Do all JVC everios have the same size thread?

Many JVC Everios have no thread an cannot support a lens filer or add-on lens. The GZ series are consumer grade. Your GZ-HM320BU was new in 2010. Consumer cams change about every 18 months, and yours is no longer available. This does not mean it is somehow "bad" or "obsolete - it is neither... but just the nature of consumer electronics.

JVC does not exactly make it easy on their website. But follow these steps:

On any of them, click on "Compare".
Under "Select models to compare", click the top one to select it, then the right arrow. Or shift-click to select multiples (or all) and click the arrow to have them appear in the window to the right. Click "Display Chart". Scroll down to "Filter Diameter." Some have a 40.5mm or 46.0mm spec, but most are blank, hence, no threads. Remember (or write down) the models with the filter spec, then go back and see if those are any your friend wants to get.

That 37mm fisheye will also fit any other manufacturer's camcorder with the same 37mm filter spec. If it is decided to get a camcorder with a different filter diameter spec, see if you can find a "step-up" or "step-down" ring to be an adapter.

What is the best computer and camcorder setup for amateur film?

I know the best HD camcorders used for movies can run tens of thousands of dollars, as can a high end computer with good editing software. I want to know what it would take to put together an enjoyable film with good edit and detail at an affordable cost by most middle class Americans, also will I need more than just a good computer and camera?

I agree with the simple response from G. Due to the range of equipment and expenses, that does not help you much with any detailed shopping list. And the description of your project is too vague to understand any real requirements the project has.

And just because you are low budget does not mean you get to take shortcuts and go cheap. Inexpensive, maybe, but not cheap.

You also need to understand the equipment limitations and be VERY fanatical about not going outside those known or learned limits. For example, if the lighting is good and bright, then any camcorder can capture good quality, non grainy video. If the video has lots of action, do not use a camcorder that applies lots of compression to the video stream. If there is dialog, the mics MUST be close to the people speaking.

Beyond these basic technicals, a compelling story, LOTS of planning (concept, outline, script, story board, shotlist - and sticking to it) along with talent , wardrobe, make up, continuity, sound design, editing skill and creativity will contrbute to a successful project.

If you cut these corners, the project will most likely not be successful. The reason the pros do what they do is because they can make money. If they could save money by using consumer grade camcorders, they would use them because that means they would not need to buy the huge expensive stuff they use and that would mean more $ in their pocket. They have learned that the expensive stuff is more cost effective because it has a wider opportunity for use - like big lenses means better lowlight shots and good XLR mics means more realistic audio... And they know to use the equipment within its capabilites.

Read up on the equipment used for "Slumdog Millionaire", "Paranormal Activity" and "Blair Witch Project", be sure to develop your project management skills... And understand various legal "partnership" entities can do to help keep your personal assets protected when there is injury or copyright issues with the project.

There is WAY more to successful "filmmaking" than picking up the cheapest equipment you can find and capturing a few feet of video. Even "reality shows" use a script... And keep in mind that "middle America" is what drives the quality level of the productions you see in theaters - they are who buy the tickets. To think otherwise is naive.

And just in case... The big project equipment is rarely purchased by a specific project - it is leased. They generally use film - not video. Audio is not captured by a camcorder, but by using a totally separate audio system.

Tripods and other steadying devices (dolly trucks, "Steadicam" systems, camera cranes, etc.), many different wired and wireless mics, stands, cables, power, location monitors, craft services, legal services, make up, wardrobe, lighting and existing lighting control, "studio teachers" (if minors are involved), location scouting, permits and permission, soundtrack music legalities and copyright, releases and tracking, insurance coverage, and a bazllion other things neede to be addressed. And we haven't gotten to the camera yet! So...

Sony HVR-Z5 or above.
Canon XHA1 or above.
Panasonic AG-HVX200 or above.
JVC GY-HM100 or above.

Any of these are "entry level" so the content and editing MUST be excellent. Don't forget audio - there may be a local audio engineer who also does films...

