Difference between a digital camera and a camcorder?

I need to buy one but I am not sure which one to go for. I am primarily interested in videos but I don't want to compromise much on the photos either, so what would you suggest?
Thanks :)

Answer
-A camcorder is a device dedicated to the capture of video.
-A digital camera is a device made specifically for creating still images.
-Both can do the job of the other, depending on each individual camcorder or digital camera.

This line between camcorder and still camera has become skewed in the past few years with the advent of HD video capable DSLRs. Recent DSLR(Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras now are able to capture High-Definition video. It would be very appropriate at this time for camcorders to feel threatened because the quality is extremely high with the DSLR's still and video capture abilities. When a camcorder is used to take a still, it is really no match for a DSLR.

The quality of DSLR video is such that HD commercials have been made using them versus several thousand dollars worth of professional video equipment. If I recall correctly, I believe Hollywood might be shooting feature films using DSLRs. I know for a fact that the season finale of House was done entirely with a Canon 5D mk2 DSLR( http://trueslant.com/erikkain/2010/04/14/house-season-finale-shot-entirely-with-canon-5d-mark-ii-dslr-camera/ )

Also, here's an article and trailer for a short narrative film that was one of the first made using a DSLR( http://blog.livebooks.com/2010/01/movie-dslr-canon-markii-sundance/ )

Depending on your seriousness and budget, maybe you should look into entry-level DSLRs as even those come with HD video capture. I haven't been keeping up with DSLR news lately but I believe you'll have to make due with manual focusing with the current crop of cameras. Look it up.

What is a good camera for film and cinema?

andrew

Ok, I want to start making my own films. I was thinking of getting the Canon Rebel T2i but I dont know if it is a good camera. Please give me some advice, thanks! Oh and i want the price to be under $800. Thanks!

Answer
Hello,

I myself am looking for the right film camera for me, but the camera you say that you are thinking of getting, is not really for filming. Yes, the cameras such as the Canon Rebel T2i, Canon 50d/7D/550D are great cameras, they are not for film. Although they shoot film, they are for picture quality, and mainly if you want to use these cameras for filming, the quality will be OKAY unless it is still footage. What you want, is a camcorder which are mainly for film.
For example, the Panasonic Pro AG-HMC150 3CCD AVCHD 24fps Camcorder (http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-AG-HMC150-AVCHD-24fps Camcorder/dp/B001DKELYC/ref=pd_zg_rss_tr_e_172421_2) is slightly over the price of the Canon 7D. BUT, this camera is strictly for film, while the canon 7D, or the camera you are looking at, are basically for picture. So all in all, what you want is a camcorder and you can look at this site that gives you the "Top Rated Camcorders of 2010-2011", and it will display the price, features and reviews for many camcorders!

The Canon Rebl T2i shoots some pretty great video just as good as the Canon 7D, and I will post a link in the "sources" of some really helpful filming tips, where they are using the Rebel T2i to film the video.

But for the price under $800, I would look on that site for a handheld HD camcorder, or get the camera you want, but the Canon 7D is a very good option with proper lenses too, but the price is steep of $1500-$2000, plus $300-$400 for a good lens. :/
-Also you must remember that the camera is not what gives you good quality; it may help, but it is very minimal. You will need a good Lens for your camera to give it the best quality possible, and also look into lighting, and adjusting color contrasting and color grading when you are EDITING the film (look up some tutorials on youtube to adjust color to give it that cinematic look) so that way you have the best possible image. (I will give some links in the bottom that helped me with some film makig tips) Hope this helps :)

How can I get the slow motion effect from MXF 60p recorded by P2 HD Camcorder?

I have some MXF video files shot with my P2 HD Camcorder. I am shooting at 60P, but I want to slow the footage 50 percent for editing. I assumed that if I selected the 30P setting that the footage would be slowed, but the converted shot is the same length as the original footage that was shot at 60P. How can I get the slow motion effect?

Answer
You did not tell us what you are editing with or where you "selected the 30P setting" to slow the video playback speed.

Don't convert anything until the video editor can deal with the video. Then use the video editor's controls to do what is needed.

I just answered your FCP question.

Once the video is in FCP, place the clip you want to slow into the timeline. Click once to select it. On the command line, under "Modify" select "Speed". Adjust as needed.

