What is the best(under $200) camcorder?

I'm looking for the best video camera under 200 dollars. Not a camera that uses tapes and stuff. One that uses either a memory card or saves the video inside the camera and can connect to a computer to upload to Youtube. Doesn't have to be HD. I'm mostly going to use it to make short videos and for youtube. Personal use, not anything big. Any suggestion? Thanks

Answer
I like my Toshiba Camileo H30 walmart.com has it for $135.00 it is 1080p hd. I will say that low light performance is not top notch, but it is not bad for this price range a little grain can be seen at low light levels. The step up is the X100 Toshiba for $159.00 at walmart.com as well. My H30 shoots pretty good stills as well as long as you use 10 mpix and not the 16 mpix setting. The h30 has a 10 mpix sensor and uses a digital process to produce 16, this adds artifacts to the picture so stick to 10 mpix for the best stills. Both camcorders will upload to you tube with the push of a button on the camera. I will say that I don't like the software that came with it to convert the AVI files to DVD so I went to cnet and downloaded a free high rated AVI file to DVD burner and it works great. I think you will be hard pressed to find a better camcorder for 135 bucks.

good microphone for canon hv20 to fit in the shoe at the top!?!?!? (under $200)?

Mary

I am an aspiring teen filmaker, so i obviously dont have a ton of money. I am going to purchase the canon hv20 camcorder but i am looking for a good mic to fit in the shoe at the top. The cheaper the better, but I would prefer better quality. Thanks!!!

Answer
That mic PLF listed is pretty good - but before I make a recommendation, I'd like to know what you are filming. Since the HV20 has a mic-in jack, you can use pretty much any mic that has a 1/8" connector.

As a filmmaker, you will learn that the mic does not need to be connected to the camera. Many times, recording someone speaking, the audio will improve when the mic is closer to the audio source. In the case of the mic suggestion from PLF, the mic cable is short - and I think that mic gets power from the camera (through the shoe). That does indeed work under many conditions...

But what if you want to have the camera a little further away that 4-8 feet? The audi will be a challenge to get unless you can get the mic closer. I would suggest something like NRG Research SA-568. It is a switchable tele or "normal pattern, has a camera mount and can connect to your camera with either 1/8" short cable or you can extend it with the other connector cable and an XLR mic cable so it can be hand-held or mounted to a boom for someone to hold and aim at the audio source.

http://nrgresearch.com/sa568.htm

http://www.amazon.com/SA-568-Dual-Mode-Shotgun-Microphone-Accessory/dp/B0000E215C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=musical-instruments&qid=1203865133&sr=8-1

And yes, I own and use one... And I also use a Audio-Technica AT-825 stereo mic (which connects to my Sony HDR-HC1 through a BeachTek DXA-6) and a couple of Shure lavaliere wireless mics...

Good romance/drama manga?

top 10 camcorders of 2011 image

Sonador

Some of my favorites are Mars, Akuma de Sourou, Hanatsukihime, Cat Street, Rockin' Heaven, Hana Yori Dango, Red River, orange...etc

I don't like popular ones like Ouran Host Club, Vampire Knight, Kaichou wa Maid Sama, Dengeky Dais, Beast Master, Moe Kare, Black Bird, Say i Love You, Kare Kano and similar.

Also I read really a lot of manga, somewhere about 200, so please no common/popular titles...
Maybe something newer, that started airing in 2011/2012? Or some older ones that are not so well known but good and underated.

And please no Naruto, Bleach, Bleach, Full Metal Alchemist etc. also...
I like romance, drama, slice of life, psyhological, fantasy, supernatural and little comedy...
No yuri, yaoi, ecchi, shounen... Smut is fine.