And a huge NEW iMac mxed out on RAM with a few terabytes of external hard drive space (RAID1 multi drve array preferredin case a drive crashes, you don't want the project to die) running Final Cut Pro being used by someone who has experience with it. Or a HIGH END Windows tower running Sony Vegas Pro or Adobe Premiere.

How are you planning to distrbute it or get paid? Most theaters don't work directly with the film's producer...

When you look at the ridiculous pricing of the prestige edition an extra 20 bucks on top of the game price is nothing dude. 150 bucks compared to 80 bucks...20 dollars is like what a movie these days? A half a tank of gas? The hardened comes with a steelbook casing for the game, a collectors medal in its own case as well i think, 4 co op zombie maps from world at war, and a flightsuit avatar outfit for your Playstation Network or Xbox live. The prestige just comes with a toy car, yeah it has a video camera and sound recording but honestly you could just buy a 10 dollar rc car and tape a camcorder to it if you really want something like that. But its also the collectors type of thing also. But if your just in for the gaming hardened is the way to go dude. I think the zombie co op maps or soooo worth the extra 20 bucks. Because thats 5 maps all put together that you have to play just in case multiplayer flunks. Which i doubt but i still have some worries. Sadly...im getting the prestige edition -____-" because when i went to gamestop they said they didnt have anymore hardened editions and prestige editions were about to go too. So just incase dont get your hopes up when you go down to your gamestop. Call ahead of time and ask them if you can still preorder the hardened edition. Since gamestop is like a major business found everywhere now it might be the same. If they dont have it get from like amazon or bestbuy or walmart or something. Hope that helps. Consumer level HD camcorders have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer level HD camcorders all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video. Not to mention, but the computer you upload your HD files to jas to have at least a 1 GB video card and a separate Audio card that can support Direct X 9 technology, you normal every day computer has massive troubles with HD video. Consumer level HD camcorders interpolate the video. This means they take one frame, make up the next 4 or 5 frames, take a frame and repeat this, over and over, for the remainder of the video, every video it takes is like this. With a MiniDV tape camcorder, record 60 or 90 minutes ( camcorder settings), 90 seconds or less to change a tape and record for 60 or 90 more and repeat till you run out of tapes.

You can get a Canon ZR960 for $250. It is a MiniDV tape camcorder, has a MIC jack. You will need a Firewire (IEEE1394) card ($25 to 30) for the computer and a Firewire cable (less than 10) to be able to transfer video to your computer. To say this is not HD, think about this. It would cost in excess of $3500 to get a HD camcorder that could equal the video Quality of a $250 Canon MiniDV tape camcorder.

Getting a HD camcorder is taking a step backward in Video Quality. Hd camcorder Interpolate the video, which means every 4th or 5th frame of a video is of what is being video-graphed, the other frames are filled in by the camcorder, thus giving you not true video. MiniDV tape camcorders give every frame of every shot and usually cost less.

Just to be clear - the Sony DCR-SR47 is an entry level, consumer grade, internal hard drive based camcorder. It is nowhere near "best".

Personally, I do not recommend internal hard drive based camcorders because of their known problems with vibration, loud audio, and high altitude... they can stop recording under these conditions. Flash memory and miniDV tape do not sffer from these problems. As well, HDD camcorders can be VERY challenging when the camcorder breaks and the video has not already been transferred to a computer. The removable media used by miniDV tape and flash memory can be used by other camcorders so access to the video is easier after camcorder failure.

The video file formats are the same when comparing HDD and flash memory - assuming the lenses and imaging chips are the same, the video quality from these camcorders is the same. The only difference is the storage media. Standard definition DV (used by miniDV tape based camcorders) is much less compressed and results in better video quality - again, assuming the lenses and imaging chips are the same size as the "equivalent" HDD and flash memory camcorders... MiniDV tape based camcorders require your computer to have a firewire port. HDD and flash memory camcorders use USB to copy the files - but many times those files need to be converted using a utility like MPEG StreamClip before a video editor can deal with it.

