What camcorders have great audio but qre of a low price?

best camcorders consumer on and Ratings - Consumer Video - Sony HDR-CX110 HD Handycam Camcorder ...
best camcorders consumer image
Q. Hey, I've been looking for a good camcorder to make YouTube videos. I want to sing, play guitar, piano, all of that. But the cameras that I've been told to try out usually have this scratchy and muffled sound added to my voice. And other cameras are just not in my price range (I'd pay no more than $200 for a camera).
I'm no expert on cameras so please, please help! Thanks.

Answer
HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video

What are the features which go into making the best professional camcorders?

billy

And how are professional camcorders different from prosumer/consumer camcorders?

Answer
1. smpte time code
2. xlr mic inputs with phantom power
3. 3 CCD sensor
4. headphone audio monitor jack
5. bayonet mount lens (like on a SLR)
6. high data rate recording, 35 to 100 mbps.
7. mpeg2 or DV encoding
8. easily balanced shoulder mount
9. genlock for matching multiple cameras

pro camcorders are primarily different from consumer in that they sample 4:2:2 color space instead of 4:1:1 (ntsc) or 4:2:0 (pal) and connect with HD-SDI instead of HDMI.

is there a way to convert a cassette handycam into a HD handycam?

best 5 camcorders cnet reviews on ... Wonder EZ105 Overview & Specs - Digital Camcorders - CNET Reviews
best 5 camcorders cnet reviews image

Parag

i want to use a hard disk or a flash drive memory to record my videos. the cassette technology is absolete and do not wish to spend a lot of money for buying a new camera. also, the quality of my cam is good. i only want it to record directly into a flash drive.
i know about the converting softwares but i don't want to waste time on that. please help!

Answer
I would say that (mini)DV tape is obsolecsent rather than obsolete -- that is, on its way out, but still here for awhile. I still see new miniDV camcorders for sale, and of course the tapes are sold wherever the camcorders are sold. I would keep using miniDV tape for now, and not replace (or try to modify!) my camcorder just to stop using tapes.

If the Handycam is Hi8, I would agree that it's nearly obsolete. But if it's Digital 8, it at least uses the same codec as miniDV and would load into a computer via FireWire just the same. But, those tapes are getting harder to find.

There is no practical way to convert a tape-based Handycam to record video onto SD (SDHC) cards inside the camcorder -- and there is really no way at all to convert it to HD if it's SD. Since you don't want to spend a lot of money, a Focus Enhancements FireStore unit outside the camera is also out of the question, because they cost more than consumer HD camcorders (at about $850).

If you want flash-based HD video and are guided by price alone (not quality -- these have fixed focal length plastic lenses), get a Flip or Aiptek or Webbie. They can record HD to SDHC cards for around $100.

For more quality, there are many decent flash memory HD camcorders out there for under $600. Here's an article comparing several:
http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-camcorders/4321-6500_7-6617259.html

----------------------------
BTW Someone said that tape-based camcorders don't compress video. That is not true (except for analog tape formats). ALL digital camcorder formats compress video, even professional tape-based digital camcorders (the lowest compression ratio of all being DigiBetacam at 2:1). DV (and Digital8 and DVCAM and DVCPRO25) compresses video 5:1 (HDV would be 12:1 by doing the math -- I can't seem to find it listed anywhere).
The codec is a factor, too; AVCHD uses a codec about twice as efficient as HDV (using about half the bit rate for the equivalent in image quality, that is 12Mbps AVCHD = 25Mbps HDV).

Is there a video camcorder that records right to disk?

Digitaldum

Is there such thing as a videocamcorder that records right to a disk? If so, what kind of disk and what will it play in (DVD player, computer, etc.) Also, does anyone have any suggestions of models if there is such a thing, ideas on price, etc? Thanks!

Answer
There are models that record to mini-DVD's produced by all the major manufacturers (Sony, Panasonic, JVC, Samsung, Canon, etc).

The disk is a DVD format, but smaller in size, so it only holds like 1.5 Gigabytes, instead of the full 4.7 Gigabytes of a full size DVD. Just like VHS tapes, you can record different lengths of time based on the quality selected (20 minutes at highest quality to over an hour at lower quality settings).

