Want to upgrade from my old analog camcorder to a digital. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the 3 recording formats: DV Tape vs. Mini DVD vs. Built-in Hard Drive? I plan on doing video editing so ease of upload is a strong consideration. Is the video quality the same (excluding HD)? Also expense is a concern; the cost effectivness of buying tape vs. mini DVD or going Hard Drive. My main subject matter will be indoor sports events under not the best light conditions. Is one format better for recording such events than another. Is there buying criteria for the camcorder such as image stabilization and low light recording that I need to pay attention to. Any other buying tips would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Everything I've read says that mini-dv is better quality than mini dvd or hard drive. The other two formats are more convenient. If you don't want to have to process at all, mini dvd is the best. Hard drive writes to an editable digital file. With min dvd you would have to convert to an .avi or .mpg file to edit. With the hard drive you would have to write a dvd (to have one). Hard drive will be the cheapest as far as media goes of course because you never need to replace it. Both mini dvds and mini dv cassetes are both relatively cheap. You can record over mini dv cassetes without losing quality. Most people buy write once mini dvds. As far as filming in low light, you'd have to research the price range you are considering and read the reviews. Spend $6 and buy a one month subsription to consumer reports online, they review the top models without bias.

What is the top 5 Hard Drive Camcorders on the market right now?

this is my first camcorder and i would like to buy it for my girlfriend for christmas. I would prefer to spend less than 1g

Answer
Check camcorderinfo.com... and do everyone a favor - ditch the hard drive camcorder and get flash memory or miniDV tape instead.

I have a 2010 JVC Everio GZ-MG630RU camcorder. i recently bought a laptop with Win-7. i found out that Win-7 does not recognize my camcorder . My question is: how do i go about transferring the videos on my camcorders Hard Drive to the cameras mini SD card ?

Thanx

Answer
Excerpt from Amazon.com. Read your manual and your question makes no sense. Why do you want to copy from HDD to SD when the camera doesn't seem to have an mini SD card?

Everio Features

All 2009 Everios make sharing and watching videos easier than ever. New for this year is the One Touch Export function that allows Everio videos to be imported into iTunes and loaded into an iPod or iPhone. All 2009 Everios also offer One Touch DVD burning and the One Touch Upload function that JVC introduced to users in 2008 as a new and convenient way to upload videos to YouTube.

To use any of the three functions, simply connect Everio to a PC using the supplied USB cable. Then, the user chooses one of three buttons on the Everio: UPLOAD, EXPORT, or DIRECT DVD. Pressing the button will launch the appropriate Windows PC application that comes bundled with Everio, and the user simply follows the simple on-screen prompts. With just a few mouse clicks the process of uploading to YouTube, exporting to iTunes, burning to disc or transferring to an external hard disk drive will be completed. For uploading to YouTube, the user can perform an in-camera edit of any length video to fit the 10-minute YouTube limit.

For disc based archiving, there is an alternative to using a PC. JVC offers the CU-VD50 Direct DVD Burner/Player as an option, which allows burning of Everio videos to a DVD disc without having to use a PC.

The new Everio MediaBrowser software supplied with all Everio models is a Windows application providing an easy-to-search calendar-type graphical interface for indexing and finding video files. Thumbnail images of recorded videos and stills are superimposed on the calendar so itâs easy to see when any scene was recorded. The Everio MediaBrowser also allows easy playback, simple cut editing, and "Decomotion" to spruce up recorded footage with animated graphics for upload to YouTube. It also supports Export to iTunes, Upload to YouTube, burning to disc or transferring to HDD.

Another new feature found on all Everio camcorders is Digest Playback, which offers an easy and entertaining way to check the content residing on Everioâs HDD or SD/SDHC card. The function automatically selects highlight scenes from among the recorded content using JVCâs proprietary algorithm and plays back what looks like a "coming attractions" trailer for a movie. Sixty minutes of footage is condensed into five minutes of highlight scenes.

Other Everio features have been enhanced for 2009. Laser Touch Operation has been updated to allow control of zooming and recording using either the Laser Touch scroll bar or buttons next to the LCD screen, as well as by the standard zoom lever and REC button. And as before, Laser Touch makes it easy to browse through thumbnail images of recorded scenes and access menu selection. Power-linked operation, long offered by JVC, goes a step further this year. Simply opening the LCD monitor automatically opens the built-in lens cover and powers up the camcorder. Closing the LCD also closes the lens cover and shuts down the power. With Quick Restart, recording can start in about one second after the LCD is re-opened.

In addition to performance and convenience, the 2009 Everio line offers plenty of style and shooting comfort. A new design features elegant curves, a silver-framed LCD and a comfortable angled grip with a new dual use strap. The strap can be used in the usual camcorder fashion, supporting the userâs hand when shooting, or it can be extended and used as a wrist strap like the type on most digital still cameras.