I strongly suggest you stay with miniDV tape (Sony DCR-HC62, Panasonic PV-GS320, Canon ZR960) or flash memory (Canon FS100) and skip hard disc drive camcorders. The ZR960 and FS100 have a mic jack (but no manual audio control) that other camcorders in this class do not have.

How much 720p video can 8GB if it is 60 FPS?

I recently bough a Kodak Zi8 Pocket Camcorder and I need to buy an SD card for it. If I purchase an 8GB card, approximately how much video can I hold if I use 720p video at 60 FPS? I'm not planning on using 1080p as that would require much more space.

most cameras that record to flash memory use 6 mbps as the datarate. that is independent of whether the frames are 480i, 720p or 1080i. 720p at 60 fps and 1080i at 30 fps are about equivalent rates anyway. but with compression, they all run 6 mbps unless you are using a pro-sumer camera that can use faster flash cards, one that costs about 10x the price of a Zi8. 8 GB should be about 100 minutes.

After I graduate high school, I plan on attending either Grand Canyon University or Northern Arizona University to get a degree in Digital Film. I understand that these colleges will have cameras that I will be able to check out, but I'm really considering purchasing one of my own. the longer you postpone your purchase decision, the better it will be.

1. you still have a lot to learn about what features are important in a video camera and what is just sales fluff.
2. technology is changing rapidly, and what might look as a good option now might not be so satisfactory 4 years from now.
3. you most likely will graduate to something more sophisticated than a MacBook Pro, and using that as the criteria for limiting camera selection is not wise.
4. depending on how you intend to use your college education, you may find that a dSLR is a truly poor choice for professional work. some projects require more than 12 minutes of continuous video recording.

How early should I get there?

Warped Tour is essentially an all-age tour. I've seen people as young as 5 and as old as 60 attend.

Because this is a general admission show (there are no assigned seats!) you may want to get in line early. This is also because the band schedule (what time every band plays and at what stage) is not created and announced until the day of the show. So, you may want to get in line maybe 30 minutes to an hour before doors open. Once you arrive at doors and get in, find your way to a large, red blow-up schedule; this shows you the bands that will play at what stage and at what time. Bring a piece of paper and pen to write down all the bands you want to see, what stage they will be playing at and at what time. However, though there are only about 6 main stages, there are around 5 "unofficial" stages (for example, the Kevin Says Stage) that the blow up schedule does not have on there, so keep an eye out for those.

Bring enough money for food, water, and merch. Food will easily run you up to $10, water about $3 per bottle, and merch: t-shirts $10-$20, hoodies $25-45, shorts $20-30. From my experiences, Warped Tour is known for slightly cheaper band merchandise. I usually bring around $100, but I know others who bring more. Please make sure you keep your money in a safe place. Some Warped Tour attendees will not hesitate to snatch your persona

Are videos on the Canon SX10 as good as the one on the Canon FS100 video camera?

I need a nice (not HD) video camera. I decided that an SD-based Canon FS100 would at least be close to the image quality on my old Sony TRV250 Hi-8 camcorder. Rather than pay for the FS100 alone, would the video quality on a new Canon SX10IS be about the same as well as giving me a nice still cam?

You can't quite get both in a single model, yet.

By spec, the Canon's movie mode is decent enough... it's recording at 640x480, which is a "square pixel" version of the standard 720x480 that pretty much all NTSC SD camcorders use... slighly lower pixel count, but it's not a huge issue. Canon still recording tends to be in same ballpark as lower cost video camera video... I have not used this particular model, but in general, I can state this. 30fps will be a bit more "movie like" than the 60i (interlaced) you would get with regular video. If you're making DVDs, you might notice this, particularly with sports and other fast moving things. If your goal is computer video, the non-interlaced video from the SX100 might actually be preferable (I don't know if the FS100 has a progressive mode... most of Canon's HD models do today).