How do I plug my camcorder into my computer?

Nyssa

I want to transfer the videos from my camcorder to the computer, but i cant figure out how to plug it in! I got the box with all the cords and its not fitting together, maybe I am missing something I need? Please help! My camcorder is a Sony HDR - PJ260
oops! i forgot, my computer is a macbook pro.

Answer
You did not tell us which computer.

The Sony HDR-PJ260 is a consumer-grade entry level camcorder that connects to a computer using a USB cable.

DO NOT plug in all the cables at the same time.

Read the manual:
http://www.docs.sony.com/release/HDR-CX250_CX260V_CX580V_PJ260_PJ260V_PJ580_PJ580V_PJ600_PJ600V_XR260V_EN_ES.pdf
Refer to page 15, item 11 for the location of the USB port.
Page 18 shows what came in the box.

You will need the USB cable and the AC power cable (mains lead) and adapter.

Put the camcorder into Play or PC mode. Use a AVCHD-capable video editor to import the video directly or copy the video files to the computer and transcode them to a file type your video editor can deal with. MPEG Streamclip from www.squared5.com is a good transcoder.

I have this JVC camcorder and can not figure out how to take the date and time off my videos

Answer
While I am not familiar specifically with this model of camcorder from personal use, I see that it is a digital hard drive camcorder.

In the digital formats, date, time and other data are actually part of the file that is created. Some aspects of the file can be called up and displayed on the screen for use as need be in the future - can be VERY helpful for editing, for example.

The documentation that I see says that the output is via a FireWire cable. The mini version of FireWire might not send the "on screen" time and date out to the DVD or computer, so if you are capturing it to a computer for editing, that might do the trick.

I am assuming that it is on footage that you already have, so you probably had the framing of the shot set the way you wanted it - even with the date and time on screen. You could edit the video and change the aspect ration to a more wide of a wide screen by cutting off the top and bottom - thus cutting out the date and time, but this might not be desirable for the footage you shot.

I agree that it is likely an on screen option while you view it on your camcorder, and a scanning of the user manual might reveal how to play back the video without the date and time being on screen.

If you copied the video to another format, and the date and time are on the screen - they are there and cannot be removed, but as long as the original file is still in place, your options are wide open.

Even if your file is locked into a format with the date and time on the screen - Sony Vegas and Pinnacle have software (reasonably priced) taht can assist in helping you cut the time off the picture in an acceptable fashion.

Best wishes!

What is the best brand for a video camcorder?

I would like to purchase a video camcorder to make high quality films. What are good brands, products, specific models, etc. Please list your pros/cons of you are aware of any. Thanks

Answer
I have best experience with Canon and Sony. Other, but little less popular and refined, brands are JVC, Panasonic, and occasionally some others like Samsung, Toshiba, etc.

Canon pros: 1080p unlike many others who offer only 1080i. Similar ergonomics like Sony which leads the field. Great optics. Cinema mode with 24 fps.
Canon cons: Specific/nonstandard "top shoe" for external light or microphone. I'm not sure whether high speed filming and night vision are included in present series.

Sony pros: Very wide variety of extras like night vision, high speed filming, good ergonomics, and lots of other stuff depending on particular model. Special handbook with useful filming tips.
Sony cons: They probably still don't offer a 1080p camcorder. Specific/nonstandard "top shoe" for external light or microphone.

I switched to Canon (HF 11) due to Sony's lack of 1080p, which is essential for filming sports, and because of their stubborn sticking with their Memory Stick PRO instead of SD memory card. Otherwise I would surely continue using Sony (HDR-SR12). In the meanwhile Canon caught up and offers lots of new functions in latest series. On the other hand Sony also adopted SD cards. But by my opinion, 1080p is still essential.
Mentioned camcorders are in top mid class and now succeeded by newer models.

My experience: 15 years with Sony, 3 with Canon, and tryouts with JVC and Panasonic.

Hello everybody!

I have been watching some videos on youtube, and some people have recorded it from the head of there guitar, like the guitar where the tuners are looking down the strings, it look really cool!

And i was wondering if anyone could tell me a tutorial on how to do it porfavor (please :)?