Thank you and 10 points for best answer. :)

Answer
Rec Kimi ga Naita Hi (FINISHED)
--- Aizawa Minami is a girl who has never cried. She prefers to observe life through the lens of her camcorder, as she is an awkward and serious person. Because of this her classmates shun her, but she ignores it and occupies herself with recording the things she likes. One day she meets Satoru, a classmate and retired actor who seems to understand her. They quickly become close, but what Minami doesn't know is that Satoru is hiding a big secret from the world...
--- This drama romance is one of the best manga I've ever read. It's only 4 chapters, but I couldn't stop thinking about it all day after I finished it. It's beautiful.
http://www.mangahere.com/manga/rec_kimi_ga_naita_hi/

Kimi ni Shika Kikoenai (FINISHED)
--- Aihara Ryo is a shy highschooler who is shunned by everyone. She doesn't own a cell phone because no one would call her anyway. So she imagines owning a cell phone in her head, but one day there is a connection, and someone is on the line! And thus begins an interesting friendship...
--- This 5-chapter manga packs an emotional punch. It hit me in a kinda sorta similar way to Orange, sad and sweet. I can't tell you any more without ruining it, but it's definitely one of my favorites!
http://www.mangahere.com/manga/kimi_ni_shika_kikoenai/

Hajimari no Niina (PUBLISHING)
--- Niina is a cute and energetic 11-year-old girl who is very special. She still has the memories of her past life as a girl named Chitose who died at age 15. One of these memories is a promise she made to her boyfriend Atsurou. Now, as Niina, she wants to fulfill the promise she made so long ago. But can she?
--- This manga is ongoing, with 9 chapters out currently, and I love it so far. It's sweet and sad at the same time, and the main character is really cute.
http://www.mangahere.com/manga/hajimari_no_niina/

Dear Green (FINISHED)
--- Aoi has always been the delinquent kind of girl, not taking her future seriously. She's always being compared to her talented older sister, and she's fed up with it. As a child she loved to play the flute, but she gave up because of her lack of self-confidence. One day when she is in her secret hiding place, she meets a genius photographer named Yohsuke. Can he give her the confidence to move on in life?
--- I almost never like romance one-shots because the love always feels rushed and fake when it's squished into one chapter like that. But this one is different. It's sweet and refreshing.
http://www.mangahere.com/manga/dear_green_sakura_amyuu/

Akuma to Love Song (PUBLISHING)
--- Touzuka High School is a public school with a pretty low grade point average. One day, a girl named Kawai Maria transfers in after being expelled from the state's top private girls school (St. Katria) for being violent. She's beautiful, but her bristly personality, arrogance, and brutal honesty quickly isolate her from most of the class... except for two very opposite boys...
--- This manga is ongoing, with 59 chapters released so far. It's not your typical romance shoujo manga. The characters are unique and complex, and you find out more about them and their pasts as you read. It's a great romance drama.
http://www.mangahere.com/manga/akuma_to_love_song/

Hana to Akuma (FINISHED)
--- 14 years ago, Vivi (a demon) decided to leave the demon realm and come to earth. There he found an abandoned baby girl and on a whim decided to keep her, naming her Hana. 14 years later, they are still living together, with Hana confused about her feelings for him and Vivi thinking of himself as her guardian and nothing more. But is their life together really that simple?
--- This manga is 58 chapters, and is a blend of drama, comedy, romance, and cuteness, with a smidge of demon-realm danger thrown in.
http://www.mangahere.com/manga/hana_to_akuma/

Hotarubi no Mori e (FINISHED)
--- Hotarubi no Mori e is 4 chapters long, and each chapter is a separate love story. Chapter #2 is titled "Hotarubi no Mori e", where the manga got its name. That chapter was recently turned into an anime movie with that same title, which is just as good as or maybe better that the original story. I love both so much.
---Chapter #2 is about a little girl named Hotaru who goes on summer vacation and gets lost in an enchanted forest, where she meets a spirit named Gin. He helps her find her way back but won't let her touch him, because a human's touch makes a spirit disappear forever. Hotaru and Gin become friends, and she begins to visit him in the forest every day of summer vacation, year after year.

