Say What!?

I ordered a camcorder off amazon, but I now no longer want it. Can I return the item while its shipping and get a full refund for it?

And will the money be returned to my bank account?

Answer
No - you'll need to wait until it arrives and then pay to return it. Seriously - you really expected them to refund before it arrives?

how do i upload videos from my Sony DCRSR57E Handycam Camcorder to PC or Mac ?

Q. Hi I brought a Sony DCRSR57E Handycam Camcorder from amazon about 4 months ago and it came with no lead or anything to transfer videos. Now I really need to upload on either Windows PC or Mac I have both so please help, thank you !

Answer
If you check the manual
http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/4124309111.pdf
refer to page 5 - "Supplied items". USB cable is one of them. Item B. The other is the AV cable to connect to a TV to watch playback of captured video.

This is the same USB cable that is used by lots of consumer grade "personal electronics" like cell phones, MP3 or other multimedia players... Mini-USB on one side connects to the camcorder's USB port (see page 23 for location on the camcorder) and the other is a "normal" sized USB connector for the computer. I have used the USB cable that came with my BlackBerry to transfer media files from Sony camcorders and Apple iPods and Canon digital still cameras... to my Macs and HP computers.

Generally, when you put the camcorder in Play mode (be sure to plug the camcorder to power mains, too), the hard drive will mount like any other USB-connected external mass storage device.

The Sony standard def hard drive (and flash memory) camcorders record to a MPG file type - many times, the computer's operating system and video editor cannot deal with these files directly. This may not be the easiest way, but it is the most consistent and flexible...

Download and install HandBrake
http://handbrake.fr/
Copy the MPG files to the computer.
Launch HandBrake and transcode the MPG files to something the video editor can deal with. Lower compression is better - but the files will be large.
Windows Movie Maker likes WMV files and Macintosh iMovie likes MOV and MP4 files (among others).
When the transcoding is done, Quit HandBrake and launch the video editor.
Drag the transcoded files to the capture area or timeline (or "clips" pane)... edit. Save.
Export or Save As whatever final video file type and compression you want (and the video editor is capable of providing).

I have a Panasonic SDR H60 camcorder and Mac OS X 10.4.11 computer. I use iMovie '08. I have been able to upload video from the camera directly to iMovie before, but now I can't. My dad used the camera on his PC with the software provided with the camera, and I'm wondering it that may have messed up the ability of the camera to work with the Mac. How can I get the camera to be recognized by iMovie again?

Answer

How can I connect my Sony camcorder to my mac computer?

When I connect my Sony Dcr-Trv11 camcorder to my mac via firewire, the mac does not recognize it. I have an imac osx tiger and imovie. I have found places online that say that this is possible, but I have had no luck yet. does anyone have any suggestions? thanks

Answer
The Sony DCR-TRV11 camcorder is miniDV tape based.

What are you expecing the Mac to do? Nothing will automatically "pop up".

Connecting a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable to the camcorder's DV port and the Mac's firewire port - with the camcorder in "Play" or "VCR" mode, launch iMovie,
Name the project,
select the video project destination folder,
select DV (presuming you captured the video in 4:3 standard definition mode - select DV widescreen if the video was captured in that mode.
Create.
The iMovie Import screen should appear.

You did not tell us which Mac. It is possible that the Firewire port is inactive. System Preferences: Network: Port Status. Be sure there is a check mark in the firewire box.

It is also possble that the firewire cable or the camcordeer's firewire port is bad.

you'd probaly do better with this question over on the camcorder section. This 'camera' section deals mostly with flash photograph type stuff.

Anyway, here's a good tutorial that should help:

I'm looking for a camera for preferably under $300 for skiing movies, that means it has to handle at least 60ffs, full hd, and also have good focus for interviews. It dosnt have to have auto focus or auto aperture, and i would prefer it to be manual. Thanks!

Answer
Sony DCR-VX2100 3CCD MiniDV Handycam Camcorder w/12x Optical Zoom is just the right size when it comes to handheld filming. Most of the weight of the camera is towards the front, but is perfectly balanced from the top handle. The camera is also not too long, allowing you to get closer to the subject when using a fisheye and allowing you to manipulate the camera in tight quarters.

Can anyone give me some easy to digest pointers on choosing a digital camcorder?

There is so much choice, and all i can remember is from my manual/SLR days.....this time i'm looking to collect quality images and sound, documentary style....mostly interviews and fly-on the wall stuff. Got a medium budget, gotta account for all the accessories. Any good search domains? Any brilliant suggestions? Best answer to the person who points me the most successful direction. need to know what to look for really...all these terms that i don't understand....

Answer
Tape is not dead. It may be dying, especially in the consumer market, but it is not dead, and until we receive its equal or better, tape will be here to stay.

Tape =/= analog, but analog be put to tape, unless it's film. All the formats listed below are digital. The major thing you need to consider is what you want: image quality, ease of use, and ease of editing. Even if you don't plan on editing now, it still applies. MiniDV tapes offer the best image quality out of DVDs, or hard drive cams. (from now on, when I compare image quality, I mean in a cam of a similar quality/price, but with a different format. Obviously an $700 DVD cam will outperform a $200 miniDV cam). MiniDVs are also the easiest to edit. DVDs, on the other hand, are the Antichrist of editing formats, but they are the easiest to use (sort of), by the fact that you can pop one into your DVD player and watch your raw unedited footage instantaneously. Finally HDD cams. They try to combine ease of use with some editing functionality. Unfortunately, the only thing that HDD cams really have an advantage of is that they don't have to use any recording media. Transferring clips to your computer and watching them are relatively painless, but the same can't be said about editing. And MOST finally, HDV cams. You DON'T want these, unless: you have a 3.4 ghz computer or dual core 2 ghz processors, at least 1 GB of ram, an HDTV, and a blu-ray burner, disc, and player (if you don't want to export to tape).