Thank you very much! x

Answer
I have used helmet cams, but eventually I got a fairly cheap "pinhole board camera" from a company that markets to security and Law Enforcement. It is the camera only, and needs to hook up to a camcorder or digital video recorder to record.

I put mine into a waterproof Nalgene bottle. I have used it on my kayak, ski-cam, bike-cam, and for external close shots of vehicles (like a tire angle) anything where I don't want to risk my good camera.

Here is a link to the security supplier, maybe just get one of their "Lipstick cams", all are pretty light. The nice thing with a pinhole, it will be in focus from a few inches in front of the camera to infinity.

Is there any camcorder with interchangeable Lens under 1K?

jonathan

possibly c-mout?

Answer
Kind of!

C-Mount cameras are mostly used in cheap-moderately priced CCD cameras for security systems. Problem is these rely on external recorders.

This system actually has some advantages. The cameras can be very small and mounted remotely to the recorder. I have used this system on Kayaks, Skis, and for numerous vehicles for external shots.

Good cameras are in the $300 range. And good card based, battery operated, pocket sized DVRs start at about $300. Take a look here for some ideas:

What is the cheapest camcorder with slow motion capacity?

best camcorder 300 dollars image
Q. I would like a camcorder for my birthday that has slow motion capacity. Under 300 dollars would be useful, but I know there aren't that many at that price. I want the best quality, however, for that price range. I don't want a camera with 5 fps, god no.

Answer
Recording at a slow frame rate won't provide you with very good slow motion playback. You want to record at a high frame rate...

For example, some Sony camcorders have a "SmoothSlowRecord" feature that allows fast frame rate capture (120 fps) for a 3 second burst. When played back at NTSC standard 30 fps, the playback takes 12 seconds (or 25% of the original speed). The Casio Exilim line has longer high frame rate capture.

If you just use the camcorder's 30 fps capture and have the video editor slow the playback, when you get to about 15 fps (or 50% of the original speed) is when the video starts being a bit jerky...

Photron and Vision Research (and others) make high speed cameras that can do 300 fps, 1,000 fps and even 3,000 fps or higher - they are expensive.

What are some good HD digital consumer camcorders to buy?

Q. I am looking for up to digital zoom 20x to 40x and around like $300 dollars. I am looking for a hadycam HD 20x to 40x digital zoom camcorder.

Answer
Your budget is not enough for a half decent hard disc drive or high definition camcorder.

The closest I can get are Canon ZR900, ZR930 miniDV tape or FS10 flash memory camcorder. They have a mic jack that no others in this price range have (from Sony or Panasonic). They are standard definition only.

I stopped suggesting any hard drive camcorders when I learned of their known problems with loud audio (vibration) and high altitude problems when the head park and no video is recorded.

"Handycam" is Sony's brandname for all consumer camcorders Sony makes. The DCR-HC62 and HC62 do not have a mic jack.

I am planning on buying a camcorder. I will be using it for making home videos. Do you have any suggestion on one that has good quality images, good zoom, good storage and is affordable.

Answer
Dependant on what you want in terms of storage. Heres some tips for you on storage:
Most reliable storage is miniDV tape and is relatively cheap, about $10 per tape for 60 mins on best quality(SP) and 90 mins on long play (LP). I use one of these and its awesome.
Then there is DVD, crap and unreliable, espeically when wanting to make home movies and they are expensive.
HDD, good idea, BUT, still in the early stages and are easy to damage as the HDD are really fragile and if you are rough with gear, then forget it, they damage easily..
Get a 3 CCD camera, they offer you both better colour and picture quality than the standard video cameras, that basically means it captures the colours on 3 separate panels, red, green, blue, rather than all on one.
Avoid, digital zoom, it means nothing and you can do it on video editing software programs, while optical zoom is the one you need to look out for. Optical physically zooms in closer and does not affect the quality.
I recommend Canon video cameras to people as they are easy to use, have very good picture quality and are very affordable. Go to the website, depending on your country, like www.canon.com for america. I use www.canon.co.nz for New Zealand. Look in video cameras, they have cameras with 20 x optical zooms, which are really good..
Good luck..