So look at compression.. the SX10 can record 1 hr. 30 min on an 8GB flash card, while the FS100 at top quality can record 1hr. 50min.. That sounds like the SX10 is actually using less compression, but we have to check the format. The FS100 records in MPEG-2, as used on all DVDs. At that bitrate, the FS100 is slightly better than DVD quality.

Checking into the SX10, I find that, like most digital still cameras, the SX10 uses Motion-JPEG for video, which is very similar to the DV format. To DV and MJPEG are simpler compression schemes than MPEG-2, so you need more bits per second to get the same quality. DV camcorders use 25Mb/s, while the SX10 is recording around 11Mb/s here. So I would expect this video to be relatively low quality, compared to DVD or the FS100, at least in terms of digital noise (artifacts and other ugly bits due to compression). It might still look fine, but it's probably more like one of the FS100 "long play" modes rather than top quality.

Next is sound.. most digital still cameras have pretty evil microphones, in mono, and no way to add an external one. The SX10 is a bit better than this.. you can't add a mic, but at least it's recording in stereo. Also, the mics are apparently just above the lens housing, and thus less probe to being blocked by your hands (a real problem with many still cameras used for video).

Then there's "features while recording". Traditionally, most digital still cameras with video recording were not good camcorders, even given their limitations, because some features didn't work during recording. The first one I had with this mode, a Canon from the 90s, didn't even keep the viewscreen active. It's more common for autofocus, autoexposure, and/or zoom to not function while doing video. Some do it.. I have a Panasonic TZ5 which does keep everything active during video, and functions as a somewhat reasonable camcorder (with bad sound and too-high compression, but I have used it as a third video camera on shoots from time to time). So I looked it up, and while it's not easy to find, one review (included below) did find that auto-focus/exposure remain active during video, and you can zoom. In general, this camera is better designed for video than most.. for example, there's a separate video button which can be used in any photo mode -- most DSCs make you switch to a different "movie mode", which is a bit annoying (my Panny is like this).

So yeah, I would bet that the SX10 would deliver video comparable to the TRV250, if not quite on par with the FS100. And naturally, the stills will be dramatically better than using the FS100 as a still camera. You are limited to 4GB file sizes, which means you get about 40 minutes at top quality before you have to stop shooting, but you can start again right away if you have an 8GB memory card (my Panasonic is the same way... it's because they use the FAT32 file system on the SD card, which is limited to 4GB maximum). With some limitations, it's going to be decent for casual video use, much better at least than most digital still cameras.

What Would Be Good Camera For Time Lapses ?

So i am 15 dont really have much money, and i was looking to get into time lapses. I have bee looking at hd video camcorders (professional grade, no best buy stuff), but i see that most people use large cameras with the interchangable lenses. Loking to get something in the 200-700 dollar range

Time lapse photography consists of of taking hundreds/thousands of photos and combining them in a video editor.

So you need both a camera and video software.

There are not that many cameras that can do time-lapse, especially in the compact camera range. A few that do are the Nikon P310, P330, P7700.

As well, some video cameras can also do time lapse, such as some GoPro Hero and Sony Action Cam. However, these cameras may or may not be suitable to your needs as they often have lens/optic issues preventing them from doing anything but the main job they were designed for.

Also, a few mirrorless cameras have this function - Nikon 1 does for instance.

And some DSLRs also have time-lapse functions. However, this is usually the mid-range cameras as not many entry level DSLRs have this function.

However, there is a 3rd party product on the market called an Intervalometer, which is basically a timer for time lapse. This will allow virtually any DSLR having a wired remote (with the proper cable) to be controlled for time lapse.

Realize though that not all DSLRs have wired remote capability. Some only have wireless (IR) remote - especially entry level DSLRs. At this time, there are not commercially available wireless remote intervalometers (although some people have built their own).

For instance, for some strange reason, the Nikon D3000 has a wireless but not wired remote capability. The Nikon D3100/D3200 has a wired, but not wireless remote capability.