(I don't have enough room to describe these next ones)

Koko ni Iru yo (COMPLETED, 21 chapters)
Hibi Chouchou (ONGOING, 17 chapters so far)
Kingyo Sou (COMPLETED, 8 chapters)

I have a Camcorder. I want to make videos on it. My only problem is, is a camcorder and a video camera the same thing for making and uploading videos to Youtube? if it isn't that i would need to also know how to upload a video from my Camcorder to Youtube. I already have an account. If I have to connect something to my computer which I am sure I am gonna have to do, what do I connect?

Answer
Turn the camcorder on, press the record button and record a video. Connect your camcorder to computer by whatever mode the manual for the camcorder tells you. Transfer you files to the computer, you may need a NLE program to do the transferring for you. Edit you flick, make a file, upload it to youtube. EASY to do

How to put miniDV from camcorder to youtube?

Matt C

I'm trying to upload videos from my camcorder to youtube. Do I need to download any software?? I have a usb cord and that's it. I'm not a computer geek so I have no clue what I'm doing. Please help, thank you!!

Answer
MiniDV tape based video will not transfer over USB unless your computer and the camcorder can handle USB streaming. Even if they can, the video quality will be poor because it is highly compressed.

MiniDV tape based camcorders normally transfer video using a firewire cable to connect the DV port on the camcorder to the firewire port on the computer. Since you have not told us which camcorder or which computer, we have no way to know for sure what your connection configuration is.

Once properly connected, the camcorder needs to be in "Play" or "VCR" mode. Lauch the video editor in your computer and "capture" or "Import" the video from the camcorder.

Edit.

Save.

Save As... or Export as a file that YouTube will allow. Most common are AVI and MOV.

USB generally will not work - and is used only for transferring stills from the camcorder's memory card. USB-to-firewire cable/hub/adapter/converter things will not work. If your computer does not have a firewire port, hopefully your computer has an available expansion slot so you can add one.

I need a cheap camcorder to record my high jumpers in track and field. Is this camcorder any good for this. Also can I transfer the files to my computer and what type of files will it upload to my computer. Should I invest the money on this camcorder or is there others I should consider?

Answer
The PlaySport would probably be fine for what you're talking about. It has 4x zoom which is twice as good as the Flip (but keep in mind it's digital, not actual optical zoom). It saves videos as MOV files and includes a USB cable and software to download them to your computer. It only has 128K internal memory so to record anything useful you'll need to get an SD memory card with it. Another pocket video camera you should look at is the Sony Bloggie touch. It's about $40 more than the Zx3 (or $20 less than the Zx5), doesn't need a memory card, and has a bigger screen.

Why wont my Kodak play sport video camera work?

And it wont let me watch the videos on the camera either or else it freezes and I have to reset it. What is a good camera for film and cinema?

Ok, I want to start making my own films. I was thinking of getting the Canon Rebel T2i but I dont know if it is a good camera. Please give me some advice, thanks! Oh and i want the price to be under $800. Thanks!

Answer
Hello,

I myself am looking for the right film camera for me, but the camera you say that you are thinking of getting, is not really for filming. Yes, the cameras such as the Canon Rebel T2i, Canon 50d/7D/550D are great cameras, they are not for film. Although they shoot film, they are for picture quality, and mainly if you want to use these cameras for filming, the quality will be OKAY unless it is still footage. What you want, is a camcorder which are mainly for film.
For example, the Panasonic Pro AG-HMC150 3CCD AVCHD 24fps Camcorder (http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-AG-HMC150-AVCHD-24fps Camcorder/dp/B001DKELYC/ref=pd_zg_rss_tr_e_172421_2) is slightly over the price of the Canon 7D. BUT, this camera is strictly for film, while the canon 7D, or the camera you are looking at, are basically for picture. So all in all, what you want is a camcorder and you can look at this site that gives you the "Top Rated Camcorders of 2010-2011", and it will display the price, features and reviews for many camcorders!

The Canon Rebl T2i shoots some pretty great video just as good as the Canon 7D, and I will post a link in the "sources" of some really helpful filming tips, where they are using the Rebel T2i to film the video.

