What is a good USB camcorder for a macbook?

best camcorders on the market 2011 image
Q. I have a current generation macbook, not macbook pro. I have no firewire but i want to get high quality video onto my mac. I'm not talking a Flip video camera, I'm talking a real camcorder that I can fit a fisheye lens onto. I can't spend thousands of dollars, so being told about a professional video camera won't help me

Answer
You can buy a real camcorder under $500 in the market. To transfer high quality video onto your
Mac, there is no alternative to firewire.

You can buy a firewire PCMCIA adapter for your Macbook to use it with firewire camcorder. Detail instruction goes here http://www.firewirecamera.org/2011/01/firewire-pcmcia-adapter.html

Price Drop in VIXIA Camcorders Approaching New Release?

AKolb

I'm looking to buy a camcorder in the VIXIA line, and noticed that the new versions tend to be released in January of each year (correct me if I am wrong).

Now I plan on buying one from amazon.com, which already has drastic price cuts on them, but I was wondering if they will go down any more as they try to clear out stock for the new models in 2011.

Can anybody tell me if prices at amazon.com of this series might drop any further, or if I could just go ahead and get one now? I don't have a problem with the price, but if they got lower I wouldn't mind waiting.

Thanks!

Answer
It's hard to know what amazon will do with older models when new releases come in. But you can place a item on your Wish List and you will get a red/yellow warning notice if that item has increased or decreased in price since you placed in on your list. But there is no way of knowing the future of that item.

But it can be extremely frustrating when trying to chose a camcorder knowing that a newer model is coming out. But sometimes the newer releases (of the same model) are not always well sought after. A couple of examples: Canon VIXIA HV40 is the latest model camcorder of the HV series (HV20, HV30, and now HV40). But the only deference between the HV30 and HV40 is that the HV40 can record at 24fps. Many users and shoppers feel that the price deference between the two isn't worth the 24fps so they save money buying the HV30. Another example is the Canon G11 (digital camera) which is the latest step up from the G10. But the G10 is a better camera and even costs more than the G11. My understanding is that there was some kind of change in the manufacturing process (parts, labor, etc..) that prompted a change, thus a downgrade. Some say the G10 was just too expensive for the targeted market (users). You will need just to weigh what is most important to you between current models and future models.

what is the best camcorder to use at a rock concert but isnt too expensive?

Dalia

i want a camcorder that doesnt sound shitty when im recording something at a concert. one that in when you watch the video, you actually can hear the music not just the bass. it really doesnt matter what kind of camcorder it is as long it has good audio and isnt too expensive.

Answer
For loud audio, manual audio gain control is needed. For low-end camcorders, most do not have any audio control or if they have an audio control, it is a very basic "attenuator" or "normal" option in the menu. As the camcorder increases in price, the manual audio control gets better - from a 10-12 step control in the menu to a thumbwheel on the outside of the camcorder.

The exception to this is the Sampson/Zoom Q3 and Q3HD that started as portable digital audio recording devices that had a small camera added later. With the small lens and imaging chip, the low light video won't be so good (and zoom is very limited) but the audio can be great.

How is a pendulum used for time keeping? On what mechanism is time keeping based in clocks without a pendulum?

Answer
You may be able to produce a time track for an event by using a camcorder with a clock in the background (with a continuous seconds sweep hand and a suitable distance scale for reference).

A pendulum clock keeps exact time because a pendulum swings at a precise time interval because of its length under the action of gravity. The pendulum bob constantly converts potential energy (of height) to kinetic energy (of motion) at the top and bottom of each swing, respectively. An escape mechanism permits the clock to add back a tiny amount of energy from a weight and pulley each swing to make up for energy lost due to friction and wind resistance. A separate weight and pulley actuates the chimes.

Electric clocks use electric motors that rotate a precise amount each minute, etc. when supplied with 60 cycle electricity. Power stations must keep track of the total cycles each day and add or subtract a few cycles as necessary to keep all clocks running together (except when there is a power loss!).

Windup clocks use a powerful spring to store energy and an escape movement to slowly release the energy driving the clock mechanism. The escape movement may include a rotating hair spring that oscillates back and forth at an accurately regulated pace.

NEX-VG10 Sony Handycam (Interchangeable Lens) ?

top interchangeable lens camcorders on 1991 original price 298000 yen lens construction group 10 lens ...
top interchangeable lens camcorders image

lacrosse32

Hey I have been searching for some good camcorders for consumer/prosumer level and I found the NEX-VG10 and I was wondering if anyone has used it and what they thought of it. Also is it compatible with macs? Thanks a lot!