Once you get your camera, you basically set it up on a tripod and select the number of photos you want, and the duration between photos. The best duration depends on the effect you wan to achieve. For instance, if you are looking for active scenes; people walking, etc. The best rate will be 10sec or less. But for scenery; clouds, etc. a 30sec~1min rate is better.

Realize though that some cameras - those with built-in timers - have a restriction as to the minimum duration you can have. This is because if you take too many photos too quickly, you might overheat the camera, and it can shut down. While you do not have this restriction with a 3rd party intervalometer, you could still shut the camera down by overheating.

Further, interval shooting uses up a lot of battery. You may want to consider an AC powered solution for the camera if you want to take a lengthy time-lapse movie. Virtually all Nikon cameras that have an interval timer can be AC powered with the addition of an expensive adapter ($100 or so).

Finally, with time lapse, you don't have to use the most resolution on your camera. You can cut down the resolution a lot, as video will mask many defects anyway, so the resolution often can be turned down. Turning down the resolution not only reduces battery usage (smaller files to write), but it also results in more manageable file sizes when it comes to combining the photos.

And when you have your entire stack of photos, you must combine them. If you have Windows, you can use Windows Movie Maker, or if you have a MAC, iMovie will work (they are both included free with your OS). However, they are restricted to about 10 frames per second, and for time lapse, you will want closer to 20 frames per second, which might mean you will have to buy a better video editor. But WMM or iMovie will at least get you started.

Here is a sample of one of the first time lapses I did with a Nikon P7000 compact camera (with a built in time lapse function) and processed in Windows Movie Maker. You can see that it is a bit jerky, due to the maximum 10 frames per second Windows Movie Maker is capable of.

The "later that day" part of the video was when I had to change batteries. An AC powered adapter would have helped here.

What are good, moderately priced semi-professional camcorder?

I'm a Journalism major and I'm currently in production of a documentary about religion practiced in my hometown for my school.

As I'm currently in college, I have very little money to spend. One pf my goals is to be an indie film/documentary director. As such, I would love to purchase a good camcorder.

What is a good camcorder of semi-professional/professional quality that I can purchase for a moderate price (at least as moderate as a camera will allow).

P.S., as a little side question, would kick-starter be a good way to raise money? For the project as well as the equipment?

My definition of a "professional camcorder":

Lens filter diameter = 70mm or larger
Imaging chip is 3CCD (3CMOS is acceptable but not preferred) that is 1/3" or larger.
Audio inputs are XLR connectors. If the camcorder has a single 1/8" (3.5mm) sretro audio input, then it drops to "prosumer".

The Canon XHA1 meets all these requirements of "pro grade". The Sony HDR-FX1000 meets all the requirements for "prosumer" and an XLR (juicedLink or BeachTek) adapter can be used for XLR mics. The Sony HVR-Z5 and Panasonic AG-HVX200 round out the list of entry-level pro-grade cams that meet or exceed the stated requirements. I think the Panny is the only one that comes with a shotgun mic for camera mounting but all the others can mount a shotgun mic. Since I prefer Sennheiser or Audio Technica shotgun mics, it does not really matter.

The next step up has the Canon XF and XLH lines; Sony HVR-Z7, HDCAM/XDCAM lines and the JVC GY-HM series.

All are "digital" including those using miniDV tape. Remember, the "DV" in miniDV = digital video.

If your definition of "semi-professional/professional camcorder" is different, please let us know what that is so appropriate suggestions can be provided to you.

When you research these, you will find pricing from around $3,000 up to $60,000. "Moderate price" is relative. Remember that the camcorder is a small piece of a larger system. You will also need a good, sturdy tripod and other steadying devices, video lights, optional batteries from the manufacturer, cables, cases, mics (there is no single "best" mic), video editing application, possible computer upgrades to be able to edit the video you capture...

Kick starter? We don't know where you are. Perhaps there are small businesses in your area willing to pay few $ for video production for posting to the web or there is a local wedding/event videographer willing to take you on as an intern or parents willing to pay for video capture of their children's sports activities or stage performances.With little/no experience with video capture, selling video services, editing and delivering a final product to your customer, this could be an interesting learning experience for you.