But for the price under $800, I would look on that site for a handheld HD camcorder, or get the camera you want, but the Canon 7D is a very good option with proper lenses too, but the price is steep of $1500-$2000, plus $300-$400 for a good lens. :/
-Also you must remember that the camera is not what gives you good quality; it may help, but it is very minimal. You will need a good Lens for your camera to give it the best quality possible, and also look into lighting, and adjusting color contrasting and color grading when you are EDITING the film (look up some tutorials on youtube to adjust color to give it that cinematic look) so that way you have the best possible image. (I will give some links in the bottom that helped me with some film makig tips) Hope this helps :)

What is a good camera under $800 for making pro-like motocross movies? Best quality!?

Pat S

I need a camera that will take very great quality HD videos for a motocross movie that I will be selling. It needs to be under $800. THANKS
I'm making a motocross movie to sell in stores but the highest I can possibly go is $800. It needs to be compatible with Sony Vegas Pro and go into the computer through USB. Also, it has to be great with fast moving things, i.e. the bikes.

Answer
For the best quality I would suggest a Mini-dv camcorder but in your situation, you may be better off with a media card camcorder. I know the quality is not as good as a mini-dv camcorder but because of the huge amount of vibration the camera is going to be put through, I think a Mini-dv would spend more time being repaired, dust and vibration enemy of a camera. Forget HDD camcorders it will die very quickly, and a dvd camcorder does not even warrant a mention.

as for the model there are loads, its down to personal choice, and you need to find a camera that you are comfortable with. the best thing is to spend some time looking at some cameras, hold them get the feel for them. then make your decision.

Good luck

Emma

i plan on making a video diary of my next vacation, which is taken mostly outside. i have a $50 gift card to Best Buy. anyone know any good camcorder brands for outside use under $50.

Answer
good is not possible. i have seen black market cameras imported from China that are about that, but because they are illegal, you can't get repairs or warranty. And don't go by brand name as China is a communist country and does not honor western trademarks or patents. So it might have a famous "name" but not made by that manufacturer. this is so rampant that it now has the name "fake" merchandise.

Is there any way to tell when existing Camcorder prices will go down?

best camcorders by price image
Q. Panasonic releases a lot of their 2011 line of camcorders in March, will this make the price of their existing models go down? Is there any way to tell when existing Camcorder prices will go down (for any models).

Answer
right. top of line cameras always sell at a premium price. once a better model is available, that premium drops to a more commonplace price. however retailers do not drop prices until they have the new wonder model in stock, to do otherwise would reduce sales volume. some announced products never make it to the store (vaporware) or produced in such small quantity as to not change retail pricing structure. not all retailers drop prices, they may have a distribution deal with the manufacture to return older models from inventory. so bargain models are never on the shelf for you to buy. they become "factory refurbished" items for eventual sale as obsolete models.

How good is the video quality on modern HD camcorders?

I am hoping to get a general idea on how good a HD camcorder (price within 800$) would look on a 52" 1080p TV? Would it look flawless to the normal eye? How does it compare to blu-ray movies out today? Is it like watching DVD quality? Any information will be helpful. (I am thinking of getting the HF R10 Canon camcorder it will record in 1080p)
Thanks

Answer
flawless is not likely. all consumer HD camcorders have difficulty with action and moving camera shots. this is due to high compression. most any camera will take a great picture of a still subject in bright daylight.

the HR R10 records on flashcards, so its maximum datarate is substantially less than Blu-ray. at the highest setting, it is only 17 mbps. Blu-ray is 24-30 mbps, which can be reached by HDD class cameras. it is better than DVD but then DVD does not pretend to be an HD format.

What do you think of the Canon VIXIA HF S11 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder?

top canon camcorders on Digital Camera Lens Reviews
top canon camcorders image

coldcity80

So, after a little research, I am probably going to purchase a Flash Memory camcorder instead of a Hard Disk Drive camcorder. If I purchase this Canon camcorder, I'm definitely going to purchase a 32 GB SDHC memory card. For those with "camcorder experience", what do you think? Also, what video software would be a good choice along with this camcorder?