Miracle captured on video by Daniel Sanford of New Jersey. On 11/13/98, as part of the pilgrimage, he went to see the Bleeding Host of Betania at the Chapel of the Augustinian Nuns in Los Teques. The Spiritual Director, Father Mazzarella, said Daily Mass. When they finished, he opened the Tabernacle door, which contained the Bleeding Host. The Host was in flames, bleeding, and there was a pulsating heart bleeding in the center of the Host. Daniel watched this for about 30 seconds or so, then the Host returned to normal. HOWEVER, He did manage to film this miracle with his camcorder!
I thought it was pretty good PaulCyp. How should I try to evangelize people?
I believe people are atheists partially because they have a refusal to believe in miracles. I believe if I can show a miracle to them then they may be more apt to believe.

I'm looking for a digital video camera, but i'm also looking for more information about them. I'm not sure what a mini dv is. I think thats what its called. I see some cameras have sd memory sticks. I like to use my computer to make movies and chapters chapters. I had an analog camera and putting videos on the computer didn't have the best quality. Mainly I want a camera to take to events and to the races. I'm not sure what a decent megapixel would be. I don't need something top of the line. brand doesn't matter. Something practical and easy to use.

Answer
Short answer... I'd recommend Sony, first. it is the only brand of camcorder which has 'night vison'... which is, the ability to record in zero-lux (no light... complete darkness)... as well as low-lux (low light levels). No other brand can do that.

Model would depend on your needs/wants. I don't like the CD-burning thing... using battery power for the laser and the CD-transport motor, whenever the camera is turned on... : ( And then shock/vibration can be an issue... sometimes. Mini DV's are like small tapes... it's still digital. Tapes are cheap and easy... downside = with any tape, moisture/humidity can be an issue (but I've got several brands of cams, and my Sony has never let me down).

Memory sticks... well, if you can get them with a large-enough capacity, without costing an arm... it might be easier to xfer to computers, and some HDTV's. But video takes-up a lot of space, unless you trim-down on the size and quality of the image... and that's why I'm still using Mini's.

I think the top 3 are going to be Sony... Panasonic... and Sharpe. I've got a Panasonic, too... it's not bad... has a couple of features my Sony doesn't... but i still prefer Sony... cuz of the night-vison.

When you're shopping... pay attention to where the media is loaded from. Think about the cam being mounted on a tripod, and having to swap-out to fresh media... if it's loaded from the bottom, that can be a real bummer. And think about the process of swapping-out and handling DVD's, at the races... or during any event. All it takes is a spec of dust or dirt... a fingerprint... smudge... and it may or may not record properly.

Where can I go to do in-depth research on camcorders?

juilletang

I'm thinking about buying one (either a DVD or DVR) and I want to find out ALOT about what they can do. I've looked for web sites and found stuff on Wikipedia & How Stuff Works. I want a site that has practically EVERYTHING on camcorders and the different types. Can you help me?

Answer
Check out www.camcorderinfo.com if you really want to learn about camcorders. They go farther on indepth testing than most consumers have the stomach to read, and even though they can't test every single camcorder on the market, they get to most of them, let alone the important ones. You'll find info about a camcorder low light capabilities, controls, and other stuff that will allow you to make clear comparisons between models better than you will any where else. If your looking at prosumer or professional level, they've done limited reviews on some, but ultimately you'll have to just find what reviews you can on the web or sites like dv.com, videographer.com or look up cinematography.

If you just want to shoot and watch, then DVD's OK. However, I haven't read or experienced anyone that I know whose been able to get miniDVD or DVD into an editor without a lot of pain, if they got it at all! DVD camcorders are not made for the shoot and edit videographers, because when the DVD is finalized, it's formatted in the same filetype as commercial DVDs to ensure it's playability in set-top DVD players. A photographer I know bought a DVDcam which came with software for editing. As far as editing goes, it was more limited than movie maker, but what was absolutely intolerable was that it wouldn't keep the audio in sync with the video. Not good! Another way is buying a third party software to rip the video off the DVD, but it's a crapshoot getting it to display properly.

If you're going to get into editing, tests have proven that miniDV cassettes handled properly have a shelf life nearly equal to DVD! The only drawback is that it's more time consuming to transfer the video off tape than it is off of a HDD camcorder, or a DVD (assuming you can.) I'm only guessing that by "DVR", you mean HDD, because DVR actually refers to a tape or hard disc recorder/player. HDD seems really cool for the transfer rate or even being able to review footage in a nonlinear fashion in the camcorder, but make sure your nonlinear editor supports it before blowing the money, and finding out you can't make your movies.