If you look closely at your DVD player, it likely has either something in the center that spins the disc (so it can easily spin a smaller DVD) or an inner "ring" where the small format discs will sit when they are played. Almost all modern DVD players will have no problem with these discs.

Price can run from $500 on up to $1000 depending on what features are available. I suggest shopping around, and trying to see which ones are most comfortable for you to use, and have feature you like.

Also, many websites have reviews of such camcorders, although the reviewers are often hung up on technical details that the typical user doesn't understand or care about. Examples include camcorderinfo.com and cnet.com.

Places like Best Buy, Circuit City, and Fry's have good selections, or if you are in New York City, check out B&H Photo Video, which has the entire range of camcorders all the way to high end professional models.

A professional camcorder that I can change up the lense, filter and whatever, on as I get more money. A camera I can eventually get an okay quality with for fictional motion pictures. Advice?

Answer
Hi Janie:

From your Y!A Profile, you are in the 19- to 21-year age category, so your funds might be somewhat limited, but at least you have a good idea for trying to stretch your initial purchase budget.

Also, I see you are in Sweden, which historically has been a PAL-TV format country, so you might avoid NTSC-only camera models. And rather than try to keep up with Krona and Euro exchange rates, I'll keep my monetary discussions in Dollars.

As far as "true camcorders" which have a higher tariff rate in Europe than Digital SLRs (like the Nikon D-series, the Canon EOS line, or the Sony Alphas) you will find not find many changeable lens models for less than the $2000-$5000 USD price range. (The really good changeable lens video cameras tend to run in the $12,000-$50,000 USD range.)

Having a wide range of interchangeable or upgradeable lenses is one of the appeals of the Digital SLRs (dSLR) that have "movie modes". Plus, the camera bodies are in the hundreds rather than thousands of dollars price range. One downside is the lack of professional audio features, since these are designed primarily as still photo cameras, not movie-making camcorders.

If you care to update your Question with "Additional Details" giving us a more-specific price budget ("cheap" is a very relative term, especially to a young adult) then specific brand and model recommendations can be made.

To stretch your budget money, I'd recommend looking at used-equipment rather than new, when starting out.

hope this helps,

What camcorder should I get for movies and commercials?

burgundygh

Im looking for a camcorder that is professional, HD, SD card, and something that has longevity. I dont want to make an investment and something better comes out. Ive heard of the RED cameras but I cant afford that. Ive looked at some DSLR's. What do you recommend for movies and commercials?

Answer
Take a look at the Canon XF100. As far as I have seen, it is the only Pro-camcorder at it's price to get a 50 mbps data rate. Everything else under about $5000 is getting half of that, making them little better than a good consumer twinkie-cam.

At $3300, the XF is not much more expensive than a 5DM2 with a good lens.

What do you do with your home movies?

best camcorders home use image

I'm starting to amass quite a collection of HD videos shot with my camcorder, mostly typical home movie stuff. For a while I was editing them and burning the edited videos to dvd. That takes a lot of time and I've fallen years behind. For now I just keep all the videos on my hard drive (and a back up drive). What do you do with all those gigabytes of video? Edit them, stream them from your computer? Burn them raw to disc? Thanks.

Answer
Main options:

-Hard drive, especially with redundancy. A RAID-1 setup is a good start.

-Blu-Ray archival. Get a Blu-Ray burner, which can be found around $100 now, and some discs. Personally, I like burning all my raw media to Blu-Ray disc, unchanged - camera folders intact. If you have time and space, make doubles of every one. Then, save at least one copy of your edited video in the best resolution that fits the project (for example, a standard-def DV file for videos edited from MiniDV sources...or something like Avid DNxHD or Apple ProRes or Apple Intermediate or Adobe DVCProHD or AVC-Intra for HD videos).

Another solution, one that will cost, is sending them out to be backed up to hard drive, Blu-Ray, DVD, whatever. It comes down to what your time is worth to you, and what you can afford. There's no real easy or best answer, but those are some options.

* Genuine Canon 10x HD Video Lens

How do I make a time lapse video with a camcorder?

I have a miniDV camcorder and Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5. I would like to record a drive around town and make a time lapse video.

How do I make a time lapse video? Do I just speed up the footage or am I supposed to use another method?