Answer
If our only choices are between hard disc drive and flash memory for video storage, then the Canon HF S series is the better choice. The file formats of the video are the same (very highly compressed AVCHD files in MTS format), so the video quality will be similar. The difference is that HDD camcorders have known issues (vibration, high altitude) that flash memory camcorders do not share (nor do miniDV tape). As well, with fewer moving parts, the same battery in a flash memory camcorder or a HDD camcorder will last longer in the flash memory camcorder.

Any AVCHD editor will work - Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere, iMovie '08 or newer or FinalCut float to the top. Be sure your computer exceeds the CPU, RAM and available hard disc drive space requirements. AVCHD is a pig.

Personally, I would prefer the Canon HV40, but there are different requirements for the more "pro-like" miniDV tape and that media was not on your short list.

How does one transfer the video or 'still pictures' from the Canon 210 Camcorder onto their PC?

ShanLyn

I've just recently purchased a Canon 210 Camcorder. It has some nice features but what the vendor didn't tell me was that I wouldn't be able to download the video or the 'still pictures' onto my PC for further editing. Help. All answers are appreciated.

Answer
All video cameras can be used on most computers, I'm not sure if this is a minidvd camera but i think so, if I'm wrong I am going to put 2 answers.
If you have a mini dvd camcorderâ¦.
You will have to finalize your dvd in the camera and then put the dvd in your computer's DVD burner (top loading only) and then you will have to convert the files (I downloaded handbrake file converter free) and import them into your editing program. Use the HELP feature in your editing program to learn about editing. Once you are ready to burn, your project will be burned to a different DVD and you can file the original away.
If you have a mini dv (cassette) camcorderâ¦.
Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder. Make sure your camera is in playback mode.
The fine print in your manual makes reference to firewire (ieee 1394) connection.

I want to invest in one, but I'm not too familiar with all the technicalities of photography. I'm pretty much self taught. I'm looking at the cannon DSLRs or the xf 100. I obviously need one that's going to do well in low lighting. Anyone have opinions on this?

Answer
If your primary use is going to be video, then a DSLR is not the best choice. They're not really designed for video and they can only shoot a few minutes at time before stopping. If you're just shooting clips it will be fine, but it won't be able to capture a whole wedding ceremony.

For dedicated videography, you need to a look at a purpose-designed digital camcorder. They vary in price from "quite cheap" to "extremely expensive". Other people on here know more than I do about video and I'm sure you'll get some informative answers.

What's a good affordable video camera for Wedding videography?

Joshua

What are some good camera's?

It also has to be professional looking. Not a Flip Mino.

Answer
Standard definition:
Canon GL2
Panasonic AG-DVX100

High Definition (and standard defintion):
Canon XHA1
Sony HDR-FX1000

There's lots more, this these would be "minimum". You will also want:

Two high capacity rechargable batteries from the camcorder manufacturer.
Wireless (VHF, full diversity) mics (handheld and clip-on lavaliere). Sennheiser, Sony (professional), Audio Technica.
If you want to use XLR mics with a camcorder equipped with a 1/8" (3.5mm) audio in jack, be sure to add a XLR adapter (juicedLink CX231, BeachTek DXA-6)
Tripod (Bogen Manfrotto, Libec).
Video lights (Bescor, NRG Research).
LANC (VariZoom)
Cases (Pelican, SKB).

Later, check into
SteadiCam/GlideCam/Varicam vest stabilizing systems.
Camera crane (Kessler - and you'll need a monitor because you can't see what the camcorder sees when you are 8-12 feet away from the camcorder).

And be sure your computing platform can handle the editing needs (lots of external hard drive space, lots of RAM and for high definition, fast CPU) and can burn DVDs... and properly label the DVDs (the stick-on labels can peel and are not recommended).

The camcorder is just a part of the "system"... Please note that there are no prosumer grade internal hard drive or flash memory camcorders that save to anemic consumer AVCHD/MTS. The typical data type is DV or HDV to miniDV tape. This means your computer needs to have a firewire port - USB won't work. If you need to be tapeless, then you can either move up to the Sony HVR-Z7, Panasonic AG-HVX200 or JVC-HY series... or just ad an external drive from Sony or Focus Enhancements (FireStore) to a miniDV tape based camcorder.