Answer
The NEX-VG10 is merely a high compression AVCHD cam that happens to have an interchangeable lens system.

Pros:
Interchangeable lens system.
On the top of the handle, lift the cover - there is one Sony proprietary Active interface shoe and on standard cold shoe. Interesting - I could see a video light mounted to the AIS and a wireless mic portable base station in the standard shoe.

Cons:
AVCHD compression.
Single CMOS imaging chip - though it is a pretty good size (2.88", I think) it is not a 3CCD or 3CMOS array.
XLR mics require an XLR adapter (juicedLink or BeachTek - there are others)
The "handle" (on top) is connected to the camcorder in a way that there is no real comfortable way to carry the camcorder by it.
The internal mics are too close to where one would be carrying the camcorder so any hand movement caused audio will be picked up by the mic elements. External mics are definitely a must.

Mac compatibility will depend n the hardware and editing application you plan to use. Final Cut Express 4 on a current Mac and current version OSX should be fine to Log and Capture. In theory, should work fine with iMovie '09 or '11, too.

The NEX-VG10 is basically the flash memory version of the HDR-HC1, HVR-A1U mixed with the HDR-CX550... If you are planning to spend that kind of $ for a primary camcorder, save just a bit longer and check the HDR-FX1000 for a primary. The NEX-VG10 would be a fine secondary camcorder used with the FX1000 or HVR-Z7.

which camera do you suggest?

which camera will you suggest would be excellent for shooting HD quality cinema movie.
I am working for a cinema , and my company is willing to buy camera , bit confused, i need a camera which will be reasonable price and output hd quality picture quality. I personally like canon xl h1, need more suggestion please.
I am looking for a video camera for shooting cinema not tv serial or ads

Answer
If you're into cameras such as the XL H1, then you're most likely looking for a more conventional camera. If you want a shoulder mount, go for the Sony EX3, with the EX1 being the handheld equivalent. Sony also has the new interchangeable lens camcorders, but I don't have any experience with those. The Sony EX3 would be my top recommendation.

Check camcorderinfo.com... and do everyone a favor - ditch the hard drive camcorder and get flash memory or miniDV tape instead.

What type of digital camcorder should I buy and why?

Brandon

Be very descriptive as to price, where to get it, and especially WHY I should choose that one. I have a 5 mos old baby who is about to have a ton of firsts. That said, obviously for that reason budget is tight. Let me know for my situation what I should do!!

Answer
There is nothing quite like capturing your childs first steps on a video camera. His or her first Birthday, as they basically plaster a cake all over their face and your furniture. Obviously, you will want to preserve these priceless memories for years to come. One of the most import aspects of selecting a Video Camera is the media you plan to archieve these priceless memories on. Some say, the way to ensure the best quality video for years to come is tape (more specifically MiniDV). I am not entirely sold on tape, considering I purchased a "TOP OF THE LINE" Sony HI-8 Camcorder when my first child was born. Now I have 100 plus hours of wonderful video, and a camcorder on it's last legs. I recently purchased a 750 GB external harddrive and am beginning to transfer the video to the computer. Approximately 120 hours of work in the transfer, and probably another 120 hours to transfer to DVD's to be stored in a fire proof safe deposit box along with the tapes. If someone told me, I could own a HI-8 video player that would last forever, and I could transfer these precious memories with out a glitch 25+ years from now, I wouldn't even go down this road of transfering my memories to the computer. You are probably wondering why I am telling you this story? Why don't I just give you an answer to your question? My logic here is to get you to think about the long-term impacts on your time and energy before you make a selection.

Here is my logic for reducing the impacts of video archiving.
Purchase a media with the highest digital data retention you can afford (HD - High Definition). Transfer the data as quickly as you can, preserving the maximum quality you can in the transfer - Using harddrive or solid state "flash memory" then burn to the highest capacity discs - such as blu-ray discs to be archived and protected from damage. Use the information of the computer harddrive to create wonderful DVD's for grandparents and other family members, and keep your archive data for transferring to the next storage media change 20+ years from now.

