summer)? So let's say you are a class of 2012 graduate with an AAS in video production. The camera you purchased in the summer of 2010 when you first started, do you still use it professionally? Can you make anything doing freelance news videos, PR videos or local account commercials with this equipment?
We're going to do everything we can to help him. No doubt he will still be living at home in the summer of 2015. By then he's going to have a student loan to pay off. We have a 2005 Hyundai Accent that we are going to give him for college. I hope that thing still runs when it is 10 years old and he isn't making car payments on top of that. The thing has 120,000 miles on it but runs really well. I just fear when he graduates he's going to be in deep debt and have limited employment. I may be wrong. What do you think? Thanks.

Answer
Hi "Upwardly Mobile":

Fellow Contributor "L" covered most of the bases quite well, but the only point he didn't underscore is that MOST good video & film production programs at community colleges HAVE the cameras, lights, mikes, tripods, and other gear that the students will learn on & use.

When I went to a local (but nationally prominent) university with a Broadcast/Film Dept., portable video was still fairly new, but all the film cameras, tripods, & light kits were supplied by the Department for students to "check out" as-needed for class projects.

And most video production students start out with Studio Production techniques (where it's easier for groups to learn 3-point lighting, camera setup & tripod/dolly operation, shot composition, audio techniques & mixing, etc.). No need for portable field gear there.

For field production & Electronic News Gathering, a good college will have a fair number of camcorders for students to use & check out (if needed for outside-of-class projects).

The same is true for Editing Software & computer workstations. Some college programs might be economizing and making students supply their own laptops for this, but all the major software companies offer Academic Editions of their normally-expensive edit suites at discounted prices. And of course, nowadays, apps like iMovie (Mac) and Movie Maker (PC) come "free" as part of the operating system and can accomplish what older (and expensive) software used to do, as far as basic editing.

As "L" mentioned, do a bit of "homework" yourself by contacting the community college's department head & instructors for your son's chosen major. Tour the facilities (studio and edit suites) and ask about the "equipment room" for student project gear. See what textbooks (a major expense) are required, and whether computer/laptop & software expense will be part of what's expected of your son. Only if there's little-or-no camcorder gear (or no hands-on studio cameras) would I recommend buying anything like the models from B+H that you listed.

Almost every cable TV & freelance video job I've had over the past 30 years has "supplied" (rented or company-owned) the cameras & grip gear I needed. I bring my own gear only when it's a "favor" or when what I have is better-suited to the task, or they want a "director with gear". My point being, your son doesn't need to own =any= camera gear to make a living freelancing. A good camera operator can stay busy in almost any part of the country, with just his/her skills. (Same for sound mixers & boom/wireless mike operators.)

hope this helps, and hope it saves you some money,
--Dennis C.

When I connect the USB port from my camcorder to my mac, it does not import onto I-Movie. I don't know what to do. I have a Sony Handycam DCR-DVD710 and my MacBook is version 10.4.11. Is there something that I need to convert or can my camcorder not download to macs? Please help! Thanks!

Answer
First make sure you have the right drivers on your mac for your specific camcorder (chances are you do), then plug it in and open finder... your camcorder will be under "devices" open it... find the file you want then drag and drop it into the program you want to use like I-movie. (you might have to save it into another document first... I'm not sure with your specific camcorder... but thats what i do with my camcorder)

How to import videos from camcorder to mac?

Kaya

I'm trying to import the videos from the memory card in the camcorder to my mac. When I plug it into my laptop it automatically opens iPhoto and when I try to import the video I keep getting an error saying that it is an unrecognized format. I thought I could then change the "Media Format" on the camcorder then it asks "Int. Memory" or "Memory Card" then when I click "Memory Card" it then says "Format? All data will be deleted. Est. Process Time: 9s" I'm worried if I click "Yes" all the data on the camcorder will be deleted because it's my friends I don't want to delete her stuff. So I'm wondering what it will delete and if it will work to import on to my laptop? Also if any one knows any other way to import it to a mac that would be great.

Answer
And you did not say anything about the camera or camcorder. You did not say anything about your Mac.

The work "photo" in "iPhoto" should be a hint - it is not designed to deal with video, but it can do *some* things.

DO NOT format the card. You will not be able to recover the video or still image files. ALL files on the card will be deleted if you format the card. If you want the files in the camera or on the memory card, DO NOT format anything.

If we knew which camera and which Mac, we'd have a better chance at helping you. Right now, we do not have enough information to provide any detailed assistance.