Good luck!

My son is a high school senior. Next year he wants to go to community college and live at home (at least that is reasonably affordable) instead of going away to school. He wants to take an expensive major however. Video production. We have been able to save about $5,000 towards his education. We are not wealthy people. The rest will have to come from loans and maybe a grant or scholarship.
We are looking at some "entry level" pro cameras in the $1500-1800 range. That's about 1/3 of our savings for his education.
Models include these:

and

My concern is he starts September 2013 so these products may not even be available by then or others will be available. We hope he graduates May 2015. He tells us when he graduates he will maybe find a freelance job or shoot local cable news, build up some experience, maybe after 2 years go for a B.A. at least part time.
Is anything we buy him in 2013 (summer) going to be any use to him as a working professional in 2015 (summer)? So let's say you are a class of 2012 graduate with an AAS in video production. The camera you purchased in the summer of 2010 when you first started, do you still use it professionally? Can you make anything doing freelance news videos, PR videos or local account commercials with this equipment?
We're going to do everything we can to help him. No doubt he will still be living at home in the summer of 2015. By then he's going to have a student loan to pay off. We have a 2005 Hyundai Accent that we are going to give him for college. I hope that thing still runs when it is 10 years old and he isn't making car payments on top of that. The thing has 120,000 miles on it but runs really well. I just fear when he graduates he's going to be in deep debt and have limited employment. I may be wrong. What do you think? Thanks.

Answer
Hi "Upwardly Mobile":

Fellow Contributor "L" covered most of the bases quite well, but the only point he didn't underscore is that MOST good video & film production programs at community colleges HAVE the cameras, lights, mikes, tripods, and other gear that the students will learn on & use.

When I went to a local (but nationally prominent) university with a Broadcast/Film Dept., portable video was still fairly new, but all the film cameras, tripods, & light kits were supplied by the Department for students to "check out" as-needed for class projects.

And most video production students start out with Studio Production techniques (where it's easier for groups to learn 3-point lighting, camera setup & tripod/dolly operation, shot composition, audio techniques & mixing, etc.). No need for portable field gear there.

For field production & Electronic News Gathering, a good college will have a fair number of camcorders for students to use & check out (if needed for outside-of-class projects).

The same is true for Editing Software & computer workstations. Some college programs might be economizing and making students supply their own laptops for this, but all the major software companies offer Academic Editions of their normally-expensive edit suites at discounted prices. And of course, nowadays, apps like iMovie (Mac) and Movie Maker (PC) come "free" as part of the operating system and can accomplish what older (and expensive) software used to do, as far as basic editing.

As "L" mentioned, do a bit of "homework" yourself by contacting the community college's department head & instructors for your son's chosen major. Tour the facilities (studio and edit suites) and ask about the "equipment room" for student project gear. See what textbooks (a major expense) are required, and whether computer/laptop & software expense will be part of what's expected of your son. Only if there's little-or-no camcorder gear (or no hands-on studio cameras) would I recommend buying anything like the models from B+H that you listed.

Almost every cable TV & freelance video job I've had over the past 30 years has "supplied" (rented or company-owned) the cameras & grip gear I needed. I bring my own gear only when it's a "favor" or when what I have is better-suited to the task, or they want a "director with gear". My point being, your son doesn't need to own =any= camera gear to make a living freelancing. A good camera operator can stay busy in almost any part of the country, with just his/her skills. (Same for sound mixers & boom/wireless mike operators.)

hope this helps, and hope it saves you some money,
--Dennis C.

What's a good HD Camera for recording and achieving slow motion with?

best hd camcorders under 800 on Best Rated TV Models with HD Support Under 800 Dollars
best hd camcorders under 800 image

Outer Have

I need a good HD camera to record with that won't break the bank (preferably under $800, that possible?). I've heard time and time again that I should get a camera that records in 60i, then in post production I can slow it down to 24p. What camera are good for this?

Answer
You are mixing formats.