With all that said - go buy the Sony "Hybrid" HDR-SR11 with 60GB HDD and Flash Memory Slot recording ability. Cost $1199 at Crutchfields.com. This camcorder records in AVCHD format, and can be transfered quickly from Flash Memory to your Computer Harddrive and then burned to Blu-ray media. Further the AVCHD looks great on the new HD TV's. Maybe not quite as good as MiniDV's in the HDV format, but you can get there quicker, and I can barely see the difference. This camcorder will serve your needs well.

For a more budget friendly high definition product - look at Samsungs new HMX-10 HD "Flash media" Camera. $549. If this is too much to afford - Go with a MiniDV camcorder for the time being, and just plan on spending more time than money in the process of archiving your data. Sony DCR-HC38 Mini DV Camcorder is at just under $250 - Standard Definition.

Also, go out and buy a very good Camera. Prosumer grade camera and lenses preferred - shoot the best photos you can, and have them printed with great ink and paper. Take lots of digital pictures, and make 2 hard "prints" of your favorite shots (those that capture the moments best, and that you enjoy the most), using 100+ year inks and paper. Put one copy in your achieve (damage protected) and make photo albums out of the other. I assure you, these photo albums will be the priceless keepsakes you and your family will enjoy for generations to come.

Happy Memory Making!

Canon EOS Rebel T2i 18 MP CMOS APS-C Digital SLR Camera with 3.0-Inch LCD and EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens
http://7thingsdigital.com/2010/04/20/canon-eos-rebel-t2i-18-mp-cmos-aps-c-digital-slr-camera-with-3-0-inch-lcd-and-ef-s-18-55mm-f3-5-5-6-is-lens/

Review: You can't get better than this for under $1000

I'm a frequent upgrader and loyal Canon fan. I traded up from an XSi last year to the T1i, and now this year to the T2i. I was within days of ordering the 7D until they announced the T2i, with all the features I wanted from the 7D at half the cost. I immediately pre-ordered the T2i and have been having some fun with it over the last 24 hours. The verdict so far? I am in love with this SLR.

I believe the last few iterations in the Rebel series have been comparable in quality. The T2i shares much of the same pros and cons with its predecessors, and ultimately, not too much has really changed. That said, the very minor things that did change were huge to me. I'm big into video, which is what got me looking into the 7D. Both the 7D and the T2i have the stereo audio input jack. My T1i just had the built-in mono mic which was unacceptable for someone who is doing more than home videos with this camera. So that feature, along with full manual control of video recording (not available in T1i), and 1080/24p (and 30p if that's your preference) makes this a common sense upgrade if you're serious about video. 720p/60 is also really cool for the silky smooth framerate, although I personally find the movie-like feel of 24p video best.

As for what the camera is really made for, still photography, it is still the king at (in the mid-entry-level DSLR class). 18 megapixels really, truly is more than any person really needs. My XSi from a couple years back met all my needs with 12mp, however, 18 creates for even better bragging rights to the general public. "How many megapixies is that thingy? Eighteen? OMG! You are such a pro!" Anyway, back on track now. The noise levels in most photos I've taken are pretty decent for 18 megapixels. It's comparable to the noise on the 15MP T1i from what I've experienced so far. 6400 ISO is now a default option instead of an expanded setting (12800 ISO still is), which is nice to have, though you'll hopefully never have to use it.

The kit lens is of course the same old 18-55 I've bought practically 5 times over now. A great budget lens and excellent value, but I absolutely can't go back to using it after buying some of the better lenses Canon has to offer. If the money's there, you will not regret investing another few hundred dollars some better glass. Otherwise, the 18-55 is a great lens to start out with.

Only major complaint I have is the white balance in incandescent lighting still isn't as accurate as I'd like. I also wish they kept the same LP-E5 battery so the two I already have would be compatible with both of my cameras. And a nitpick, the "Rebel" name is stupid, to be completely honest. It should be named "550D" as it is in the Europe market. SDXC support is cool, but I can't really comment on it as I'll be using SDHC cards for the foreseeable future. Oh, and the slightly redesigned buttons are a welcome change. A little more ergonomic than before.

In conclusion, if you're thinking about upgrading from a T1i, there isn't really a compelling reason to unless you are okay spending hundreds just for the sake of having the latest in gadgetry (what I do), UNLESS you are in it for the video support, which is AMAZING at this price point. You used to have to spend at least a couple thousand on a professio

I am going to Florida by tour bus..we will be traveling 9 hours the first day and 5 hours the following day. What should I bring with me on the bus to stay comfortable and not die of boredom?!