What HD video camera/camcorder should I buy? Please write the pros and cons of the camera and type the name or send the link. Should I buy a flip? Or something?

What do I look for in a video recorder? Which one is the best?

top mid range camcorders on GoPro Helmet Hero HD Camcorder | Best HD Camcorder Review
top mid range camcorders image

Expecting

Hello, Thanks in advance for your answers. I have decided to purchase a video recorder, but I honestly don't know anything about them. So I would like to know what to look for and which brand is the best? I know for sure I want a digital HD but that is all. Please help me with the rest.

Thanks, XOXO
I do mean a video camera recorder.
Does more megapixels mean better quality?

Answer
Before you pick a particular camcorder, establish a budget and define what you need.

Pocket camcorders up to about $250.
Entry level consumer camcorders from $250 to about $500.
Mid range consumer camcorders from $500 up to about $1,000.
High end consumer camcorders from $1,000 up to about $1,400
Prosumer camcorders top out at around $3,000.
Then the jump to "pro grade".

As you go up the food chain, the lenses and imaging chips get bigger which means better low-light behavior. More features are added - and a mic jack and manual audio control are added. When you get to the prosumer level, the manual controls (focus, zoom, audio gain among many others) are on the outside of the camcorder and not buried in a menu.

Generally speaking, video is measured in horizontal line count and "megapixel" count is not used. Megapixel count is used for still camera resolution measurement.

Flash memory, hard disc drive and miniDV tape are the common digital recording formats available for camcorders. Consumer flash memory and hard disc drive compress the captured video the most. Video compression = discarded video data = reduced video quality. MiniDV tape camcorders compress the video date a lot less than flash memory and hard disc drive camcorders.

If you plan to edit the video then we can help more if you provide details on your computer hardware, operating system and what you *think* you would be editing with.

The software included in the box with the camcorder is typically useless, so please do not depend on that.

What's the best cheap video camera today and where I could find more things about this?

benjo_ferr

Just wanna know what is the best cheap video camera that is availabnle today...

Also, wanna know where I could find updates/news about cameras. You know, what new today is old yesterday... So just to know what is the latest at the moment... Thanks!

Answer
There are a few factors you will need to consider when you make a decision on the camera that you are looking at purchasing, primarily the best choice is usually what you have had luck with in the past, if you have had a particular model in the past which has been good, stick with it in the sense of the newer model available for the particular choices.

If money is no object or factors less determined in the consideration buy a Sony or a canon, these two choices are best for the optical side of the choices available; these models have good optics in the optical zoom sides of things and equally good systems in place to drive the high end optics.

Additionally another factor for consideration is the technology in general available , I would tend to point you in the direction of hdd or sd (hc) hybrid cameraâs as a choice due to the amount of recording you can do without the worry of tapes additionally with this in consideration of a media to use , another factor for hard drive or SD (hc) is that you will not have to worry about battery consumption as much and generally they have less moving parts and things which drain batteries , and less wear on heads lasers and other things which tend to make lives of cameraâs in general harder , another point is dv and mini DVD media have less room on the media , and usually have limited means to remove the media from the device.

If you have a good budget of around $1000 look at the Canon HV20 HDV Camcorder (http://www.dvconfidential.com/non-video/best-consumer-hd-camcorder-under-1000 )
Or the Sony Handycam HDR-SR12 (http://www.retrevo.com/samples/Camcorders-around-$1000.html )

If you have a budget of around $500 look at the

http://camcorders.about.com/od/digitalcamcordertoppicks/tp/Top-Camcorders-Under--500.htm
Panasonic SDR-H18 , Canon DC230 , Sony DVD308 , Sanyo Xacti E1

JVC and other well known models should be considered if you are looking for cheaper models , but expect more problems possibly down the track , and Sony handy cams are a good choice for mid range budgets.

Finally the best choices for the lower end would be the any of the svp T-series. (http://www.svpcam.com/ )

What is the best camcorder to take ghost hunting?

Ok so i need to know what is the best cam camcorder to take ghost hunting. I need one that has night vision and infrared. Also if there is anything else that can help me at night like another light to put on top of my cam corder. Where can i buy these cam corders and accessories. To take Ghost hunting.

Answer
There are very many different types and brands of video recording devices and camcorders you can invest in. Finding one is not that hard and you do not have to spend a whole lot of cash to get one to suit your needs. The higher end video cameras are not cheap. The Infrared and "FLIR" Forward Looking Infrared cameras are upwards of $1,200.00 and unless you can fork out that much it really is not necessary to buy one. There are types and brands that have night vision features and settings you can acquire for around the $300.00 range. Best Buy is a great place to go and test these cameras out. You can have a store clerk assist you and you can also compare between them. Any camera, digital and film , is capable of capturing activity. As long as you are recoding and have it on a setting that is appropriate for the environment you are just as likely to get it with an inexpensive camera than with a higher end one. I've upgraded to a Digital SLR Nikon D 60 (still) but actually have captured more activity on my Kodak easy share. Its more being in the right place at the right time with what ever you have at the time not necessarily the best equipment. Happy hunting.