60i = 30 frames per second - this is standard NTSC frame rate. When you slow the video to about 14 frames per second, you will start to see poor "slow motion" results. It gets worse the slower you go. "Slowing" to 24 fps is an attempt to get a cinematic look/feel because this is what film based cameras record at. This is not a slow motion feature.

If you really want slow motion, then record a a fast frame rate. Some Sony consumer camcorders have "SmoothSlowRecord" that allows a few seconds burst of up to 120 frames per second so when the video is played back at normal speed (30 fps), it is truly slow motion. Some of the Casio Exilim DSCs can do faster than that.

If what you want is the 24 fps "cinematic look", then you need a camcorder that records at 24 fps. The Canon HV40 and many of the HF series camcorders do that. Some Sonys, too. But keep in mind that it is a lot of marketing hype that pushes that... If you REALLY want the 24 fps "film look", you REALLY need to be using a film camera - not digital video.

If you decide you really want to do the digital 24fps thing, be sure your video editor can deal with that and the "drop down" conversion issues - many cannot.

Looking for a good prosumer Camcorder but not too pricey?

Hey there,
My friends and I are going to start a high-quality web show for reviewing video games.
We are looking for a prosumer camcorder that shoots high-end video.

What would you recommend for under 800$?

Answer
JVC Everio GZHD7 would offer a high level of manual controls since we first spent some time with the HD7 at CES in January. The big question has been whether the camcorder would perform up to its billing. The HD7 records video using a new flavor of MPEG-2 compression that wanders as high as 30 Mbps in FHD ("Full HD" 1920 x 1080) mode. That led us to wonder whether that venerable HDV format had finally met its match. As it turns out, video performance is not the reason to buy the JVC GZ-HD7 â but it remains one of the yearâs most intriguing models.

Best camcorder out there? :)?

BEST CAMCORDER OUT THERE? I want it for cinematic looking film, thanks :)

I want the best bang for my buck ;). I have been shopping around a lot and have decided i might want the panasonic tm700, i can spend up to 1000 dollars. I want to have the best camcorder that will be good for episodes (movies) etc. So i want it to have a really crisp clear image and i want the colors to be good as well. I really like this look of the canon T2i in this video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8sQS3eNUL0I&feature=player_embedded

But its made for pictures more, not videos. In theory the tm700 has better stats? than the canon T2i, but then i find some videos of the panasonic tm700 horrible! So im wondering if maybe they just have crappy settings when they took it, or is it just like that half the time? or is it just because of Accessories that they have added on?

Heres a good panasonic tm700 video

crappy:

Thanks so much for your time i really appreciate it :)

If you could also tell me the difference between TM700 and the SD700 panasonics i would be soo appreciative! thx :))

What new Video Camera should I get?

Thomas

I can order one on Amazon but it needs to be around $300, 400 is too much. Full HD is obviously nice but I dont expect to get one for that price. Im looking for good quality video for shooting youtube videos and I've been looking at a Canon Vixia http://www.amazon.com/Canon-VIXIA-R200-Camcorder-Slots/dp/B004HW7EAG/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1309330732&sr=1-2 .

Can't afford 35mm film for my horror movie. Is the next best thing still 16mm?

best 4k camcorder image

Johnny

I want to shoot my low budget independent horror feature length movie on film. BUT, i can't afford 35mm film. Not even sure if I can afford 16mm film for that matter. However, i've not seen or read about any type of video camcorder/camera that can give me that "film look" that I would really like to achieve for my horror movie. The Black Magic Cinema Camera looks like a good deal, but i'm not sure how that media would transfer to the big silver screen. I'd like to know what the PROS AND CONS are of using 16mm to film the movie and what the process is for getting it into Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere for editing. Any info from you filmmaking professionals out there would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Answer
You can rent an ARRI 16 mm motion picture camera with the lens and tripod.

The editing of film is a whole different technology.

You may want to look into renting a 3-CCD video camera. With that footage, you can use Adobe Premiere to edit the video.