Answer
Take a portable DVD player (I usually just take my laptop cause it is the same size as a small DVD player and I can do a lot more with it), watch some movies. Listen to music, radio, CD player, tape, MP3. Take a long some video games or electronic games. There are lots of varieties, see what interests you the most.

Get one of those laptop pillows. The bottom feels kind of like a bean bag, but the top is hard like a desk so you can work on it. Take color books (age?) crossword puzzels, word searches, sudoku puzzels, etc. Bring a long a couple of books to read. Take magazines, school work, etc. Go to the library or book store and look for roadtrip books. I used to have one when I was a kid that was so much fun. It was filled with fun activities and games to do while I a road trip. Search online, there are lots of activities recommended online that would be fun. Some favorites are license plate bingo (mark off license plates from different states as you pass them, first one to make a row wins). Play nature bingo, or street sign bingp (same rules as license plate, just with street signs or birds, grass, etc.) Play the alphabet game (Pick a subject, i.e. fruit and one person starts with the letter a they say apple, next person says apple and then something with a b, bannana. This keeps going on, as you miss a word you lose. Last person remaining wins.)

You can always take some food a long as well. Always good to keep you entertained. Take a camera or camcorder and record the trip as you go. It will bring back lots of memories later and you will be glad you did. Take a notebook and keep a journal of your vacation.

Bring along a travel book of your destination and plan some things to do while on your trip. Or look over what you are already planning to do.

I hope this gives you some ideas. There really are a lot of things you can do while on a road trip. Just a little creativity will take you a long way.

Any suggestions on a video camera?

How long before this camera is considered obsolete?

My son is a high school senior. Next year he wants to go to community college and live at home (at least that is reasonably affordable) instead of going away to school. He wants to take an expensive major however. Video production. We have been able to save about $5,000 towards his education. We are not wealthy people. The rest will have to come from loans and maybe a grant or scholarship.
We are looking at some "entry level" pro cameras in the $1500-1800 range. That's about 1/3 of our savings for his education.
Models include these:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/518555-REG/Sony_HVRHD1000U_HVR_HD1000U_Digital_High_Definition.html
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/745707-REG/Sony_HXR_MC2000U_HXR_MC2000U_Shoulder_Mount_AVCHD.html

and
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/749467-REG/Canon_4922B002_XA10_HD_Professional_Camcorder.html

My concern is he starts September 2013 so these products may not even be available by then or others will be available. We hope he graduates May 2015. He tells us when he graduates he will maybe find a freelance job or shoot local cable news, build up some experience, maybe after 2 years go for a B.A. at least part time.
Is anything we buy him in 2013 (summer) going to be any use to him as a working professional in 2015 (summer)? So let's say you are a class of 2012 graduate with an AAS in video production. The camera you purchased in the summer of 2010 when you first started, do you still use it professionally? Can you make anything doing freelance news videos, PR videos or local account commercials with this equipment?
We're going to do everything we can to help him. No doubt he will still be living at home in the summer of 2015. By then he's going to have a student loan to pay off. We have a 2005 Hyundai Accent that we are going to give him for college. I hope that thing still runs when it is 10 years old and he isn't making car payments on top of that. The thing has 120,000 miles on it but runs really well. I just fear when he graduates he's going to be in deep debt and have limited employment. I may be wrong. What do you think? Thanks.

Answer
Hi "Upwardly Mobile":

Fellow Contributor "L" covered most of the bases quite well, but the only point he didn't underscore is that MOST good video & film production programs at community colleges HAVE the cameras, lights, mikes, tripods, and other gear that the students will learn on & use.

When I went to a local (but nationally prominent) university with a Broadcast/Film Dept., portable video was still fairly new, but all the film cameras, tripods, & light kits were supplied by the Department for students to "check out" as-needed for class projects.

And most video production students start out with Studio Production techniques (where it's easier for groups to learn 3-point lighting, camera setup & tripod/dolly operation, shot composition, audio techniques & mixing, etc.). No need for portable field gear there.

For field production & Electronic News Gathering, a good college will have a fair number of camcorders for students to use & check out (if needed for outside-of-class projects).

The same is true for Editing Software & computer workstations. Some college programs might be economizing and making students supply their own laptops for this, but all the major software companies offer Academic Editions of their normally-expensive edit suites at discounted prices. And of course, nowadays, apps like iMovie (Mac) and Movie Maker (PC) come "free" as part of the operating system and can accomplish what older (and expensive) software used to do, as far as basic editing.