Another place you check out is Cnet.com. It's not as extensive, but a good second opinion if the review is there. If there are any others, you may be able to find them off of those sites. Good luck to you, it's neat finding someone else who actually wants to learn about camcorders.

Answer
The Kindle, as well the Nook, are a waste of money. They can only be used to download and display e-books. Honestly, when you look at the price of the hardware and the price of the e-book files, you're really better off just going to a used book store and buying a stack of paperbacks. Sure, they aren't as slim or sexy as the Kindle, nor can you realistically cram 100s of books into your briefcase. Then again, who really needs to carry around that many books with them? And could someone please explain to me why e-books are more expensive than a brand new paperback? Come on now, $9.95-$12.95 may be cheaper than a hard cover book, but at least after I finish reading the hard cover book...I have something that looks nice on my bookshelf! Oh, and at least with a real book, you can lend or sell it to someone. Whereas, with an e-book, you can't.

The iPad can also be used as an e-book reader, but other than that it's really just an over-sized iPod Touch. Need a calendar? I'm sure there's an app for that...for a price. Most iPad apps range from $0.99 to $5.95. The iPad is expensive. Even the low end model with its piddly 16GB of storage and WiFi is $450. A built-in 3G modem with service from AT&T is another $200 + $35/mo for service. iPad's with more storage, up to 64GB, are also available but you're looking at more money - nearly $900(!) for a top of the line iPad...which doesn't even include a fully working web browser. Seriously, your iPod Touch is a better solution here, if for no other reason than it's more portable than the large awkward iPad.

I don't know much about HP's Slate, other than folks think it could "kill" the iPad.

Honestly, I just want the guts of a Netbook crammed inside touch-screen tablet. None of this stupid "there's an app for that..." nickel and diming garbage. Give me a standard working browser that actually works with YouTube, Hulu, and has honest to goodness Flash support. That's all I really want.

Which is why I'm waiting to see what ASUS will come out with later this year. Supposedly, they're working on a netbook that will ship with Google's Chrome OS. Essentially, it's just stripped down Linux running Google's Chrome browser, and that's it. Speculation is this thing will cost under $300, causing other netbook makers to follow suit, causing a very consumer-friendly price war.

Where can I find a memory card for my camcorder?

Number 1

I have a Jazz Dv153 pocket camcorder and it needs a 2gb memory card. I looked all over Ebay and I couldn't find one. Are there any other websites that sell these types of memory cards?

Answer
The Jazz DV153 uses SD (Secure Digital) or MMC (Multi Media Card) 2GB cards which are very common and are available at retailers such as Walmart, Bestbuy, RadioShack, etc. Or on-line at amazon.com, Buy.com, etc. Brands like Kingston, SanDisk, PNY are are well known brands. Some cards sold on Ebay are import non-brand cards and may not meet industry standards and thus the integrity of such cards will be in question. You want to trust that your video is safe on a brand name card.

what brand of camcorder/video camera should I buy?

tosachi1

I want to buy an affordable camcorder (under $ 300) that I can use to take home videos and EASILY transfer them to my macbook and edit them on imovie. Sound quality is also very importnat to me. Other than that I don't need anything fancy. Does anyone have any personal recommendations? Also, what would be the advantage of buying a camcorder as opposed to an ipod touch that takes videos?

Answer
HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video

I have a Gigaware 5-Megapixel HD 1080p Camcorder with 3.0" Touchscreen which is supposed to have a webcam option. I installed the driver CD that came with it and every time I try to launch the webcam option it says it is not connected or is being used. Anyone know how to get it working?

Answer
You need to check in the camera settings. There should be an option of when connected to computer you want to use it as USB Storage device or Web cam.

Or something like use as webcam..maybe you have to set it up...

refer to the user guide?

What is a good 1080p webcam for youtube and green screen capabilities?

Mark M

I am looking to start a VLOG in my spare time, and I am looking for a solid and affordable 1080p webcam that has good quality video so that green screening won't look choppy. I am aware that I will need good lighting for the green screening, but that is taken care of, I have a good set up as long as the camera works well.