What's a great beginner-friendly, yet professional, camcorder?

I have no knowledge of camcorders or directing, but I've recently taken a big interest in recording my own music videos/short films. I'm willing to pay good money, but I just want to make sure that I'm buying a camcorder that'll last me years. I'm looking for a camcorder that'll record in HD, I know that's a standard thing nowadays, but I want the picture to come out great. I'm not sure if it's editing that makes the quality of the recording look amazing, but that's what I'm hoping it'll look like when somethings recording. almost movie like.

Does anyone have any recommendations on which camcorder is best?

Hi Christopher:

Usually "professional camcorder" and "beginner-friendly" don't go together in the same sentence or camcorder model.

And without you stating a specific dollar amount or price range, we don't know if you can even afford what's known as a "prosumer" (consumer model with many "pro" features) camcorder. These are typically $1000-$3000 USD. Professional models start there and go way-past the $50,000 mark.

Music videos (and watchable "films") require good audio tracks. External mike inputs (also needed for music & vocals mixer inputs) are another key "pro-level" feature beginners forget about.

And yes, the editing (and choice of file format, codecs, and workflow) can make a big difference in the final "look" of a video. And your computer (brand & model, and the Windows or Mac O/S version) makes a big difference in the quality of HD video edits, and even whether you can edit HD at all. (Good quality HD takes a lot of computer "horsepower" and fast storage to edit properly.)

Figure out your budget, and post an "Additional Details" update to your Question, and I or another Yahooligan can make specific model recommendations in your price range.

get a IE1394 (firewire) pc card off ebay for $1-2. Then get a transfer cable with a 6 pin connector for your pc on one end and a 4 pin connector on the other for your camcorder. (again $1-2 plus shipping). If you really need it soon, head over to your nearest electronics store, but its going to cost about $40 compared to $10. Putting in a firewire card is the easiest way to get your digital footage onto your computer without any quality loss (i.e. through analog inputs). You can then use Windows Movie Maker 2 to edit the footage. (Free download if you dont already have it)

With a standard camcorder you could transfer the videos to DVD or VCR and watch them. Where can you transfer high definition videos and how do you watch them on TV after you have removed them from the camcorder?

It depends on the camcorder's recording media and whether you need to watch in high definition.

MiniDV tape: After capturing the video, connect to a computer using a firewire cable (just like a standard definition miniDV tape based camcorder). Import the video using a HDV-friendly video editor. The Windows XP version of MovieMaker cannot handle HDV; the Vista version can - iMovieHD has been dealing with HDV for several years). Edit. Render to a DVD with a DVD authoring tool - just like standard definition. The DVD authoring tool (like WinDVD, Nero or iDVD) will downsample the video from high definition to standard definition and burn the DVD for regular DVD players to play back. Or, if you have a BluRay player or PS3, you can export the high definition video project to a h.264 AVCHD file and burn that to a data DVD - for high definition playback... or, playback in the computer if you can connect the computer to a HDTV with a VGA cable (like my Panasonic plasma) or in some cases, HDMI or even component. Or, I can export the high definition video project back out to the miniDV HDV camcorder's tape - then connect the camcorder to the HDTV with component or HDMI cables. Or, I can export a compressed version and reduce from 1080i/1080p to 720p (h.264) and upload to vimeo.com or YouTube if the file size or length of the video meets their requirements... Or, if I have a "Direct to DVD" box, I can connect the DV port of the camcorder to the firewire/1394 port of the "Direct to DVD" box and burn a downsampled, unedited version. Or, I can connect the analog AV cable to the camcorder and a VCR (or a "Direct to DVD" recorder) and dub a tape (or burn a downsampled, unedited version).

The great thing about miniDV tape is if you don't re-use the tape, you have that digital "archive". Especially handy when you export the finished high definition project back out to the camcorder...