As "L" mentioned, do a bit of "homework" yourself by contacting the community college's department head & instructors for your son's chosen major. Tour the facilities (studio and edit suites) and ask about the "equipment room" for student project gear. See what textbooks (a major expense) are required, and whether computer/laptop & software expense will be part of what's expected of your son. Only if there's little-or-no camcorder gear (or no hands-on studio cameras) would I recommend buying anything like the models from B+H that you listed.

Almost every cable TV & freelance video job I've had over the past 30 years has "supplied" (rented or company-owned) the cameras & grip gear I needed. I bring my own gear only when it's a "favor" or when what I have is better-suited to the task, or they want a "director with gear". My point being, your son doesn't need to own =any= camera gear to make a living freelancing. A good camera operator can stay busy in almost any part of the country, with just his/her skills. (Same for sound mixers & boom/wireless mike operators.)

hope this helps, and hope it saves you some money,
--Dennis C.

What do you think of the Canon VIXIA HF S11 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder?

So, after a little research, I am probably going to purchase a Flash Memory camcorder instead of a Hard Disk Drive camcorder. If I purchase this Canon camcorder, I'm definitely going to purchase a 32 GB SDHC memory card. For those with "camcorder experience", what do you think? Also, what video software would be a good choice along with this camcorder?

Answer
If our only choices are between hard disc drive and flash memory for video storage, then the Canon HF S series is the better choice. The file formats of the video are the same (very highly compressed AVCHD files in MTS format), so the video quality will be similar. The difference is that HDD camcorders have known issues (vibration, high altitude) that flash memory camcorders do not share (nor do miniDV tape). As well, with fewer moving parts, the same battery in a flash memory camcorder or a HDD camcorder will last longer in the flash memory camcorder.

Any AVCHD editor will work - Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere, iMovie '08 or newer or FinalCut float to the top. Be sure your computer exceeds the CPU, RAM and available hard disc drive space requirements. AVCHD is a pig.

Personally, I would prefer the Canon HV40, but there are different requirements for the more "pro-like" miniDV tape and that media was not on your short list.

What is a good vid camera that will make good vids for youtube, and be easy to transfer to a comp for editing?

Drew

I'm looking for a good camcorder with good picture and sound quality. I know very little about the different types of video cameras (hard drive, etc.) I plan on using it to transfer and edit videos on my computer. I won't spend more than $350. A specific model would help me most, but a simple explanation about which type of camera would be best for me would be appreciated.

Answer
The Optura 600 from canon

The Optura 600 represents the flagship of Canon's 1 chip MiniDV camcorders, the king of the Optura line. Retailing at around $1100 (up approximately $400 from the Optura 60), your money might be well-spent. The 600's huge 1/2.8" CCD promises excellent video performance, a category the Opturas have traditionally faired well in. Matchbook bodies seem to be all the rage, combining portability and deed. Many matchbooks, however, present handling issues, and may annoy those expecting a professional feel to match the large price tag. We hope the Optura 600 brought its "A-game," because we dropped it in the middle of the ring to face off against the top MiniDV consumer cams of the year.

Video Performance
The Optura 600 sports an enormous 1/2.8â CCD with 3.5 effective MP. The camcorder also uses Canonâs RGB Primary Color Filter for a boost in video performance. The difference these specs makes becomes obvious when you compare it to the Optura 60. The picture appears sharper and the colors are richer. The grayscale is also much more sharply defined.

Because this is Canonâs top of the line consumer camcorder, we held it up against the top models from other manufacturers. Compared to the GR-X5, one of our top video performers this year, the colors are a shade darker, and overall you might say that the Optura 600âs spectrum is more even. The black/white contrast looks better in the JVC GR-X5, however. The colors from the Sony DCR-PC1000

Which one is better for take film in dark

I want only compare these in this field

Answer
They are not in the same class.

Both are hard disc drive based - right off the bat, they would fall off my list just for that... but here goes.

Both have a built-in infrared emitter for zero light video capture ("NightShot"). Video will be poor and in black and white. I HOPE the XR500 would be better in the dark, but combining AVCHD compression + small lens + small imaging chip, the low light behavior is similar.

The ENTRY level SR65 has no mic jack. It records only to a very highly compressed MPEG2 standard definition video format. This typically requires conversion to a more useful format before editing. The only audio control the SR65 has is in the menu - "Normal" or "Low" gain (for loud audio environments). It retails for about $500 if you can find it. Sony discontinued the product,

The XR500 is an expensive consumer camcorder with a mic jack and manual audio control. It saves to a very highly compressed high definition format called AVCHD. The MTS files can be a bear to work with.