What camcorder takes the best video in the dark?

C

I am trying to find a camcorder to buy for ghost hunting which requires being in the dark... What camera is the best quality dark shot?

Answer
Hi C!
I think its cool you're ghost hunting. It's been a passion of mine for the past 2 years. I work in an old school building that some suspect is haunted. I have taken some interesting video footage there and submitted it to some ghost video sites.
To get back to your question, I use the JVC GZ-HD300A Everio 60GB Hard Drive Camcorder. I've used other inferior cameras which are fine in the daylight but this cam has the best twilight and night mode out there.
Believe me, I know how it feels to miss a chance at filming something amazing because I don't have the right camera. You can find this camcorder at http://offto.net/onsalecom/ for a very competitive price.
Just search "camcorders" and click "JVC"
I got it from their site after shopping around. They shipped it quick and reliably and their customer service is excellent.
Good luck, and drop me a line and let me know if you catch anything paranormal on film.

All the best, Jimmy

What is the best Pro-sumer HD video camera on the market?

top camcorders for kids on ... Kids Digital Camcorder customer reviews - product reviews - read top
top camcorders for kids image

in4longhau

Just to start off, I've got a budget of around $500ish and I've been eying a Canon HF M52 and the M500, but I'm open for other suggestions.

The reason I'm asking is I'm filming a school play next month and I'll be selling Blu-ray discs this year. Last year, I used simple FlipHD cameras and they turned out decent, but I only sold standard DVDs. With me selling Blu-ray discs, using the FlipHD's in the conditions the play was in, just won't cut it.

A screencap from the FlipHD (last year), approximately 50ftish away from the stage.
http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/6686/uvs120517001.jpg

Obviously I'm looking for something that works good in the low light conditions, but will also do a better job on the facial details. If you notice the screencap I posted from the FlipHD, the kids faces were distorted and overly saturated. I want the kids and parents to be able to look back and watch this an be proud of the memory and the quality of the video, but without breaking my bank.

But here's another question...for those familiar with the Pro-sumer type cameras, does it even matter? Because of the conditions seen in the picture, short of buying a camera with a 4-figure+ price tag, would any 'pro-sumer' be a significant improvement over the FlipHD? Because I don't want to sink $500 in a camera and see only marginal improvement.

If you need any more info from me, let me know and I'll put an addendum to my post in response.
Hey Brian,

A DSLR certainly never crossed my mind. So you actually recommend the T3 over the M50 or M500 camcorders, quality wise? I've got a 40D, just wished I could use it to record video without having to tether it to the computer and turn Autofocus off. Basically rules the 40D out of the question. But I could definitely buy one without the lens to save money since I've already got lenses.

Because the T3 has an actual movie mode, I could set it and record right? And not have to fool with adjusting the Focus and stuff? And it's already set in the proper settings for HD recording right? Won't have to do any editing to achieve the proper 16:9 ratio?

Can the camera be plugged up and still record or can it only work on Battery? The show lasts for around 45 minutes, would hate for the battery to die before the end of the show.
I use Corel VideoStudio Pro X5 to do all my editing and disc burning.

Answer
"Works good in low light conditions" = large lens diameter and large imaging chip.

The frame grab you shared does not represent "low lighting" because the camera lens is pointed at the stage and good stage lighting works well. Only the far left top row three subjects would be considered "low lighting" (and perhaps the conductor's back).

In my opinion, the result you shared in the frame grab represents issues cause by at least two things:
1) high compression video capture/storage;
2) use of digital zoom.

The HF M series of consumer camcorders should serve you well as they have a lens diameter about 3x that of the flip and the imaging chip sized is about double that of the Flip. Also, the Optical zoom will provide a much better quality... a couple of tips: Capture in highest available video quality on the camcorder. The files will be large because the is less discarded video data.

I would not recommend using a dSLR for your stated purpose. In this case, if you are considering the T3i, download and read the manual.
http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/0/0300004720/02/eosrt3i-eos600d-im2-c-en.pdf
Specifically, you will find issues with prolonged use (longer than 15 minutes) of Live View or video capture. The cool-down period is not stated - but it is quite long. You will miss most of the performance. Pages 15, 139, 140, 164.

As well, there are file size limitations...
Page 151 (4 gig).

And the built-in mic is mono only - not stereo.
Page 291 ("Sound recording")
This means an external mic for stereo audio is required. There are many available.

dSLR cameras are designed to capture still images. Video (and audio) is a secondary "convenience feature". This does not mean that they cannot capture good video - they can, but they cannot be used like a camcorder...

And we don't know what you plan to use for editing. The captured file type is MOV and the video format in there is MPEG4 AVC/h.264.