My son is a high school senior. Next year he wants to go to community college and live at home (at least that is reasonably affordable) instead of going away to school. He wants to take an expensive major however. Video production. We have been able to save about $5,000 towards his education. We are not wealthy people. The rest will have to come from loans and maybe a grant or scholarship.
We are looking at some "entry level" pro cameras in the $1500-1800 range. That's about 1/3 of our savings for his education.
Models include these:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/518555-REG/Sony_HVRHD1000U_HVR_HD1000U_Digital_High_Definition.html
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/745707-REG/Sony_HXR_MC2000U_HXR_MC2000U_Shoulder_Mount_AVCHD.html
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/878341-REG/Panasonic_hmc40kit_AG_HMC40_AVCCAM_HD_Camcorder.html
and
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/749467-REG/Canon_4922B002_XA10_HD_Professional_Camcorder.html

My concern is he starts September 2013 so these products may not even be available by then or others will be available. We hope he graduates May 2015. He tells us when he graduates he will maybe find a freelance job or shoot local cable news, build up some experience, maybe after 2 years go for a B.A. at least part time.
Is anything we buy him in 2013 (summer) going to be any use to him as a working professional in 2015 (summer)? So let's say you are a class of 2012 graduate with an AAS in video production. The camera you purchased in the summer of 2010 when you first started, do you still use it professionally? Can you make anything doing freelance news videos, PR videos or local account commercials with this equipment?
We're going to do everything we can to help him. No doubt he will still be living at home in the summer of 2015. By then he's going to have a student loan to pay off. We have a 2005 Hyundai Accent that we are going to give him for college. I hope that thing still runs when it is 10 years old and he isn't making car payments on top of that. The thing has 120,000 miles on it but runs really well. I just fear when he graduates he's going to be in deep debt and have limited employment. I may be wrong. What do you think? Thanks.

Answer
Hi "Upwardly Mobile":

Fellow Contributor "L" covered most of the bases quite well, but the only point he didn't underscore is that MOST good video & film production programs at community colleges HAVE the cameras, lights, mikes, tripods, and other gear that the students will learn on & use.

When I went to a local (but nationally prominent) university with a Broadcast/Film Dept., portable video was still fairly new, but all the film cameras, tripods, & light kits were supplied by the Department for students to "check out" as-needed for class projects.

And most video production students start out with Studio Production techniques (where it's easier for groups to learn 3-point lighting, camera setup & tripod/dolly operation, shot composition, audio techniques & mixing, etc.). No need for portable field gear there.

For field production & Electronic News Gathering, a good college will have a fair number of camcorders for students to use & check out (if needed for outside-of-class projects).

The same is true for Editing Software & computer workstations. Some college programs might be economizing and making students supply their own laptops for this, but all the major software companies offer Academic Editions of their normally-expensive edit suites at discounted prices. And of course, nowadays, apps like iMovie (Mac) and Movie Maker (PC) come "free" as part of the operating system and can accomplish what older (and expensive) software used to do, as far as basic editing.

As "L" mentioned, do a bit of "homework" yourself by contacting the community college's department head & instructors for your son's chosen major. Tour the facilities (studio and edit suites) and ask about the "equipment room" for student project gear. See what textbooks (a major expense) are required, and whether computer/laptop & software expense will be part of what's expected of your son. Only if there's little-or-no camcorder gear (or no hands-on studio cameras) would I recommend buying anything like the models from B+H that you listed.

Almost every cable TV & freelance video job I've had over the past 30 years has "supplied" (rented or company-owned) the cameras & grip gear I needed. I bring my own gear only when it's a "favor" or when what I have is better-suited to the task, or they want a "director with gear". My point being, your son doesn't need to own =any= camera gear to make a living freelancing. A good camera operator can stay busy in almost any part of the country, with just his/her skills. (Same for sound mixers & boom/wireless mike operators.)

hope this helps, and hope it saves you some money,
--Dennis C.

Total Price: $1,382.99

I heard that the Intel i7 processors were amazing. I think this will be really good for what I do. I make Gaming videos with my HD PVR. CONSOLE GAMES. The only PC game I play is Minecraft, so I won't be doing a lot of gaming, strictly video editing and rendering.