For editing, your computer needs to be fairly new (and really fast), have LOTS of RAM and a hard drive that is NOT the startup drive so you have a place to store the video project files. Older versions of video editors cannot deal with AVCHD video. MovieMaker can't deal with AVCHD video at all. The current versions of Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere float to the top. Or, in the Mac environment, iMovie '08 or newer or the current versions of Final Cut (Express or Pro).

What should I buy, a digital camera or a camcorder?

best camcorders under $400 on HP Photosmart M525 Digital Camera : Customer Reviews
best camcorders under $400 image

Thankots

Hello, I'm in a bit of a trouble right here, what should I buy? A digital camera or a camcorder, I both like taking videos and pictures, what do you suggest?

I know digital cameras can't take very good quality videos, but can camcorders capture a good quality picture?

Please, if you suggest a product, please keep it under 400⬠(or 580$/359british pounds)

Thank you.

Answer
Most consumer grade digital cameras can't take very good quality videos AND most consumer grade camcorders can't capture good quality pictures.

Although, many camcorders are shooting up to say, 5 mega pixel images. And some digital cameras can record video in 640 x 480, which is not too bad for YouTube, etc.

I own the camera at the link below. It takes awesome images and the video is okay for my use. It's just standard definition. But I have high definition video cameras I use to for video.

It's one of those things where you have to decide which is more important to you, high quality images or high quality video.

Can you help me find the best camcorder for my specifications?

Brooks B

I want it to be under $400.
I need to be able to connect it to my computer so that I can edit the content.
I also want my final product to be stored on a dvd.

Things like good picture quality and user friendly controls would be great.

Please give recommendations for the right camcorder for me.

Thank you.

HD1 has effective sensor resolution in 5,100,000 pixels. It is based on a small body with dimensions: 80x119x36mm, weighs 210g and costs abt. $400. What is the best software to edit videos and put on DVD for a camara that creates m2ts files?

slb1969

I have a Sony Camcorder and right now I am converting the m2ts files that it creates to the supported format for pinnacle studios. The conversion takes a long time so I am looking to skip the conversion step.

Answer
I think your trying to create a "classic" dvd, possibly with menus? The problem is that your m2ts files are probably high definition, and old fashioned DVD is not. Your software has to reduce the resolution of your video to convert to standard DVD "vob" files, which can be a slow process. But you may not necessarily need to reduce the definition of your files to an old outdated format (and why would you want to?)?

Most newer DVD and BluRay players recognize video files with the HD type compression format (AVI files compressed with either h264, xVid, etc...). In other words, if you use a conversion program to instead convert your files to HD avi, they may play directly in your player by just burning them as files onto a DVD disc. A good (and free) program that does this easily is the freeware program Freemake. It will will combine, merge, and save multiple files into a single HD file if desired. Think it will also burn them for you onto a DVD. Check the following two links out, think they'll help:

What is the best 1080 Camcorder for YouTube?

best camcorders under 600 on ... of ultra-slim, fast-booting laptops will be available for under $600
best camcorders under 600 image

Ben

I am looking to buy a new camcorder for making movies. What are some of the better cameras that I could buy? Any price under $600 is fine, but it needs to be able to record in 1080p, thanks!

Answer
Right now I'm looking at the Panasonic HDC-HS900K camcorder:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004I43MK4/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=thegoarev-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399349&creativeASIN=B004I43MK4

It's not under your $600 budget with a price of $1399, but it's got some pretty good features about it. Like 1080/60p frames per second (first consumer camera I've seen do this) at 28mbps (also highest I've seen in a consumer camera). It's also capable of capturing 3D video (though you need an extra lens for that). One last thing I like about it is it has a built-in 220gb hard drive and it supports SD cards (SD, SDHC and SDXC).

What is the best type of camera for filming videos primarily, and also takes great pics?

Fig

I'm looking at under $600. I heard DSLR's are fun, better for hands on focus, and have great shots. But their video has sound issues. Camcorders (Sony Handy Cams) on the other hand seem to be refined to pointing and shooting.

Answer
Many still cameras have video functions, and especially the DSLRs with video produce decent enough results. However, if video is important to you, you are MUCH better off with a camcorder.
At this point in time, they still do a much better job (and are much more user-friendly) at video and audio recording than still cameras can.