To be clear, the Canon HF M series in the middles of the consumer grade camcorder range. The high end is the HF S series. a "prosumer" is closer to prograde... more like the Canon HF G series or XA series.

Answer
I googled this camcorder but couldn't find it so......

HOW TO DOWNLOAD
Things you should know about how to download all types of camcorders.

Mini dv camcorders (cassette) require a firewire connection, most computers do not come with one so you would have to buy a firewire card for your pc.
Minidvd have the worst quality, in order to get the video onto your computer, the minidvd must be finalized in the camcorder and then put in a top loading dvd burner and then converted. http://www.handbrake.fr/ or http://www.any-video-converter.com/download-avc-free.php free download
If you have a flash drive camcorder, you can download with a usb cord and supplied software or you can use an external usb card reader.
If you have a hard drive camcorder you can download with the supplied usb cord.

Anyone who knows a lot about camcorders (I have question(s))?

Bob

My mom gave me a samsung Q10 camcorder for christmas, but I have some question(s)......
Are all camcorders grainy at night when you record something with them? You mean to tell me even if I bought the most expensive camcorder in the world, there will still be grain in it?
Are there any camcorders that do NOT show grain when you are in low lite rooms?

Answer
Hi,
Unfortunately, all cheap cameras will record a lot of noise (aka grain) when you record low light. This is something I have experienced a lot as, like you, I am a low budget movie maker. I have never used a Q10, but I believe it is generally in the price bracket of £100-200, so for that you cannot expect a great low light quality video. However, if you are crafty you can get round this. I suggest you record is a bright daylight (as natural as possible), set your white balance to something orangey-brown (packing paper or a brown envelope perhaps); if you do not know how to white balance, check it in the cameras instructions and the idea is to make the orange-brown paper look white on your camera, and then everything else in the video should look very blue. When you put it on you computer, you can change the video brightness and contrast in your editing software at make it look like it was shot at night, or in the dark. On top of this, some software packages come with noise reduction effects, and these can be quite helpful.

In answer to you second question, upper end video cameras will be less noisy. If you are looking to invest money in a bigger, better camera I would suggest you look at DSLRs, as these can record very good quality full HD videos, and of cause all the different lenses allow you to shoot with different DoFs, etc. I use a Nikon D5100, and it is very good in low light.

If you want anymore help, I am currently making a youtube vid that covers all the low budget cinematography tips I can think of. It should be on my youtube channel (youtube.com/munnbrice) by the end of January 2012.

Best Camcorder for my price range as of 6/9/2011?

best camcorder june 2011 image

As of June 9, 2011, what is the best camcorder for around $300, give or take $50.

Keep in mind:
-No flip cameras please
-I am an amateur film maker
-I want to shoot music videos
-Shoot short films
-Even in the hands of the shakiest person, the film is still smooth, and clear.
-Able to shoot in very lowlight areas
-Please tell me if the camera you suggested has a mic input or not

I was looking at the Samsung HMX-H300, but give me your opinions on what you think the best camera that's bang for my buck. (as of today)
I forgot to add:
-If the camcorder has the ability to take pictures, it's a plus. (Not needed though)

Answer
Consumer level HD camcorders have 3 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes - all times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

With a MiniDV tape camcorder, record 60 or 90 minutes ( camcorder settings), 90 seconds or less to change a tape and record for 60 or 90 more and repeat till you run out of tapes.

You can get a Canon ZR960 for $250. It is a MiniDV tape camcorder, has a Mic jack. You need a firewire (IEEE1394) card ($25 to 30) for the computer and a firewire cable (less than 10) to be able to transfer video to your computer. To say this is not HD, think about this. It would cost in excess of $3500 to get a HD camcorder that could equal the video Quality of a $250 Canon MiniDV tape camcorder.

The 2hr battery charges full time but it only lasts about 7mins. How do I fix this? DO NOT TELL ME TO GET A NEW CAMERA. I'm 14 and its the only camera i can afford. I love being able to pull out the vhs tape and go strait to the tv without uploading or burning a disk. How do I fix this I want to record the super moon tomorrow.

Please don't make fun of me, I have already had comments such as "Here comes channel 10.".

Answer
Hi "N.A.":

First, you only need to ask a Y!A Question once. Not three times in a hour in the same Category. All the Y!A regulars check the unanswered Questions list. Learn some patience; you're probably still asleep right now. There's still twelve hours til the "super moon" comes up. [And guess what? The moon's coming back up on Sunday night, too! Betcha can't tell the difference.]

And there will be a "super moon" next year (June 23), just like last year: http://www.space.com/11178-supermoon-photos-2011-skywatcher-images.html

Fellow Contributor "AV Daddy" has given the most-practical advice on one of your other Q&A's on this topic: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AmpyZmYVvfBNxCv7LVOvTa6SHwx.;_ylv=3?qid=20110210042937AAK6CVa [Use an extension cord & power the camera from the charger. I'd add "Take the bad battery out, so it doesn't load-down the power supply."]