If you intend to eventually make 35 mm theatrical relase prints, you may want to look into shooting with a 4K video camera. ARRI, JVC, Sony, JVC and Red One make such cameras you can rent

What is good MP quailty on camcorders?

Answer
Megapixels are used for measuring digital still image resolution, not video. Video resolution is measured using Horizontal line count and video quality is based on the amount of compression used.

Horizontal line count is used for measuring video resolution:
Standard definition video = 480 horizontal lines.
High definition video = 720 or 1080 horizontal lines.

640 x 480 = standard definition video @ 4:3 aspect ratio = 307,200 pixels or about 0.3 megapixel.

1280 x 720 = high definition video @ 16:9 (widescreen) aspect ratio = 921,600 pixels or almost 1 megapixel.

1920 x 1080 = high definition video @ 16:9 (widescreen) aspect ratio = 2,073,600 pixels or about 2 megapixels.

The *QUALITY* of the video depends on the above AND the amount of compression applied to the video when it is captured and stored.

LOTS of compression = lots of discarded video data = lower video quality.
Less compression = less discarded video data and higher video quality.

Even "ultra high definition" video is referred to as "4k video".

Since we don't know which camera you have or what its video capabilities are, we have no way to know what sort of quality you'll get.

Tips:
1) Use LOTS of light when capturing video. Indoors, that means adding LOTS of light.

2) Use a tripod or other steadying device. Don't capture video handheld.

3) Don't expect good quality capture of REALLY LOUD or really low audio. Normal levels will be fine.

4) Get the camcorder close to where the people are speaking. If that is not possible, use an audio recorder (like a Zoom H1, or H2) and synch the audio later or use an external mic connected to the camcorder.

What to look for:

LARGE lens filter diameter (58mm or larger for your project.)
LARGE imaging chip system.
Mic jack
Mics (wireless would be best - I like Sennheiser G3 with a portable base station - but they are pricey.)

Suggestion: Canon HF M500 or higher.

What's the best way to make video look like film?

I have a Mini-DV camcorder and I'm interested in making my own short movies. I would like to know how to emulate the look of film as closely as I can because it is a vastly superior product in comparison to footage shot on DV.

Answer
The easiest way to make a video look like a film would be to change the settings on the camera to Letterbox settings (the black strips that are the top and bottom of the screen). It works for me when I did film and televsion :)

Why can i see the lens when recording?

PledgeDust

I've just brought myself an Opteka .43 fisheye for my sony handycam dv camcorder and when the lens is attached you can see a curved corner on the top right hand side of the image when recording, why is this and can i stop it?

Answer
One thing is, did you check to make sure that the lens is the right size for your camera, because that seems like that could be the problem in my own opinion. Because when you can start seeing the corner of the lens in the camera it will either be the wrong size or the lens wasn't made for that specific camera, this what I have come across before on certain occasions.

How do I eliminate background humming from DVD?

I have a Sony camcorder and a Sony DVD Direct burner VRD-VC20. How do I eliminate the loud background humming sound? I also have the Sony Vegas software. Can I use that for that purpose?

Answer
Try this, it has worked for me. Take some noise dampening material and cut it to size so that it will fit on top and on bottom of your cd drive. Then stick it back into your case. You can buy some of this stuff pretty easily. It's called a sound dampening mat. Around $20 with shipping, and you can use it all throughout your case.

How do I view video files from a mini dvd?

Kevin

Earlier my classmates and I shot a film in multiple takes on a Sony Camcorder that uses Mini DVD's. I was about to edit and make it it one big film, but when I put the disc into my new laptop it couldn't find any files on the disc. How do I fix this?

Answer
You will have to finalize your dvd in the camera and then put the dvd in your computer's DVD burner (top loading only) and then you will have to convert the files (I downloaded http://www.squared5.com http://www.handbrake.fr/ file converter free) and import them into your editing program. Use the HELP feature in your editing program to learn about editing. Usually you would import your videos and drop them in to the timeline, add transitions, menus, music, etc. Once you are ready to burn, your project will be burned to a different DVD and you can file the original away.