Will this computer be great for rendering at blazing speeds? It takes my current computer around 10 hours to render a 35 minute HD video. I want that to be rendered in at least in an hour.

I'm also going to be buying the Sony Vegas Pro Suite for it and the Adobe Master Collection later on. The Vegas Pro Suite has 2 vital pieces of software to help my production value look a lot better. That is Sony Vegas Pro 12 and HitFilm Ultimate 2. These both are GPU accelerated and here are their requirements:

----Sony Vegas Pro 12----

Microsoft® Windows Vista® 64-bit SP2, Windows 7 64-bit, or Windows® 8 64-bit operating system
2 GHz processor (multicore or multiprocessor CPU recommended for HD or stereoscopic 3D)
1.2 GB hard-disk space for program installation
750 MB hard-disk space for content installation
4 GB RAM (8 GB recommended)
OHCI-compatible IEEE-1394DV card (for DV and HDV capture and print-to-tape)
USB 2.0 connection (for importing from AVCHD, XDCAM EX, NXCAM, or DVD camcorders)
512 MB GPU memory
Windows-compatible sound card
DVD-ROM drive (for installation from a DVD only)
Supported CD-recordable drive (for CD burning only)
Supported DVD-R/-RW/+R/+RW (for DVD burning only)
Supported BD-R/-RE drive (for Blu-ray Disc⢠burning only)
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.51 (included on application disc)
Apple® QuickTime® 7.1.6 or later for reading and writing QuickTime files
Internet Connection (for Gracenote musicID Service)
GPU-accelerated video processing and rendering require an OpenCLâ¢-supported NVIDIA®, AMD/ATIâ¢, or Intel® GPU with 512MB memory or more. Detailed specifications and driver requirements can be found at: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/vegaspro/gpuacceleration

----HitFilm Ultimate 2----

Recommended system requirements

Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Quad or AMD Phenom X4
RAM: 4GB
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX or AMD/ATI Radeon HD 4850 with at least 1024 MB video memory and support for OpenGL 2.0.
View more graphics cards which meet our recommended requirements â
Screen resolution: 1280 Ã 800 in 32-bit color mode
Sound card: Internal sound card
Hard disk space: 300MB free disk space for program installation
Internet connection: Required for online activation and HitFilm.com web services

Intel 64-bit Itanium (IA64) enterprise class processors are NOT supported.

Will my build be able to use these flawlessly and render very quickly?

Also, I am wanting to have a TRIPLE MONITOR SET UP. Is this computer capable of that? I heard you needed 2 graphic cards or something like that to have a three monitor set up. Is that true?

I don't want a Mac. I like Windows 7 the most and I am most familiar with PCs.

In conclusion, will this help me a lot or should I go in a different direction?

The PC was created here: http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/cto.do#anchor-top

Thanks a lot!

Answer
Everything looks good but I would definitely get a bigger HD and a more powerful power supply. 300W probably won't be nearly enough power with that setup, and 500GB doesn't seem like all that much space nowadays, especially for storing videos.

How to interpret the zoom power indicators on a camcorder?

best digital camcorder zoom on Top rated digital camera 2013 | Best digital camera reviews | Best ...
best digital camcorder zoom image

A H

I have a photography background with 35mm film and digital cameras. I am on the market to buy a camcorder and I would like to understand the "reach" of the zoom when it mentions things like "10X optical"? I can easily figure out the reach of, say, a 75-300mm lens in 35mm film cameras. How does the camcorder zoom labels compare to 35mm film camera zooms?

Answer
It is as simple as it seems.

10x zoom means that at 0% zoom or no zoom, the image is at the same size you can see with the naked eye from the same spot and vantage point as the camcorder, and at 100% zoom or maximum zoom, the same image is now ten times larger than its original size (and part of the image may now be so big it went our of frame or out of view).

If you are talking about focal distance or in your case "focal length", that is a different issue. Most built-in camcorder lenses can focus from macro to infinity. In most cases, you can find an adapter to adapt a 35mm camera lens onto the front of the built-in camcorder lens, and then, focal length and "reach" come into play because your camera lens is based on f-stops. Several professional camcorders (such as the Sony PMW-EX3) also allow the removal of the camcorder's lens and the placement of another lens including those from 35mm cameras to be installed instead for specialized filming situations.