Second, on your other two Questions, you don't need to YELL in all caps. That piece of courtesy is older than the internet (I come from the old dial-up BBS community days.) We could tell you were "14" without you even telling us. Don't act like a little screaming kid, and you won't get treated like one.

Third, feel free to use the "Additional Details" link to tell us exactly what model # RCA VHS Camcorder it is (it's on the bottom plate where the tripod mounts). And what the exact model # is on the "charger" unit. Some folks (like me) actually owned and worked on those camcorders back then, and can tell you if the charger can be used as an external power supply (with an extension cord) to get you through your project tonight.

And stick around for the meteor shower caused by Halley's Comet debris, after you're done staring at the moon. "Super moon" will hit actual perigee & fullness around 11:35p EDT, but the atmosphere & optical illusions will make it look redder & "bigger" at moonrise (just after 7:45p EDT). If you get clouds, then set your alarm for 5am and watch it set in the west.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

Need Help Choosing the best damn camera/recorder i can afford.?

Nunya

I am looking for a good video recorder/camera all in one. My price range is 100-250 dollars(maybe 300 if its really worth it). My purpose for this is to make home videos of my 2 kids and me, family get together s, nature walks, just all around record and picture everything pretty much. I want the video/sound/(picture) to be the best money can buy in my price range. I am ignorant when it comes to tech specs on these types of things and really need help investing my money into something that will last me and my kids and their kids a lifetime of all the awesome memories that we will have acquired . My number one concern is video/audio, not so much pictures because i will be recording just about everything (if the video is awesome then the pictures should be to). I know it would be something else to just sit back on my couch 30 years from now and watch my 2 kids grow up all over again over the videos that i have recorded.

Thanks,
-Tim

P.s. Post links with your replies if you have any.
Which camera would you buy?

http://tinyurl.com/bewapla

Answer
Hi Tim:

Get ready for the first part of your lessons in "shopping for video": your current budget is at the bare-bones bottom of the price range.

And since almost everything made for consumers is plastic with Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) screens which crack easily (not to mention those with breakable hinges), I don't think you'll find anything "that will last me and my kids... a lifetime." The memories stored on YouTube or DVDs might last, but the camera probably won't.

If you have small children, you might consider something in the pocket-cam "candy bar" form factor (this is what iPhones, Flip cams, Kodak PlaySports, etc. are called). Flips aren't made anymore, but you can still find Kodak PlaySport & PlayTouch shockproof & waterproof models in the $80-$200 price range. (Kodak's going out of the photo gadget business, but these discontinued models are still a good purchase.)

To stretch your budget, manufacturers like Canon offer factory refurbished models at a huge discount. See Canon USA's online store: http://shop.usa.canon.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/subCategory_10051_10051_-1_17252

JVC and Toshiba make decent, affordable models. I prefer JVC over Toshiba, when it comes to camcorders in the low-price range. Your local WalMart carries both these brands.

Personally, I've had good luck buying good used video gear on eBay (and the occasional flea market), but I've been dealing in used electronics & optics for a long time. I've been able to spend $20-$50 on digital camcorders (Sony, Canon, & JVC) that were $500-$1200 when new a few years ago. (Just don't buy any "mini-DVD" camcorders; not to be confused with "MiniDV" which is a good cassette format.)

My top tips for you:
1) Since you mostly want videos and not photos, don't buy a "point & shoot" camera-looking gadget (like a Nikon Coolpix or Fuji Finepix). You'll be disappointed in the video & sound "features".

2) Ignore "Digital Zoom" and only look for "Optical Zoom" (typically 3x to 20x). Some "candy bar" camcorders don't zoom at all, but that just makes them easier to use and cheaper to buy. Try a Sony Bloggie, if you can't find a Kodak PlaySport or PlayTouch.

3) Shy away from anything that uses "AAA" size mini-penlight batteries. First, they're junk imports. And second, the battery life stinks (even if you try rechargeables). Jazz, DXG, and Polaroid are 3 junk brands to avoid. Vivitar also makes cheap models that aren't worth the money.

4) Make sure your computer (PC or Mac) is compatible with either the "bundled software" (for editing and sharing) or that the "video format" (like AVCHD) actually =can= be edited by your computer. Consumer HD video takes a LOT of "horsepower" to edit properly. Camcorders that can shoot both "standard def" (VGA 640x480) and "HiDef" are more versatile to edit & share.