Answer
it depends on what software you are using to edit it, but yes i guess you can say you just speed up the footage. be careful though because on most programs you can only speed it up so much, by the little control. there should a special time lapse effect somewhere which speeds it up to the speed you want (like makings hours a couple of seconds) etc. i would just go to the little help men and type in "time lapse" on your program and it should help you find it. assuming you are using a decent program that has time lapse...you won't be finding it on windows movie maker just to let you know

I intent to shoot a wild life documentary, please tell me what features should I seek in a video camera or what model do you recommend the most, in order to make great close ups, slow motion and movie like videos, thanks

Answer
The best camera i can recommend from both experience using cameras and making films would be a Canon XL2, this camera is what i consider a middle of the range camera with regards to professional cameras. If you want to make documentaries, well i have seen people make documentaries for tv with this camera. The camera is equipped with a 20 x optical zoom (20 times closer than how you see it on the camera viewfinder) which is more than capable of zooming in on objects from a distance, but it depends on how far away you are from the subject. Cost is dependant on where you buy it from, but you should be able to get one for $6000 NZ Dollar ($3000 USD approx)
If you aren't after something this price, then you should look for a camera with a large optical zoom, avoid digital zoom because the quality of picture is lost using this type of zoom due to magnifying the picture rather than using lens elements to get physically closer, which is what optical does. For example i have a Canon MV730i which has a 20 x optical zoom and does a great job, but nowhere near the quality of the XL2. So it comes down to a matter a choice in the end, i like Canon as they have superb picture quality while others will prefer Panasonic and Sony...
Check out www.canon.com for details.

I need a lot of memory because I want to major in photography. I want a good quality laptop.

Answer
Here is what the professionals use.
The new Sony Vaio AW-Series is an 18.4-inch laptop aimed at photographers. Full coverage of the Adobe RGB colour space offers total accuracy for editing, thanks to the 3LED back lighting system also found on Sonyâs Bravia TVs. The AW-Series comes with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom as well as Adobe Photoshop Elements pre-installed. The VAIO AW-Series has an Intel Core 2 Duo T9600 processor, NVIDIA 512MB GeForce 9600M GT graphics card, 128GB Solid State Disk and a 500GB SATA drive. Price and availability to be announced.

rawing on its strengths in the field of display design and refining them to a new level, VAIO has created a new class of portable. It has screen technologies never seen on a notebook, from the massive 18.4-inch diagonal and Full HD resolution to its 3LED backlighting system. Serious photographers and owners of HD camcorders will instantly appreciate the absolute colour fidelity on offer â full coverage of the Adobe® RGB colour space delivers the total accuracy essential to perfect editing. Quite simply, this is the best â and only â notebook screen of its kind.

3LED backlighting is a technical breakthrough found on high-end BRAVIA⢠LCD TVs. It uses the pure red, green and blue light emitted by LEDs to generate a super-wide colour gamut capable of correctly reproducing the full Adobe RGB colour space. Whether you are editing photographic images or HD video, or simply enjoying an HD movie, this means the best possible picture quality. Put this together with Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution and you have the screen by which others will be judged.

The AW-Series comes with Adobe Photoshop® Lightroom® as well as Adobe Photoshop Elements, providing users with some of the very best photo-editing software tools available. Sony original software including Image Data Converter, Picture Motion Browser and α setting plug-in for Adobe Photoshop Lightroom further enhance the appeal to serious photographers. As well as the convenience provided by the settings plug-in, owners of Sonyâs α DSLR will experience the quiet pleasure of seeing an echo of the cameraâs design aesthetic in the distinctive and beautiful finishes available for the AW-Series.

The huge Full HD display offers true 16:9 widescreen, so when you play a movie on the integrated Blu-ray Disc⢠drive, you are treated to superbly cinematic visuals. Dolby® Home Theatre audio signal processing and 2.1 channel speakers complete the mini-cinema effect, with enhanced bass from the integrated sub-woofer as well as immersive surround sound. Should you prefer, an HDMI⢠output lets you the whole High Definition audiovisual experience to an HD TV or Home Theatre.