With a hard disc drive or flash memory, when you copy the video files from the camcorder to the computer, your very first step should be to copy those video files to something else - Data DVD or another hard drive - before you start editing the first set you copied over. This "extra step" is needed - as you point out, once the data is copied, the tendency is to delete the files on the camcorder to get ready for the next video capture project. But you really need to make a back up set - and most folks don't do that.

MiniDV tape continues to provide the most flexibility and best video quality and easiest video process flow (especially with the "built-in archive" step... and with the known vibration and high altitude problems hard disc drive camcorders have and the continued relatively high expense of flash memory (one 60 minute miniDV tape is about $3 and holds 63 minutes of 1080i, high definition video - which uses about 44 gig of computer hard drive space), I don't understand how people can think they are getting a better deal with "easier to use" from HDD or flash memory... it just isn't so. MiniDV tape is still king of the hill for video quality, least $/gig, long shelf life archive and process flexibility.

I'm a high school student interested in film. I want to make application videos for colleges and other short films on the side.

I'm planning on getting the Canon Vixia G30 but I want good audio quality as well. What's the best optiob? I have sort of a low budget; I am in high school, after all.
Well most of the budget is going to the camera. I have some experience with filmmaking and I'm definitely going to use the wide range of features the G30 has. The camera's microphone would obviously not be good enough...I'm looking for advice on any certain brands or models of (shotgun) mics that are good quality. Preferably less than $200. If possible, within $100?

My son's high school film club recently picked up some Rode mics, suggested by parents who are in the industry and donated the cash to purchase them and new cameras. You should be able to find one in your budget, probably close to $200. Google to look for reviews.

Film programs, even the top one, USC SCA Film & TV Production, don't care so much about the technical side of things in application films, they care more about story. USC Film & TV major is now a BFA, and they're really focused on story, I know the alums who were involved in the changes. (Great program, starts off in freshman year, not sophomore as in the past.) Many of the application films of admitted students that I've seen are quite simple, filmed on their mom's camcorder, etc, but they have great story. They are actually more what many applicants might think that CalArts would be looking for as far as style. Several from this past year didn't even have dialogue. There are plenty of kids in my area (LA) with access to professional equipment (parents VIPs in the industry), but their very professionally done films don't get them admitted if they don't have the story (they had the GPA and SAT scores). Too often fancy equipment replaces story. A too technically good film can be a turn off to admissions, it's like the filmmaker has their style already set, and college is about learning.

Top film programs are very competitive, USC SCA, UCLA (junior level transfer only), NYU Tisch have about a 4% admit rate to their film/tv production programs. They use their amazing film programs to bring in top students, so GPA and SAT are important. They can find plenty of top students with talent to fill the spaces, so a great portfolio without good GPA/SAT typically won't do it if you want to be admitted to a good film program.

Start researching what you need for various college film applications now, the additional materials - films, writing, etc. You may have to shoot several films. Like USC wanted a film with a maximum of 5 minutes in length, NYU has been 10 minutes, and Chapman Dodge has wanted a 2 minute film about you without you in it. You could use a 5 minute film for both USC and NYU, but many applicants tend to want to go almost to the maximum allowed time. Interestingly, quite a few of admitted applicants had shorter films, like 2 to 3 minutes at USC. (Do not go over the maximum length.) Since it's so competitive to be admitted, you may have to do a lot of additional material applications, so the summer prior to your senior year could be very busy. Often the deadline for film program applications is earlier than the regular deadline because the time it takes to look at all the films, so keep that in mind. And don't overlook the writing, as that can be even more important than the film. Google: USC (Chapman, NYU, etc) admission films to get an idea.

Best cheap screen recording software for Mac?

I need an app that allows me to record my Mac's screen in HD and I'd like it to be as cheap as possible.
While searching the Mac App Store, I've stumbled across Screenium and iScreenior Pro. Has anyone of you tried these apps? Are they good?
Please recommend any other free or cheap (under $30) screen recording apps. They must have HD capabilities.