5) Spend a quiet afternoon or evening at a good local camera store. (Saturdays are not ideal.) Talk to the experts behind the counter (they know tons more than any Best Buy "associate"). Be honest with your budget, but still get some "hands-on" time with various models & features. Even those beyond your price range with give you a feel for quality & what to expect in a good camcorder.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

What should I look for in a camcorder for filmmaking?

best camcorders budget image

Hawkinator

I'm kinda knew to this, I'm a student filmmaker and am look to buy my first camcorder. My budget isn't too high, under 1,000. I can definately pay 500 but anything higher than 750 is probably pushing it. I just want to know what are somethings i should look for in buying a camcorder. Also, I will be editing these on a PC using Windows Movie Maker.

Answer
Mic jack. Manual audio control.

Canon HV40 (if your computer has a firewire port) or HF S100 (if your computer has no firewireport).

And get Sony Vegas. It can deal with either the HDV or MTS files from the above camcorders. MovieMaker cannot.

You will also want a tripod (don't go cheap - you never want to shoot handheld). The Sunpak 7500TM is an OK consumer-grade tripod.

Invest in an optional high capacity battery or two from the camcorder manufacturer. And a case (Pelican 1500) and maybe a video light (Dot Line DV-60) and camera bracket (Bescor VB-50) and a shotgun mic (NRG Research SA-568).

Which one is the best camcorder I should buy?

I am looking to buy a camcorder. My budget is arround 300 dollar. Which one should I buy? Please advise.

Answer
I reccommend Flip UltraHD Camcorder.
If you're looking for a video camera for casual use that has great portability and picture quality, look no further. This little gadget fits comfortably in your pocket, and is as easy to use as a toaster.

The video quality is outstanding for such a little device, although the digital zoom lowers the quality, so I would suggest using that feature sparingly.

As far as battery life and charging goes, this camera really shines. It charges by simply plugging it into a USB port on your computer. If you want a quicker charge, I would recommend investing in the cable which allows you to charge it in an electrical outlet instead. My one concern with this flip USB jack is that since it is connected to the camera, as opposed to being attached by a cord, it feels like it could very easily snap off if bumped into while charging.

Answer
If you have a mini dv (cassette) camcorderâ¦.
Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder. Make sure your camera is in playback mode.
The fine print in your manual makes reference to firewire (ieee 1394) connection.

If you have a mini dvd camcorderâ¦.
You will have to finalize your dvd in the camera and then put the dvd in your computer's DVD burner (top loading only) and then you will have to convert the files (I downloaded handbrake file converter free) and import them into your editing program. Use the HELP feature in your editing program to learn about editing. Once you are ready to burn, your project will be burned to a different DVD and you can file the original away.

If you have an analog (VHS) camcorderâ¦
You need an analog converter, either internal card or external such as the dazzle. It's very easy to use and come with good software. You would hook your analog VHS camera or VCR to the analog converter, the dazzle and then hook the dazzle to your PC. The dazzle cost around 70.00 , but worth the money if you have a lot of VHS to tapes to convert.

**Please Note There is no 8mm or Hi 8 to VHS Adapter that currently exsists. This type of VHS Adapter only exsists with VHS-C tape**

Answer
Apple MacBook Pro by far! The MacBook Pro has been updated with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, along with more RAM and hard drive storage. I have the top-of-the-line 17-inch model, a thing of beauty clad in sleek aluminum.

Still only one-inch thin, the MacBook Pro also remains one of the lightest notebooks and it does come with a 15.4-inch widescreen display. This 5.6-pound notebook is excellent for home or office use but is portable and compact enough to take on the road.

Using the MacBook Pro is a pleasure, and it didnât take me too long to fall in love with the 17 inch screen, whose optional glossy treatment is perfect for watching movies. The notebook comes with an infrared, six-button remote, so you can enjoy movies from across the room.

I like the MagSafe Power Adapter, which disconnects from the notebook if you trip over the cord. For this model, Apple added the MagSafe Airline Adapter, which uses the same concept but connects to an in-seat power port (a $59 option, not included). The MacBook Proâs illuminated keyboard and motion-sensor technology for protecting the hard drive help make this a solid pick for business travelers.

The big improvement is the upgrade from Intelâs 2.16-GHz Core Duo processor to a 2.33-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Like the previous CPU, the Core 2 Duo has two processing cores, but now each chip has 4MB of shared L2 cache. That cache allows the Core 2 Duo to store more data nearby so that it makes fewer passes to the main memory.

Speaking of memory, Appleâs computers have long been RAM weaklings, with standard configurations that paled next to their Windows counterparts, but Apple corrected that nicely. The 2.33-GHz 15-inch MacBook Pro comes with 2GB of 667-MHz DDR2 SDRAM standard, twice that of the previous version. I maxed out the system with 3GB of RAM, for an extra $575. Thatâs overkill for all but the most demanding power users like myself - I run my home network from it.

I downloaded the free Mac BootCamp, which enables Macs to run Windows XP. http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/

Productivity performance was decent. I suspect this may be due to the fact that Windows uses only a small partition of the MacBook Proâs hard drive (although you can set it to use more) and that Boot Camp itself has some performance overhead. BEWARE that using this now opens the MAC to the same malware attacks as the PC'ers are experiencing.