From a technical standpoint, the VAIO AW-Series is as impressive behind the scenes as from the front. Everything you need for outstanding multimedia performance is there, from the Intel® Core⢠2 Duo T9600 processor, power 3D graphics courtesy of NVIDIAâs® 512MB GeForce® 9600M GT and a very special combination of disk technologies. In a world first, 128GB of Solid State Disk (SSD) Flash memory works together in a RAID array with the 500GB SATA drive to boost performance when working with large files, which are stored on the SSD for extremely fast access.

I have some old cassetes from about 7-9 years ago and I want to be able to play them on my lap top. I know some stores will do it, but it's about 50-75 dollars and I was trying to find an easier way.

Answer
If it's 7-9 years old there's a fair chance it's either a Digital8 or MiniDV camcorder. If so, you'll need to capture the video via firewire - if your PC hasn't already got one you'll need to install a firewire card. They're cheap, easy to install and readily available. You'll also need a firewire cable.

Once everything's connected you can capture and edit the video with Windows Movie Maker (it should already be on your PC), save it as DV-AVI (it's under Save on My Computer, Best quality show more choices, Other settings) and then write it to DVD using DVD Flick.

I need help finding the digital camcorder that's right for me. There are some things I'm looking for:
1. Set up vertically, with a screen that is turned/pulled out to record video.
2. Ability to record both video and take pictures (I care more about video quality than picture quality) and upload to a laptop.
3. There should be no restrictions on the length of a video recording, other than the memory of course.
4. High quality sound recording. For decent audio at concerts.
5. I'd appreciate it if the camcorder was kinda small. Small enough to be carried in little purse, or smuggled into concerts.
6. Ability to zoom in for pics and videos. The more the better, obviously.
7. Ability to function as a webcam.
8. Lol, I'd really love it if it came in colors other than silver. Black, white, or pink would be awesome!
9. I want to spend as little money as possible, but am willing to pay a lot if the camcorder is worth it. You get what you pay for.

Does anyone have any advice? Thanks!

Answer
I know what you are looking for and in general it is trash. The problem is that most camcorders that are vertical record using memory at really low quality. Although they are very small they have a terriable image and generally even worse audio. However there small size and cheepness (like this one at $210 somewhat make up for that http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/customer-reviews/B000EVLZNQ/ref=cm_cr_dp_all_top/002-6861088-3094417?ie=UTF8&n=502394&s=photo#customerReviews ) Really I would insted recomend a cheeper Mini DV camcorder like this one http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-camcorders/panasonic-pv-gs39/4505-6500_7-31660660.html?ar=o&tag=pdtl-list . This camera is cheep at only $212 from Amazon.com. Plus this camera has a fold out screen, can take pictures ( however poor of quality), can record for 1 hour or 90 minutes (the length of a tape in SP or LP modes), Very inportantly has a microphone input so if you dont like the quality of the built in one you can buy another mic from bestbuy for around $50, is small this camera is defiantly small enough to go in a jacket pocket or a purse, this camera can defiantly zoom with a 30x OPTICAL zoom. Optical is very inportant, while a digital zoom "zooms" by croping the picture/image and loosing image quality an optical lense zooms by moving a physcial glass lense. Optical zoom is always way better, and 30x is a lot. However past around 15x the image gets too shakey to use. This camera will also function as a webcam though the built in USB port. Sorry it doesn't come in colors. Overall this is a good cheep camcorder. The quality differance between Mini DV and memory is fairly drastic, especially on the low end camcorders. Plus with features like a longer battery life and external mic jack you really cant go wrong. Mini DV is always the best choice.

Is it a pain to take pictures with the Flip Ultra?

i want to get a new camera but i want one that also takes great videos i know that you can take pictures from the video on the computer but is that i pain to do??

Answer
You may want to start your search for a digital video recorder at
CNET, a Web site that specializes in reviews of electronic prices.
Their reviews of digital camcorders
(http://electronics.cnet.com/electronics/search/0,10126,0-6342639-1302-0,00.html?tag=dir)
gives the highest rating to the Sony DCR-PC9, which costs around
$1,300-$1,400. The site says lauds the camera's small size, ease of
use and picture quality. Of CNET users who rated the camera, 92% gave
it a "thumbs up."