Looking for a low cost digital camcorder?

Sam

I need a digital camcorder that has A/V INPUT. It must have a/v input. I don't care about the build quality as long as it works. It wont be seeing much action so no need to be expensive. No walmart or ebay answers without links please.

Answer
I have a Sony Digital 8 camcorder. It says on the side A/V output which is the same as input. Also S Video Out and DV IN/OUT. This is a great camcorder that got very little use. 560x Digital Zoom - Nightshot.
I have no idea what it goes for....I paid $600 bucks for it at Best Buy but I guess I can sell it for $150 and it has a remote control as well. Not sure if this camcorder is the one you'd be interested in or not. Have a good one.

If so, can you tell me the brand name and the model number?
Sony DVC2345 for example.

Answer
My Panasonic NV-GS300 has one.

I have a Toshiba X150 camcorder and I need to put a external microphone?

Andrea Jos

I'm doing a vlog and I was told that I needed the sound to be louder. By doing so I needed an external microphone. I didn't see any jack for an external microphone, but there is a mini usb and mini hdmi jack. Can I get a microphone for that or is there a better way?

Answer
Your X150 does not have a mic jack. USB is for transferring video and stills out of the camera and is not connected to the recording area of the camera; The HDMI connection sends audio and video out of the camera to a monitor or recording device only. No inbound audio or video.

You can record the audio separately with a mic connected to your computer or with an external audio recording device. When you edit, sync the externally recorded audio with the audio captured by the camcorder then mute the camcorder's audio.

Or... use the video editor to increase the audio it recorded. Maybe that will be good enough.

Which one is better for take film in dark

I want only compare these in this field

Answer
They are not in the same class.

Both are hard disc drive based - right off the bat, they would fall off my list just for that... but here goes.

Both have a built-in infrared emitter for zero light video capture ("NightShot"). Video will be poor and in black and white. I HOPE the XR500 would be better in the dark, but combining AVCHD compression + small lens + small imaging chip, the low light behavior is similar.

The ENTRY level SR65 has no mic jack. It records only to a very highly compressed MPEG2 standard definition video format. This typically requires conversion to a more useful format before editing. The only audio control the SR65 has is in the menu - "Normal" or "Low" gain (for loud audio environments). It retails for about $500 if you can find it. Sony discontinued the product,

The XR500 is an expensive consumer camcorder with a mic jack and manual audio control. It saves to a very highly compressed high definition format called AVCHD. The MTS files can be a bear to work with.

For editing, your computer needs to be fairly new (and really fast), have LOTS of RAM and a hard drive that is NOT the startup drive so you have a place to store the video project files. Older versions of video editors cannot deal with AVCHD video. MovieMaker can't deal with AVCHD video at all. The current versions of Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere float to the top. Or, in the Mac environment, iMovie '08 or newer or the current versions of Final Cut (Express or Pro).

does sony HDR-CX580v have nightshot or infrared?

Toby

will it work with IR LED attachment?
i've read online that it does nott have nightshot and cant see in complete darkness.
but this website below says it has nightshot infrared system
http://www.abt.com/product/59814/Sony-HDRCX580V.html

i dont know which is right. anybody that owns or has owned this handycam tell me whether this cam have or not have night vision? or see infrared light?
thanks

Answer
Read the manual:
http://www.docs.sony.com/release/HDR-CX250_CX260V_CX580V_PJ260_PJ260V_PJ580_PJ580V_PJ600_PJ600V_XR260V_EN_ES.pdf
No reference to "NightShot" or "SuperNightShot".

Read the marketing specifications sheet:
http://www.docs.sony.com/release/specs/HDRCX580VB_mksp.pdf
No reference to "NightShot" or "SuperNightShot".

According to the link you provided, the top portion - supplied by the retailer - has NightShot listed - but the bottom part - supplied by the manufacturer - does not. I would contact the retailer and have them confirm. The HDR-CX580v does not have NightShot.

Compare this to a model that does have NightShot:
http://store.sony.com/p/Sony-96GB-HD-Camcorder-with-Projector/en/p/HDRPJ760V#specifications
under "Advance Features".