I ran MobileMark to test the battery life, the MacBook Proâs battery lasted 2 hours and 53 minutes with Wi-Fi off, compared with the average runtime of 3:41 for mainstream notebooks. I also ran a DVD rundown test and got 2 hours and 58 minutes with Wi-Fi on (compared with 3 hours and 5 minutes on the13.3-inch MacBook). Thatâs a decent runtime considering the larger size of this display, but the bottom line is that you should go with the slower (and cheaper) 2.16-GHz processor if you want more endurance.

Wireless antenna strength is supposed to no longer be a problem with Appleâs high-end notebooks, but I noticed a weaker signal with this MacBook Pro than with one of my other Mac's desktop in the same location. Compared with my Toshiba notebook, the MacBook Pro wasnât too far off with scores of 12.6 Mbps at 15 feet and 9.6 at 50 feet.

What do you think of the Sony HDR-XR520V Handycam® camcorder?

I'm looking to purchase a good HD Hard Disk Drive camcorder. I'm a Sony fan, but there are several options out there. Should I instead look into purchasing a Canon (Flash Memory) camcorder? What's better, Hard Disk Drive --or-- Flash Memory?

Answer
Short answer: Flash Memory.

Long answer:
With the known limitations consumer hard disc drive camcorders have with vibration/shock and altitude, challenges archiving the video and huge expense recovering data from crashed hard drives, I no longer recommend hard disc drive camcorders.

Flash memory camcorders use the same highly compressed file types so if you must, then flash memory is better between the two. Check the Sony HDR-CX500 series or Canon HF or HF S series camcorders.

Please keep in mind that video compression = discarded video data = reduced video quality. Also, if you are expecting to edit that video, you will need an editor that can deal with AVCHD/MTS files. There is nothing useful in the box with the camcorder and if you are running Windows/Vista, MovieMaker cannot deal with MTS files (Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere float to the top. Macs have iMovie '08 or newer that can deal with AVCHD/MTS files (or FinalCut).

If you want best available video quality, then you need least compression applied to the video data stream. That continues to be DV and HDV format - and for consumer camcorders, that means miniDV tape. Canon HV40. It also happens to be the least expensive camcorder available with a mic jack and manual audio control. Since we are here... Check what the bigger dogs use...

Sony HDR-FX7, HDR-FX1000, HVR-Z1, HVR-Z5, HVR-Z7
Canon XH series, XLH series
Panasonic AG-HVX200
JVC GY-HM series

Most are miniDV tape. Those which are flash memory save to DV/HDV format - not anemic AVCHD (except the Panny - it saves to DVCPRO HD onto P2 cards). There are no prosumer or pro-grade camcorders with internal hard drives. The external hard drives (Sony and Focus Enhancements FireStore) save to DV/HDV.

best camcorders for mac image

Tom K.

I've connected the camcorder to the Mac using the USB port, but I am unable to access the camera. I tried using iMovie to no success. When I was using a PC I was able to access the camera and transfer the movies. I was hoping to be able to do the same with the Apple. The main reason I purchased the Mac was for the ease of editing and creating DVDs.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Answer
you must install a mac driver for your camera if you opt to use the usb port. if you cannot find a driver, you will need to use the firewire port.

How is the quality of your videos transferred from a camcorder to your Mac/PC?

cipeciop

Yesterday I have started transferring my videos from my digital camcorder to my Mac using Pinnacle Video Capture. The quality is not that good (not as good as when I watch them on my TV) and the sound doesn't follow the image. Is it normal? Could I have a problem with my cables?

Answer
Still got the Footage or Rendered file on you Hard drive? If so, Upgrade your computer, go get one or both of the programs and put the file back on the Timeline and remove the audio. Not hard to do with either program, lots of help on YouTube for both programs also.

Pinnacle Studio 14 HD Ultimate & Sony Vegas Pro 10

Screen Shot, Top Picture - http://asimplelife.ca/nle.html Upgrade your computer to AVCHD specs below and you can run both programs seen on my Web Page on your computer. Just Rejig the search term below in the YouTube search, from the instructions below.

This is not a program that can run on any computer, see below -

If interested, link below takes you to the site, but you can get this $80 program for free. Do this by opening a web browser, surfing over to YouTube. Once there, in the search box on that site, enter 'Pinnacle Studio 14' or âSony Vegas Pro 10â. Youâre looking for free download, find a link or video that says that, in the video description, there will be link for a free download. Which Memory card should I get for my DSLR when recording video?

Rebel Alli

I received a Canon Rebel T4i/650d as a gift and I want to use it mainly for taking video. I want to avoid getting the error "movie recording has stopped automatically" since my friends have encountered it. What SD Card should I buy? What size, how many MBs, what class and does the brand matter? Also could you explain why the error happens? Is it because of the camera's sensor, battery or does it stop recording solely because of the memory card?