The top-rated camera in the $1,000 and below price range is the Sony
DCR-TRV17, which scored just below the PC9 from the editors and has a
95% thumbs up score from users. It is listed at $829 to $1,009.

Some words of caution: CNET does not rate every digital camera, and,
unlike Consumer Reports, it accepts advertising. Consumer Reports
(www.consumerreports.org) does have ratings of digital video recorders
(released last December), but accessing them requires a paid
subscription.

A third site, Consumer Search, is sort of a review of product reviews
from magazines. Its list of top digital camcorders
(http://www.consumersearch.com/www/photo_and_video/digital_camcorders/index.html)
includes the Sony DCR-PC110 and DCR-VX2000, the Panasonic PV-DV
series, the Canon ZR25MC and the Hitachi DZ-MV100A.

The *bestselling* digital camcorder at Amazon.com is the Panasonic
PVDV52, which has a price below $550 and an average user rating of 4.5
out of 5.

I could tell you more from the reviews, but that would risk
infringement on copyrights, so you'll have to visit the sites
yourself!
Regarding picture quality, Leonard Fischer of USA Today
(http://www.usatoday.com/life/cyber/ccarch/2002/03/06/fischer-dv.htm)
says all digital camcorders record at the same picture quality:

"When searching for a camcorder, choose the best camera you can
afford, but realize that you're going to be able to create
good-looking footage on any digital camcorder because they all record
footage at the same resolution, regardless of what other special
features they include."

As for burning video onto a DVD, that is a function of your computer
and its software, not the camcorder itself. See this Fischer article:
An exception is the Hitachi DZ-MV100A, which records directly onto a
DVD.

Finally, recording time depends not on the camera but on the tapes and
batteries you get for it. Again, the Hitachi DZ-MV100A is an
exception, because it does not use tapes. According to
MPSuperstore.com (http://www.mpsuperstore.com/video/indexMy.htm?discr17964.htm),
the Hitachi can record from 30 to 120 minutes, depending on the
settings.

For the second part of your question the answer is that you require 3 things to do this

1. A Hardware Capture Device That Allows You To Connect Your Mini DV
or 8mm Playback Device To The Computer System.

2. A Video Software Capture Program. Your Windows or Apple Operating
System May Have Already Included This Type Of Program As Part Of The
Operating System. This Would Depend On The Operating System Version?

3. A DVD R/W Drive. It Is Possible Depending On The Computer System
For This To Be Either An Internally Installed Device or Externally
Installed Device, Again This Would Depend On Whether Or Not The
Computer System Is Capable Of Or Configured To Support The Type Of DVD
R/W Harware Peripheral You Choose(internal or external).

There are many internet hobbist sites and bulletin boards that have
vast amounts of information on what you are asking about. I would
suggest a Google search for "How To Video Capture On A Computer
System." I included such link below this line as starting reference
for you. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

What are the ten top ranked video cameras, how much do they cost, and how many mega pixels do they have?

Answer
Which camcorder? Pocket cams or consumer cams or prosumer cams or professional cams?

Ranked by what? Lowlight performance, or ease of use or ease of editing the video or ease of transferring to a computer or ease of archiving the video or video quality or audio quality or something else?

camcorderinfo.com is a good place to start. cnet.com is pretty good too.

the ones with the handles on top, I heard most of them are in SD not HD so doesnt that mean a canon vixia which is much less money and is HD is better? I just want the best picture quality I dont mind much about having a low maximum recording time or so many formats of video storage.

Answer
It depends on who is doing the video capture.

"The ones with a handle on top" include the
Standard definition:
Sony DCR-VX1000 series, DCR-VX2000 series, Panasonic AG-DVX100 series and Canon GL series. Some are "prosumer". All record to low-compression DV format.
High Definition:
Sony HDR-FX1/FX1000, Canon XHA series, XLH series. While these are high definition camcorders, they can also record to DV format. All use miniDV tape. Same with the Sony HVR series pro camcorders - with one exception, noted below.

The reason most are Standard def is used to capture the video is because lots of compression and fast action do not get along well (and results in poor video).

For many different reasons, just because something is "new" does not mean it is "better"...

But the Canon Vixia HV40 can record in standard def and high def... and you *could* use a "Scorpion".