A couple of years ago, Apple got tired of people asking this question, so they added screen recording to QuickTime Player in OS 10.6 and later. To record in HD, you must use an HD camera. Starting with Early 2011, iMacs and MacBook Pros have FaceTime HD camera. For any plastic MacBook, MacBook Air, or any older Mac, you need an external HD camera.

-- Connect your HD camcorder (if your Mac does not have a FaceTime HD camera).
-- Open QuickTime Player X.
-- Go to the top menu bar, File > New screen recording.
-- Click the drop arrow at the right end of the recording bar, and choose "Maximum" under "Quality".

HD camcorder for school?

I'm gonna be starting film school soon and I will be needing a new camera. I want to get a HD camera but I'm not sure which to get. I cant seem to find a camera with a handle on top for under $1500 and I was trying to stay under $800. Are there any out there?

If not I found the Sanyo WH1 which shoots 720p and is waterproof which is really cool but is it god enough?

Any suggestions?

Sony DCR-HC30 to Imovie help!?

Im trying to import video using a usb cable from my sony dcr-hc30 into my macbook but it wont read my camera...how do i make the settings compatible?

USB won't work to get video from that camcorder to any Mac - regardless of settings

You did not tell us which MacBook. MacBook Air laptops have no firewire port and no way to add one. If your MacBook was made between October 2008 and June 2009, it does not have a firewire port and there is no way to add one. Your best option is to get another Mac with a known working firewire port and an external hard drive, import the video over firewire and save the project files to the external drive, dismount the drive, power the drive down, disconnect the drive, connect it to the MacBook, power everything up, then edit the video.

Firewire, IEEE1394, DV and i.LINK are all basically the same thing - and they are not USB.

If your MacBook was made before October 2009 or after June 2009 or any other Mac made inthe last 10+ years, it will have a firewire port.

The DV port on a miniDV tape based camcorder is always 4-pin.

The firewire port on a MacBook (or any other Mac equipped with a firewire port) can be either 6-pin firewire 400 or 9-pin firewire 800.

To determine which firewire port your MacBook has - other than looking at it:
Under the Apple (top left of the monitor), select "About this Mac".
Click on "More Info..."
Under the "Hardware" dropdown, click once on "Firewire".
To the right, it will indicate either "Maximum Speed: Up to 400 MBPS" or "Maximum Speed: Up to 800 MBPS".

Yes, 4-pin to 6-pin (firewire 400) or 4-pin-to 9-pin (firewire 800) are readily available and both work well.

Apple, Frys, Adorama, bhphotovideo and lots of other brick/mortar and online stores carry them. If you choose a brick/mortar store, call them before you go to be sure they have it in stock.

Lets say I shoot a movie with my digital camcorder and upload it to my computer but the filesize is huge. How can I change things such as image quality, image size, and frame rate?

Free applications are the most desirable but I do have Flash8.

And I am not willing to go through it frame by frame.

Youll want to encode to h.264, It has some of the best compression.

Put the framerate at 23 minimum, 30 tops.

Lower the resolution to 400x??? or so.

"Handycam" is Sony's brandname for all their consumer-grade and "prosumer"camcorders. The SOny HDR-FX1000 captures low-compression DV and HDV format video to miniDV tape and captures JPEG still images to SDHC cards.

With a LARGE lens filter diameter (72mm) and LARGE 1/3" 3CMOS imaging chip array, it will do very well under low light conditions (any camcorder can do well under good lighting conditions).

With separate manual zoom and focus rings on the lens barrel, manual audio control on the OUTSIDE of the camcorder (not buried in a menu), LANC port, headphone jack and several other externally accessible controls, the biggest difference between it and a pro-series camcorder is that it has only a stereo 1/8" (3.5mm) audio input (just use a XLR adapter from BeachTek or juicedLink)... and it does not do HDCAM format...

Of course, to get the video from this camcorder's digital tape into your computer, this assumes your computer has a firewire port... and you can add the optional external flash memory recorder from Sony if you don't want to use digital tape.

If you mean to include other manufacturers other than Sony, please let us know that...