Ok now that you've picked your format, you have all these other options to choose from. Basically, if its anything under $1000, the features will stay the same, except for Panasonic. All the other companies will have emphasis on automatic features, but the higher end Panasonic miniDV cameras have 3ccds for better color, and give you some prosumer controls for a less-than-prosumer price. If you want a documentary style images and sound, the Panasonic pv-gs300 or pv-gs500 may well be the camera for you. There was a 400, but you probably won't find one unless it's on eBay, but if you do, and you planned on getting a pv-gs series cam, get the 400. Trust me on this. Also if you want good sound for interviews, the above cams all come with mic ports and shoes (hot or cold, not too sure). Stick a $200 rode videomic on top, and you're good to go. Like I said, if you're just looking for auto functions, then any other manufacturer will be fine. I know I kind of rambled on and on in some areas, and didn't cover everything, so if you ever need more help, feel free to contact me from my answers profile. Hope this helps!

What is a good camera for film and cinema?

Ok, I want to start making my own films. I was thinking of getting the Canon Rebel T2i but I dont know if it is a good camera. Please give me some advice, thanks! Oh and i want the price to be under $800. Thanks!

Answer
Hello,

I myself am looking for the right film camera for me, but the camera you say that you are thinking of getting, is not really for filming. Yes, the cameras such as the Canon Rebel T2i, Canon 50d/7D/550D are great cameras, they are not for film. Although they shoot film, they are for picture quality, and mainly if you want to use these cameras for filming, the quality will be OKAY unless it is still footage. What you want, is a camcorder which are mainly for film.
For example, the Panasonic Pro AG-HMC150 3CCD AVCHD 24fps Camcorder (http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-AG-HMC150-AVCHD-24fps Camcorder/dp/B001DKELYC/ref=pd_zg_rss_tr_e_172421_2) is slightly over the price of the Canon 7D. BUT, this camera is strictly for film, while the canon 7D, or the camera you are looking at, are basically for picture. So all in all, what you want is a camcorder and you can look at this site that gives you the "Top Rated Camcorders of 2010-2011", and it will display the price, features and reviews for many camcorders!

The Canon Rebl T2i shoots some pretty great video just as good as the Canon 7D, and I will post a link in the "sources" of some really helpful filming tips, where they are using the Rebel T2i to film the video.

But for the price under $800, I would look on that site for a handheld HD camcorder, or get the camera you want, but the Canon 7D is a very good option with proper lenses too, but the price is steep of $1500-$2000, plus $300-$400 for a good lens. :/
-Also you must remember that the camera is not what gives you good quality; it may help, but it is very minimal. You will need a good Lens for your camera to give it the best quality possible, and also look into lighting, and adjusting color contrasting and color grading when you are EDITING the film (look up some tutorials on youtube to adjust color to give it that cinematic look) so that way you have the best possible image. (I will give some links in the bottom that helped me with some film makig tips) Hope this helps :)

How can I hook up two external mics to a Canon 7D?

Jonathan S

Right now I'm using one external mic that's attached to the top of my Canon 7D (Optek).

How can I hook up another microphone that I could use on a boom pole? There's only one input.. how can I get another?

Answer
You are pushing beyond the design intentions of a dSLR with a video feature.

A real video camera has 4 microphone inputs standard as well as other.

Here is a link to the video cameras used specifically for shooting commercial video, either from a script or shooting professional sports.

I got an email from my isp saying I violated some kind of copyright law. That got me wondering. Is there anyway to know whether a site I visit collects my ip address or any other kind of identifying information?

Lets say I go to a site on camcorders, can the site collect my info and then sell it to marketing people? Can I expect to get regular mail from Sony, Canon, and others on their new products?

Answer
There is not really a way to see if sites are collecting your information as it happens, but the best you can do is try to prevent it from happening in the first place. Normally you have to consent to things like that in some way. Look for the fine print on any web page you visit. If it says they can and/or will sell or give your information to a third party, leave the site. Most sites, however, will have a box that you check that will say something to the effect of "Yes! I would like to receive notices from Canon and its affiliates regarding new products and special offers in my e-mail!" and another one that says "I do not wish to receive e-mails from Canon and its affiliates." In that situation, you would obviously click "No" because clicking "Yes" would allow Canon to share your information with it's "affiliates." Disabling cookies in your browser will help as well.

which digital camera is the best for downloading photos in PC?

SPIRITUAL

I have a Sony which is good in lenses but when trying to downloading software from Sony is a nightm are!
Which compact digital camera is jut "plug and go" in relation to computer? I mean which digital brand is the more easy to deal, in relation to any computer operation system?
I didn't have any problem with my Canon, but I am having lots of problems with Sony digital cameras and camcorders (Sony'camcorder software even block my PC cd room when updating)

Answer
You can take off the memory card of ANY digital camera, plug it in a compatible USB card reader, connect the card reader to an open USB slot in the computer, and use My Computer (Windows) or Finder (Mac) to COPY, DELETE, and MOVE files from the memory card to the computer and vice versa and even format the memory card (as FAT32) to empty it and give you more space for new pictures. If there is a problem encountered using this method, it is usually the memory card itself at fault and the only solution is to replace it. You DO NOT need to the software that came with the camera at all. Just keep the CD in a safe place for future reference.