Please note, all of the above use digital tape. This means your computer MUST have a firewire port. USB won't work and USB-to-firewire cable/converter/adapter things don't work.

If flash memory is a requirement, then you have the Panasonic AG-HVX200 (P2 cards), Sony HVR-Z7 (SxS CompactFlash) and JVC GY-HM100 (SD memory cards).

There is no consumer-grade AVCHD camcorder that records to flash memory or hard disc drive that will provide "good" video of fast action sequences. There is no prosumer or pro camcorder that uses an internal hard disc drive. There are external hard disc drives (Sony, Focus Enhancements FireStore) that can attach to a prosumer or pro-grade camcorder if a hard drive is a requirements - they are expensive and also record low-compression DV or HDV format video.

What is the Best Camcorder for Professional Action Sport Photography?

Doug O

I will be taking it snowboarding and skiing mostly. But need top notch quality. Price range: Below $1000. Thanks

Answer
For new, your request has mutually exclusive terms. There is no Professional video (or still) camera anywhere near $1000. You can get by with $2500 +/- Pro-sumer cameras running uncompressed MiniDv.

The consumer, camcorders under $1500 all use the same H264 highly compressed so-called "High-Def" recording format. The term "high-def" is pure marketing. Canon, JVC, Sony...all use the same format, pick one you like (for action, look for the biggest (diameter) lens you can get, Optical Image stabilization, etc)

The data rate says it all: MiniDv= 13 gigs/hour for 720X480 while the highest resolution H264 is 11gigs/hour to record almost twice the pixel information.

True High-Def rings in around $6000. Cameras for production run about the price of a small house.

I have paid $1500 for a used Canon GL-2 and would gladly do so again before I spent $1000 on a H264 camcorder. Similar cameras can easily be found for under $800. I found a like-new Canon XL-2 for less than $1000 several months ago.

Want a $1000 consumer camera, pick a toy any toy. Want video you might be able to sell, hit the auctions/want ads and find the best MiniDv you can get your hands on. JVC, Sony, and my favorite...Canon, all make fine cameras.

How to import videos from a sony ccd-trv615 camcorder into the computer?

I have an old sony ccd-trv615 hi8 camcorder and recorded a video for my project. I want to edit it with my windows movie maker but I don't know how to import the videos from the camcorder into the computer. Can someone please help me?

Thank you

Answer
Aunsoft Final Mate, a great and useful camcorder assistant software, has everything needed to directly capture/backup AVCHD (*.mts, *.m2ts), AVCHD Lite, AVCCAM, NXCAM, TOD, MOD recordings from Hard Disk Drive/SD Card Camcorders to PC, to import, edit and create spectacular movies on a timeline. It is also powerful enough to play/convert native 1080 60p/50p footages and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround.

Export/convert edited camcorder video to other editors (Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere, WMM, Pinnacle Studio, etc), media devices (iPad, iPhone4, droid x, nokia n8, galaxy s, hdtv, projector, etc), or common formats (mov, avi, wmv, mp4, mpg, mpeg-2, etc) with the high quality and least amount of clicks. Ultra extreme performance with support for NVIDIA® CUDATM and Intel while encoding.

you can google it and have a try .

Any recommendations for converting Hi8 videos to digital video I can watch on my PC?

ZX3R

I have a bunch of old video I recorded on my Hi8 camcorder. I'm switching over to digital and don't want to loose my old video. Is there an expansion card with software I can find that does it?

Answer
I bought a device from circuit city for about $70, made by pinnacle. They are pretty well-known for these kinds of products and so far it has worked really well. I converted over a lot of hi8 stuff and was very pleased. If you do it in mpeg2 it doesn't even take up that much space. I'd probably stick with pinnacle, but shop around and find one that fits your specific needs. Here's a cheap one I found:

How do I open up my files from the camcorder onto Windows Movie Maker?

goatherder

I have a Sony camcorder which records in the AVCHD format. So far I have been able to import the files onto the computer using the Sony Software from the CD I installed but every time I try to get these files onto any other program on my computer it says the files aren't supported. What do I do?

Oh, and I'm using Windows Vista.. HELPP!

Answer
MovieMaker does not support AVCHD encoded files. You need to get a video editor that does. Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere always float to the top.