Answer
I agree with Jim A about SDHC Class 10 - preferably with a high write speed like the Sandisk Extreme cards. I disagree about using multiple cards. What's the point of splitting your video over 2 smaller cards. If one card fails you've only got 1/2 a video, which is pretty much useless. SD cards do fail, so it's good to have a backup, but I've never had one fail on me yet. If you are that concerned about failure take a hard drive backup device with you.

The difference in cost between 8GB, 16GB and 32GB means I rarely buy less than 16GB these days and usually 32GB. The combination of raw files and video can fill a 16GB card pretty quickly.

For video I wouldn't use a DSLR anyway. A proper camcorder would give you proper power-zoom which no DSLR can do. It would also be less likely to record camera noises such as AF. The AF on camcorders is usually smoother and faster and doesn't hunt as much. DSLRs are really not the best tool for shooting video. Why spend out on a 16 megapixel sensor when 1080p only needs 2MP?

Most DSLRs won't allow you to video for more than 30 minutes without a break whatever card you use. First of all the file systems on the cards are 32bit, so don't allow more than 4GB in a single file. Secondly there seems to be a lot of speculation that there are additional EU import duties if the camera can record more than about 30 minutes in a single go because then it is treated as a video camera. The third thing is keeping a sensor live for that length of time can cause overheat problems. Most top-end DSLRs can cope with that but cheaper ones may restrict maximum record length even further to ensure it's not a problem.

is there a wireless mic that is compatible with the flip camera?

Answer
Nope....A wireless mic would need the wireless transmitter connected to the camcorder's microphone input port.

To get external wired mic'd audio to you video, the work around is to use a separate recording device like a voice recorder and mate the audio to your videos in post. You can even use your desk top computer or laptop and record audio with a wired mic that way too.

Samsontech.com has a new Zoom H1 recorder to be released in July 2010.

Everything about warped tour?

theunmotiv

I will be attending warped tour this year for the first time, and have many questions.

What is the average age of those attending?
How early should I get there?
How much money should I bring?
What should I wear?
What should I bring?
What should I expect?
How friendly are people there?
Do you have any awesome stories from the warped tour?
How long does it go?

Just tell me everything you experienced or whatnot. Thanks!

Answer
Warped Tour is essentially an all-age tour. I've seen people as young as 5 and as old as 60 attend.

Because this is a general admission show (there are no assigned seats!) you may want to get in line early. This is also because the band schedule (what time every band plays and at what stage) is not created and announced until the day of the show. So, you may want to get in line maybe 30 minutes to an hour before doors open. Once you arrive at doors and get in, find your way to a large, red blow-up schedule; this shows you the bands that will play at what stage and at what time. Bring a piece of paper and pen to write down all the bands you want to see, what stage they will be playing at and at what time. However, though there are only about 6 main stages, there are around 5 "unofficial" stages (for example, the Kevin Says Stage) that the blow up schedule does not have on there, so keep an eye out for those.

Bring enough money for food, water, and merch. Food will easily run you up to $10, water about $3 per bottle, and merch: t-shirts $10-$20, hoodies $25-45, shorts $20-30. From my experiences, Warped Tour is known for slightly cheaper band merchandise. I usually bring around $100, but I know others who bring more. Please make sure you keep your money in a safe place. Some Warped Tour attendees will not hesitate to snatch your personal belongings from an open pocket.

You should wear something that you feel completely comfortable in, and something you do not mind getting dirty. Please, no flipflops, bikini swimsuits, anything atrocious and that can easily be pulled off. Make sure to find out if the venue for your date is outdoor; the majority of Warped Tour shows are held at outdoor venues, but double check. Assuming that your venue will be outdoor, shorts, a tank top or tshirt, and sneakers should be fine. Bring sunglasses and a hat if you have them.

Bring SUNSCREEN AND WATER. 2010 will be my 6th year attending, and I cannot stress this enough. I have seen too many people pass out because of high amounts of sun exposure and dehydration. Please bring a bottle of water and continuously keep hydrated. Bring sun block and continue to re-apply every hour. The sun can be extremely harsh especially mixed in with the humidity a large amount of people gathered in one place can create and the fact that its the summer. Also make sure to bring a point and shoot camera, (NOT an SLR, a camera with a detachable lens, or a camcorder. These are restricted from Warped Tour).

Expect to have fun.

People are pretty friendly. This is an amazing opportunity to meet people who enjoy the same music as you do, and aren't there to judge.

I have so many great experiences from the past shows i've attended.

Warped Tour is a tour that takes place for the entire day; it usually begins around 10am and completely ends around 10pm. However, you can arrive and leave at any time you wish.

Have your camera ready, because you never know who you will see just walking around. Stay hydrated and have fun!
